World Physiotherapy We are proud to share that Prof. Marco Pang, Chair Professor and Head of PolyU’s Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, has been named one of the 75 noteworthy physiotherapists in celebration of World Physiotherapy’s 75th anniversary! 🎉

Prof. Pang’s remarkable contributions include designing and launching the first entry-level postgraduate physiotherapy programme (MPT) in Southeast Asia, and being ranked among the world’s top 1% most-cited scientists in rehabilitation by Stanford University since 2022. He also received the World Physiotherapy International Service Award for Research in 2023, and continues to serve as chair of the Asia Western Pacific region executive committee of World Physiotherapy.

Congratulations to the P.A.T.H.S. 【看不見的長者健康風險？理大首創篩查工具識別「社會衰弱」👴🔍 】

不少人以為長者感到孤獨只是心情不好或缺乏陪伴，但若長期處於社會孤立、缺乏支援與資源的狀態下，會直接增加身體衰退等生理風險，即醫學上所指的『社會衰弱』📉。

為及早察覺隱形風險，理大護理學院副學院主任（策略）及副教授 Jed MONTAYRE 教授帶領的研究團隊，研發全港首個「社會衰弱十項篩查工具」（SF-10）📋 。工具從基本資源、社會參與、社交連結、人際關係及自我管理五大範疇評估，協助前線人員快速識別高危長者，並配合世衛推廣的「社會處方」全人健康模式，透過非醫療服務促進身心健康。

此外，團隊亦證實以自然為本、結合社交的非藥物介入，能有效減輕認知障礙長者的躁動行為。理大正積極擴大驗證並攜手社區夥伴，推動成果轉化為日常應用，為香港構建更具預防性、可持續且以人為本的照護模式。🤝✨

【An Unseen Health Risk: PolyU Pioneers HK’s First Screening Tool to Detect "Social Frailty" in Older Adults 👴🔍】

Loneliness and social isolation in older people are often dismissed as just a lack of companionship. However, prolonged deficits in social support and resources can directly increase the risk of physical decline, known as “Social Frailty” 📉.

To identify these hidden risks early, a research team led by Prof. Jed MONTAYRE, Associate Head (Strategy) and Associate Professor of PolyU’s School of Nursing, has developed Hong Kong’s first Social Frailty 10-item Screening Tool (SF-10) 📋. By assessing five key domains: general resources, social participation, social connections, interpersonal relationships and self-management, the tool enables frontline staff to quickly identify at-risk seniors and connect them to WHO-advocated “Social Prescribing” models through non-medical community support.

Furthermore, the team's research confirms that socially engaged, nature-based non-pharmacological interventions significantly reduce agitation in older adults with dementia. PolyU is actively expanding validation and partnering with community stakeholders to translate these findings into everyday practice, building a more preventive, sustainable and person-centred care ecosystem for Hong Kong. 🤝✨
