CUHK Department of Music 香港中文大學音樂系 Founded in 1965, the Department of Music has been providing practical and academic training in both Chinese and Western music for over half a century.

It is Hong Kong's first degree-granting music department and awarded its first BA diplomas in 1969. Music Department boasts an international teaching team with a wide range of expertise, which has nurtured important musicians of Chinese and Western music for decades. Its library and archival collections are among the most important in Asia. It has its own symphony and wind orchestra, choir, and has many other types of music ensembles. All full-time faculty members of the Music Department hold doctoral degrees from well-respected universities. Most of the part-time instructors, who are largely responsible for instrumental lessons, hold either Master's or Doctoral degrees. Many of these musicians perform professionally in Hong Kong, and a number are members of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

The programme offers advanced academic and practical training in music and its broader cultural contexts, equipping students with the critical skills and insight needed to excel in their careers and endeavours. It is designed not only for individuals currently working in the music field, but also for music lovers with strong musical backgrounds from other professions.

We offer “The Master of Arts in Music Fellowship” and “The Master of Arts in Music Admission Scholarship” for outstanding applicants in recognition of their talents. Each Fellowship is valued at $100,000, while each Scholarship amounts to $30,000.

🎉 Celebrating 60 Years of CUHK Music! 🎶
In honor of the CUHK Music’s Diamond Jubilee, we gathered heartfelt stories from over 60 alumni from across generations and disciplines. Today, we will be hearing from Prof. Carmen Koon.✨

🗣️ What are the most significant insights, experiences, or growth you gained from your time at CUHK Music?
My piano teacher, Ms. Teresita Botelho, who taught me how to approach music and how to get the sound from the piano, inspired me tremendously on developing inner ears and music imagination.

🗣️ What are some of your fondest memories as a faculty member at CUHK Music?
I have many fond memories of collaborating with choir and orchestra committees to overcome venue limitations for large-scale performances. Notable projects include Brahms’ Requiem at the Chung Chi Chapel, Missa Solemnis at Tsuen Wan Town Hall, chamber version rearrangement of Xian Xin Hai’s Yellow River Cantata, Poulenc’s Gloria, and two opera productions in the Lee Hysan Hall. Additionally, we successfully recorded Beethoven’s overtures, Piano Concerto no. 4, Choral Fantasy, Arvo Pärt’s Credo, Stravinsky’s Petrushka, and Mahler Symphony no. 2 during COVID.

🗣️ Did you participate in any overseas exchange activities during your studies? If so, how did these experiences impact you?
I was awarded the “Semester at Sea” scholarship to study on board while visiting 12 different countries. During the voyage, I took courses in World Music and World Arts, an experience that immensely broadened my horizons.

🗣️ 中大音樂系是一個什麼樣的地方？
對我來說，中大音樂系給我的感覺很像一座「修道院」，帶著一種莊嚴而神聖的氣息。這裡一方面有非常優秀的老師，另一方面則有賴於中大優良的學術研究環境。加上圖書館和音樂庫收藏了很多珍貴的典籍和樂譜，環境安靜自然，讓人能很專心地在這裡聽音樂、研讀樂譜。這種感覺就像在修道院中鑽研古籍一樣，讓我們透過前人的經驗，不斷增進後輩的知識。

🗣️ 中大音樂系如何影響你的職業生涯？
在中大修讀音樂時，學術方面的訓練對我影響深遠。校內多元的課堂大大開闊了我的眼界，例如World Music Transcriptions 和 Form & Analysis，都有世界級的專家教授坐鎮，並配備國際水準的教材。此外，由創系教授紀大衛親自授課的配器法，水平亦是首屈一指。

當時我的主修是作曲，採取一對一的形式，師承陳永華教授。陳教授那時兼任香港作曲家及作詞家協會主席，這段經歷啟發了我對音樂行政的興趣。當時他擔任音樂系系主任，我觀察到他作為指揮，除了擁有強烈的音樂感和領導力，在處理音樂業務方面更是游刃有餘。無論是業界協會的公職，還是管理學術界的行政事務，他的處事方式都帶給我很多啟發。他不僅是一位傑出的音樂家，更是我想要效法學習的榜樣。

