New Spanish Teacher Joins ENGL

We are thrilled to announce that Iratxe Rico Orue has joined the Department of English and Communication as our new Spanish Teacher. Iratxe comes to us via the Spanish government's MAEC (Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs) programme, which facilitates the teaching of Spanish at universities abroad. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Spanish Consulate in Hong Kong for their vital assistance in making this appointment possible.

Iratxe brings a diverse academic background to PolyU, holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Hispanic Philology from UPV/EHU, alongside two Master’s degrees—one in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language from the University of Salamanca, and another in Teacher Training for Secondary Education (specialising in Spanish, Latin, and Greek) from the University of Zaragoza. Her teaching philosophy is grounded in applied linguistics and language acquisition, with a passion for methodologies that make learning both effective and engaging.

She has taught Spanish to international students at the University of Salamanca, delivered Spanish and Literature classes from Kindergarten through Grade 12 in Suzhou, China, and instructed Secondary and Baccalaureate students in Spain’s Basque Country. She also collaborated with the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council to teach Spanish to immigrant and foreigner communities of all ages.

As Iratxe herself puts it: "My goal at PolyU is to provide students with a new lens through which to see the world in Spanish. I want them to analyze, enjoy, and experience the language so that it becomes a dynamic, living tool for communication."

We are confident that her expertise, global outlook, and innovative spirit will greatly enrich our students' learning journey. Welcome, Iratxe!

A warm welcome to our new cohort of and students! 🎓✨

On 27 and 29 August, our Department held its BA and MA Orientation Sessions to kick off the new academic year. Our Head of Department, Professor Eric Friginal, warmly welcomed incoming students on both occasions, setting an inspiring tone for their studies ahead.

The BA orientation was led by Programme Leader Dr Max Diaz, while the MA session was hosted by Programme Leader Prof. John Rogers. Both events featured engaging sharing sessions from senior students or recent graduates, who offered first-hand advice on student life, academic success, and career development to help our freshers hit the ground running.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and a very warm welcome to the ENGL family—we wish you all an enriching and memorable journey at PolyU! 🌟
Best wishes for a successful and rewarding 2026/27 Academic Year to all students, both new and returning! 🌻

【🎉Congratulations to Prof. Renia Lopez on being awarded funding by RGC Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship Scheme!✨】

We are pleased to share that our Prof. Renia Lopez, was awarded funding by the Research Grants Council’s (RGC) Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship Scheme (HSSPFS).

Prof. Lopez’s cutting-edge project, titled “The Impact of Video-Mediated Communication on Multimodal Disfluency and Interactional Management in Second Language English Speakers”, has received support of HK$602,600 for 12 months.

The project investigates how video-mediated interaction (VMI) affects the interactional competence of second-language (L2) speakers. Using a mixed-methods analysis that combines systematic multimodal annotation, statistical modelling, and multimodal conversation analysis, the study will test how the online medium reshapes the cognitive-interactional foundations of L2 communication.

Deeper insights from the research could inform the design of more effective and supportive communication systems, with potential applications across professional domains such as health communications, customer service and language education.

Join us in congratulating Prof. Lopez on this outstanding achievement! 🎊

【New Book by Dr Hyejeong Kim on Exploring Aviation English as a Global Lingua Franca】

We are pleased to announce the publication of "Aviation English as a Global Lingua Franca" by our Research Assistant Professor, Dr Hyejeong Kim, published by Cambridge University Press.

This new monograph explores aviation English as a global lingua franca through the lens of communities of practice, shedding light on how pilots’ and air traffic controllers’ ongoing learning through practice in the international context helps make their communication safe and efficient.

This book critically examines the limitations of current international aviation language proficiency requirements and analyses live radiotelephony discourse in abnormal situations. It also reveals key communication challenges in high-stakes aviation contexts.

Read this book to discover why linguistic and domain-specific accommodation are essential to intercultural communication—and why greater standardisation is needed in handling abnormal situations.
