【UChicago Research】One of the hardest problems in oncology just got a new angle — and it started with yogurt bacteria.

UChicago researchers engineered Bifidobacterium longum, a common probiotic, to act as a targeted delivery system for immune therapy inside pancreatic tumors.

The study, published in Science Advances, is a testament to what cross-disciplinary science can achieve — and to the kind of fundamental research that continues to define UChicago's approach to medicine's toughest challenges.

【UChicago Research】A new computational framework developed by researchers at UChicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, the Department of Chemistry, and IBM brings together classical and quantum computing to advance our understanding of molecular electronic structures. The method addresses a longstanding challenge in computational chemistry by breaking complex molecular problems into smaller fragments, then applying quantum sampling techniques to solve them, enabling hybrid algorithms to tackle progressively larger systems.

"This work demonstrates that current quantum hardware can already be integrated with established quantum chemistry methods," said Prof. Laura Gagliardi, co-author of the research. The results hold promise for advancing research in catalysis, energy, and chemical discovery.

【UChicago program】This summer, 23 Yung Fellows from UChicago and HKU joined us in Hong Kong to dive into research spanning health, global finance, technology, public policy, language, and migration — all made possible through the generous support of Mr. Lincoln Yung (MBA '70).

Led by Professors Kimberly K. Hoang and Marco Garrido, fellows took part in weekly research seminars, faculty-led projects, and heard from inspiring guest speakers including Dr. John Wong (The University of Hong Kong), Ms. Jo Hayes (Habitat for Humanity), and DCG David Schlaefer (U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong and Macau). Between sessions, they discovered the city and the beyond.

An unforgettable summer with an exceptional group. Excited to see where they go next!

【UChicago Program】We recently concluded our inaugural University of Chicago Law School Executive Education program, 𝐺𝑙𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑙 𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦: 𝐸𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑇𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐸𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑡 𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑒.

Led by Professor Tony Casey, our distinguished faculty from Law School, including the Honorable Madam Justice Linda Chan (High Court of Hong Kong) and the Honorable Christopher Lopes (U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas), offered deep insights into recent jurisprudence from Hong Kong, the UK, and the United States. Mr. Jose Maurellet SC, Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association, also shared his practical experience on cross-border insolvency matters.

We were also delighted to have many HKBA members and international lawyers join this three-day program for engaging dialogue on cross-border restructuring.

【UChicago News】From a UChicago finals week idea to one of the world's most competitive startup accelerators. Rise Reforming, founded by three UChicago PME alumni, has been selected for the Summer 2026 cohort of Y Combinator. The startup is developing technology that converts waste biogas into lower-carbon chemicals, addressing both sustainability and supply chain challenges in the energy sector.

The company grew out of UChicago PME's Engineering Design Capstone course and the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation - proof that at UChicago, ideas born in the classroom can scale to a global stage.

【Summer Academy】Three weeks. Five programs. 138 high school students. One unforgettable summer.

The UChicago Summer Academy in Hong Kong 2026 wrapped on July 31 with final presentations that brought the same intellectual energy we saw from Day 1. Guided by 10 UChicago faculty and guest speakers, participants across the region dove into Data Science, Economics, Game Studies and Game Design, Legal Analysis and Reasoning, and Public Policy - questioning assumptions and thinking the Chicago way. Program completers are also eligible to apply to UChicago College via the Summer Session Early Notification (SSEN) pathway.

To our participants: you pushed boundaries, built friendships, and embodied the life of the mind. We couldn't be prouder!

2027 Summer Academy is calling. Follow us for updates!