🗣️ 你在中大音樂系最重要或最有意義的經驗、體悟或成長是什麼？
我主修作曲，而對位法是作曲系非常重要的一門必修課。相比一般的和聲學，對位法的門檻稍微高一點，通常只有對此真的感興趣的同學才會選擇深究。

這門課是我在三年級最後一個學期修讀的。當時大家正忙於準備畢業，紛紛按個人興趣選擇進修課題；我記得那堂課最終只有我和另一位同學選修，教授正是中大赫赫有名的羅炳良教授。羅教授既是這方面的專家，也是一位令人敬仰的教育家與作曲家。

當時上課的氣氛既神聖又緊張，那種感覺就像是接受私人傳授，研習極高學術規格的知識。教授就坐在對面，專注地看著我們落筆寫對位法，那種「金睛火眼」的注視確實令我壓力不小——尤其是考試時，真的很擔心寫得不好會影響畢業。幸好在羅教授的循循善誘下，我最終順利過關。這種小班教學的緊密交流與嚴謹的人文關懷，至今仍令我印象深刻。

🗣️ 請分享一個你在音樂系表演、作曲、創作或學習的故事。
我本身有彈奏電子琴 (Electric Organ/Electone) 的背景。當時剛好有一位鋼琴老師，他也是 Electone 的專家，竟然將一部退役的旗艦級電子琴帶到了中大，就擺在許讓成樓 LG01 那間房。多虧了這位老師，讓我平時可以預約那間琴房練習。

最令我難忘的經歷，莫過於在那間房舉行的一場演奏會。我大膽嘗試了一場充滿「實驗性」的演出：我事先為這部旗艦琴編寫好程式，然後設置它與鋼琴隔空對位，由我一個人同時控制兩部樂器合奏。在那群同學面前表演時，心裡既緊張又興奮。現在回想起來，那種不顧一切的衝動，真的只有年輕時的勇氣才做得到。這場演出對我來說，是大學生涯中最深刻、最難忘的回憶。

🗣️ 畢業以來，你最引以為傲的作品或成就有哪些？
在我的音樂作品中，林奕匡的《草原》未必是最具代表性的製作，但絕對是最有意義的作品之一，因為它連結了我音樂生涯中兩個非常重要的階段。

首先，我邀請了小時候參加合唱團時的指揮，帶領他的童聲合唱團為這首歌錄製男女聲合唱部分。為了呈現最完美的聲音，我特別租用了母校中大的利希慎音樂廳進行錄音。我看中那裡優美且自然的殘響，讓這群小朋友的歌聲透出一種純真與大自然的感動。

同時，我也圓了自己一個夢。雖然我一直有彈奏電子管風琴，卻從未試過彈奏真正的管風琴；而利希慎音樂廳正擁有一部為音樂廳量身訂製的管風琴。我憑著以前的經驗重新苦練後，在那裡與專業管風琴家一同完成了錄音。這首歌集合了我兒時的音樂回憶與高等教育對我的啟迪——能夠將母校如此珍貴、獨有的設施，應用到我畢業後的音樂製作中，這份情結讓《草原》在我心中擁有不可替代的地位。

🗣️你覺得中大音樂系是一個什麼樣的地方？
中大音樂系給學生很大的自由度去探索與發展未來的專業方向。老師提供技術與資源，但同時鼓勵我們嘗試不同領域，從古典到流行、即興與跨界合作，讓我在寬鬆但有支持的環境裡找到真正想長期投身的道路。

🗣️中大音樂系如何影響你的職業生涯？
在中大的學習不僅讓我建立更紮實的音樂理論與技術訓練，也在日常學習中悄然形塑了我的創作風格。多年來古典音樂的影響被我內化，成為我創作裡的語彙與色彩，讓我的作品在流行與古典之間找到獨特位置。

🗣️就讀音樂系期間，最難忘的回憶是什麼？
最難忘的是畢業音樂會的自主創作與演出經驗。學生擁有很高的自主權，我把自己接觸並喜愛的不同唱法 ── 包括古典唱法、無伴奏合唱與流行唱法一併放上舞台。那場演出給了我實驗與整合多種風格的機會，成就感深刻。

🗣️畢業以來，你最引以為傲的作品或成就有哪些？
畢業後我投身樂壇，並創作了數首自己相當滿意的流行歌曲，這些作品把我在中大所學的古典語彙與流行元素結合，無論在創作還是聲音處理上都代表了我的風格成長。能夠以古典音樂的背景進入流行音樂的世界，並在演出與錄製中獲得正面回應，讓我很有成就感。

🗣️What kind of place is the CUHK Music Department to you?
It is a place that encourages students to forge their own paths. New ideas and initiatives are welcomed and supported by both faculty and peers. There is a culture of curiosity and collaboration that values experimentation. The supportive atmosphere nurtures independence and responsibility, equipping us with the skills and confidence to navigate the professional world.

