Department of Chinese History and Culture, Faculty of Humanities, PolyU HK The Department of Chinese Culture was established in September 2008.

Its mission is to impart to students the knowledge about the culture of China to help them broaden their intellectual horizon, and reach an integrated understanding of the relationship between self and society, so that they can develop foundations for their future career, improve the quality of their life and become a responsible national and world citizen in this age of globalisation. The Department has many distinctive features. For example it has a broad curricular coverage, which includes Chinese Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, Chinese Religion and Chinese Art. These and other features enable the Department to better present the characteristics and the values of the culture of China, better explore the reasons of its enduring influence, and enrich the multicultural, multi-lingual environment in the Faculty of Humanities at PolyU. To fulfill its mission, in addition to offering General University Requirements subjects for all PolyU students, the Department offers programmes related to the culture of China: a top-up BA (Hon) in Bilingual Interdisciplinary Chinese Studies, a Minor in Chinese Culture for undergraduate students, a MA in Chinese Culture as well as a Research Postgraduate programme up to the PhD.

Abstract:

Chinese presence in the Philippines predated Spanish presence by centuries. However, what used to be just occasional arrivals of Chinese merchant ships to Philippine regions developed into a permanent phenomenon from the late 16th century. The Chinese who initially came to the Philippines to trade eventually settled, defying Spanish legal prohibitions and violent expulsions. Despite Spanish attempts to limit Chinese arrivals and presence in native communities outside the colonial capital Manila, the Chinese settled in different neighboring provinces. In the province of Pampanga, they settled and engaged in agriculture. Their marriage to local women gave rise to mestizo families- the mestizo de sangley. By the 19th century, Chinese mestizo families became a powerful economic class in the province. Their beginnings can be traced to early Chinese settlers who permanently lived in Pampanga and engaged in agriculture. Using the 1697 land legalization proceedings in the Philippines, this lecture will discuss the process by which Chinese merchants became embedded in Pampanga society through settlement, land ownership, and marriage.
