AI and Advertising – New Theoretical Frontiers

Since generative AI’s public release, its rapid adoption across advertising has sparked a surge in scholarly research. While AI enables hyper-personalized content creation at scale, AI-powered search, and agentic shopping, it raises critical questions and concerns. Consumers are increasingly engaging with AI-generated media experiences, blurring the line between the real and the artificial. AI also transforms how consumers search for and process product information, disrupting SEO/SEM strategies. These developments challenge foundational advertising concepts and advertising effect theory. Furthermore, ethical considerations around content ownership, misinformation, and societal impact further underscore the urgent need for thoughtful, responsible frameworks. This seminar examines various topics related to the rise of generative AI in advertising and its implications for advertising practice and scholarship. Through interactive discussion, the speaker will challenge traditional advertising concepts, address key societal risks, and outline a future research agenda to build new theoretical frontiers in the AI era.

🎊 [New publication alert] Prof. Shih-Chia Wu has recently published a new research article in 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯–𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 exploring the sequential process of message acceptance in issue-based communication on social media through influencer identity.

In an era dominated by AI virtual influencers, should public-issue communication rely on "real humans" or "virtual personas"? Through two rigorous experiments, Professor Wu’s team discovered that the key involves a multi-layered psychological judgment of perceived humanness, social closeness, and trust. Depending on whether a message requires "closeness" or "neutrality," the cognitive mechanisms activated within the audience are fundamentally different. By expanding influencer comparisons into public-issue communication, this study provides a brand-new strategic blueprint for digital-age communicators.

Professor Andy Tan, Associate Professor at University of University of Pennsylvania, visited the C-Centre on October 23 and delivered a talk. He introduced a community-engaged AI (CEAI) framework that shifts the focus beyond model accuracy and data-centric approaches to emphasize meaningful community participation. He presented 𝘖𝘶𝘳𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦, a generative AI platform developed by his team to support collaboration and health communication among community-based organizations. The initiative aims to amplify, rather than replace, organizations' shared knowledge, local expertise, and collective capacities. Guided by principles of trust, equity, accountability, transparency, and co-design, the framework integrates community engagement throughout the AI lifecycle. A pilot deployment at COLOURS examines technology acceptance, trust in AI, and team collaboration to inform future improvements.

Community-Engaged AI in Civic and Social Organizations: Meaningful and Democratic Communication Co-Creation for Health Equity and Social Good

Civic organizations provide vital community services but often lack professional communication resources. To bridge this gap, the Annenberg School partnered with COLOURS—a Philadelphia LGBTQ+/BIPOC community organization—from 2025 to 2026 to develop 𝘖𝘶𝘳𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦, an AI-supported workspace. Following a 2026 pilot that helped staff promote an event for HIV case managers, this talk introduces the Community-Engaged AI lifecycle. The speaker will explain how 𝘖𝘶𝘳𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦’s design amplifies rather than replaces local knowledge, using staff-created products, surveys, and field notes to discuss its future in advancing health equity.

Prof. Sung-un Yang, Professor at Boston University and current Editor-in-Chief of the 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, visited the C-Centre on October 15th and delivered a talk under the Communication Seminar Series. This seminar explored how artificial intelligence transformed communication work across technological, organizational, and professional dimensions. Drawing on three interconnected studies, it examined factors shaping communication professionals’ AI adoption, employee responses to AI-driven organizational change, and the implications of increasingly autonomous AI systems. Prof. Yang highlighted the roles of leadership, organizational readiness, and perceptions of AI, while addressing emerging challenges such as role ambiguity, professional authorship, job meaningfulness, and AI-related stress. Together, the studies traced the evolution from AI adoption to AI agency.