🗣️How does your time at CUHK Music influence your career/current work?
As a choral musician, collaboration is central to my work. Many of my closest friends, mentors, and artistic collaborators are CUHK Music graduates. Grounded in shared musical upbringing and values, these relationships continue to shape my career.

🗣️What are the most significant insights, experiences, or growth you gained from your time in the CUHK Music Department?
I often recall the famous remark by our beloved Professor Victor Chan: ‘Freedom is best exhibited under constraints.’ Although I am not a composer, this idea has stayed with me and deeply influenced how I approach my work. Whether curating concert programmes or developing new projects, I have learned that creativity often flourishes within thoughtful boundaries.

🗣️What are some of your proudest works since graduation?
My proudest achievement is founding NOĒMA, currently the only professional chamber choir in Hong Kong, where every singer is remunerated for every performance. Although there is still much to accomplish, we are steadily effecting industry change. I am especially proud of our production, Garden of Repose, presented by the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

🗣️你覺得中大音樂系是一個什麼樣的地方？
她是一個陪伴蠢蠢欲動的音樂追求者的基地，師生互相鼓勵、欣賞、幫助、義不容辭，讓音樂可以在系裏面單純地生長。一個永遠令人動容的地方。

🗣️中大音樂系如何影響你的職業生涯？
在音樂系主修教育，對於教育學生、教學法，以至如何跟共事的人溝通都有深刻體會。在學期間得到支持開展「天水圍唱」計劃，直接支持未來「圍唱音樂」的發展。

🗣️⁠你在中大音樂系最重要或最有意義的經驗、體悟或成長是什麼？
最有意義的是見證並有幸身處在一個熱愛和尊重音樂和藝術的地方。鼓勵到自己亦要努力走出自己獨特的音樂路。

🗣️就讀音樂系期間，最難忘的回憶是什麼？
最難忘的是參與非洲鼓班和表演。那是一個對中西樂樂手都很新的體驗，用上很多音樂感、記憶力和身體節奏，最後在運動場上鼓勵自己音樂系朋友，非常難忘！

🗣️畢業以來，你最引以為傲的作品或成就有哪些？
最引以為傲的是在「圍唱音樂」延續到音樂系的理念，建立了一個無論在演奏演唱、幕後製作、還是統籌活動，都熱愛並尊重音樂的群體，讓喜愛的觀眾或共事者都能感受這份精神。

🗣️ What is your most unforgettable memory during your time at CUHK Music?
Hundreds of hours spent studying, practicing, rehearsing, learning, and finding 100 books and references (for the bibliography assignment of Prof. Olson’s class) in the library alongside my peers!

🗣️ How does your time at CUHK Music influence your career?
The professors at CUHK Music have achieved outstanding accomplishments across multiple areas of music. They are also dedicated and skilled educators who provide students with opportunities and connections for career development. I feel very fortunate that, after graduating, I have been able to teach here, promote various types of student musical activities, and offer music students opportunities for performances and internships.

🗣️ What are some of your fondest memories as a faculty member at CUHK Music?
There are too many fond memories as a faculty member: seeing students being “transformed” and becoming able to learn independently and think critically; watching (and hearing) students perform with great confidence; and having students share their dreams (and secrets) with me outside the classroom (haha)!

🗣️中大音樂系如何影響你的職業生涯？
在中文大學音樂系渡過的時光，我從一位懵懵懂懂的音樂學生，慢慢成長一個專業的鋼琴家。課程中不同音樂範疇的學科，更是擴大了我對音樂的概念和豐富了我的知識。

互動式及多元化的上課模式，例如是小組討論，音樂會，作品發表會等等，都不只是塑造我成為一個音樂家，但是也塑造了我作為一個人的價值。這些在音樂上全面的發展，對我日後在任教大學，開辦大師班等等活動上有很深刻的影響，我能夠在多個維度地很好的表達自己，以及向學生講解不同音樂範疇，如作曲、理論、演奏、知識如何互相呼應和連結。

在職業生涯中，能夠清楚地表達自己，和他人有共鳴及共情，和彈琴的技巧同為重要。在中大音樂的四年，和同儕及師長的互動，我得以積累這些經驗。

🗣️就讀中大音樂系期間，最難忘的回憶是什麼？
當年為了趕工同學的伴奏及自己練琴，練到半夜都不回宿舍，享受晚上那種無人干擾的寧靜時光。那種為了目標破釜沉舟和不顧一切，是我最懷念的。

🗣️在學期間表演過最難忘的曲目是什麼？
有很多，最難忘就是和學生管弦樂團合作聖桑第二鋼琴協奏曲，雖然只是短短的一個樂章，但是台上的這個8-10分鐘，和系裡的好友一起並肩作戰演奏，的確是很青春的回憶。

這個難忘的回憶直到今天像是冥冥中有呼應，因為自己學生也在六月中將和學生管弦樂團演奏舒的鋼琴協奏曲，這也是一種傳承。

🗣️畢業以來，你最引以為傲的作品或成就有哪些？
畢業之後我有幸加入香港演藝學院作為伴奏導師，以及有機會在廣東外語外貿大學擔任音樂系的講師兩年，亦有機會在一些大專院校和音樂節中教授大師班及開辦獨奏會，包括瑪希敦大學及新加坡藝術學院。在幾年前，短短兩個月之內在愛丁堡及英國演奏了拉赫曼尼諾夫第二和舒曼的鋼琴協奏曲。

🗣️你覺得中大音樂系是一個什麼樣的地方？
中大音樂系是一個大家庭，一個畢業之後仍然讓人惦記的地方。系內的氛圍鼓勵同學接觸不同範疇的知識，亦重視彼此之間的交流與分享。雖說「100個中大音樂人有100種生活」，但大家都樂於分享音樂與學術上的體會，彼此支持，共同成長。

🗣️你在中大音樂系最重要或最有意義的經驗、體悟或成長是什麼？
我最重要的成長來自上莊及住宿生活。我先後擔任音樂系系會幹事、崇基合唱團主席和 Aqua Voice 核心成員，這些經驗讓我深深體會到音樂是群體協作的成果。舉辦一場音樂會或活動牽涉龐大的台前幕後工作，在責任分擔、時間管理、抗壓能力各方面的磨練，對於我事業的日後發展甚有益處。舍堂生活則讓我與不同背景的同學朝夕相處，建立深厚情誼，學會包容與理解。

🗣️就讀音樂系期間，最難忘的回憶是什麼？
就讀音樂系期間，最難忘的回憶有三個。首先是第一次首演自己創作的作品，初次以作曲家身份接受掌聲，那份感動與成就感至今依然深刻，我對作曲的熱情也由此開始。其次是參與中大歌唱比賽並贏得冠軍，讓我確認了自己對舞台的熱愛。

最後是大四那年，疫情導致實體課及畢業禮取消。來不及好好道別，大學生涯便倉卒地劃上句號。於是我們幾位同屆聲樂主修的同學製作了一首無伴奏翻唱並拍攝 MV，記錄校園風景和自己青澀的模樣。每隔一段時間回看這段影片，總能讓我回味大學時光。

🗣️畢業以來，你最引以為傲的作品或成就有哪些？
畢業以來，我在表演、創作及製作三方面皆有發展。首先，在英國留學期間，我在曼徹斯特成立港人合唱團，將廣東話合唱音樂推廣至外地。其次，去年我參演音樂劇《大狀王》，於京滬港三地巡演，演出超過五十場。

最後，重返中大攻讀作曲博士之後，有幸代表音樂系主講超過十個講座，推廣粵語現代音樂創作，並發佈個人首套粵語聯篇歌曲《琴房之花》，憑該作品入圍《金帆音樂獎》五強。同時創立 CUHK Gospel Choir，將福音合唱的曲目及表演形式帶入校園，希望為粵語合唱注入新的動力。
