From her IBBA days to recent part-time MBA journey, Sarah Lee's dedication to continuous growth at CUHK Business School is truly inspiring!✨

Working as an Deputy Manager at Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL), Sarah has successfully balanced her corporate career with academic excellence. She was recognised with the “Tang Kee-Chan Memorial Scholarship”— established by alumnus Steve Ng (MBA 1971) in honour of his late father-in-law, the legendary Hong Kong "King of Comedy", Mr Tang Kee-chan.

🌟To celebrate her achievement, a reunion was organised for Sarah and Steve, unveiling a delightful surprise: Steve worked at the same company half a century ago before relocating to Canada! He brought along treasured company memorabilia to present to Sarah, leading to an afternoon filled with shared laughs, career reflections, and insights into the evolving shipping and logistics sector within the Greater Bay Area and beyond.

A new study co-authored by Professor Prasanna Karhade, Associate Professor in the Department of Decisions, Operations and Technology at CUHK Business School highlights why companies struggle to widely deploy AI automation, revealing how top-down vs. bottom-up dynamics determine adoption.

📌 Employee-led AI initiatives drive responsiveness and innovation, but risk fragmentation without clear governance .
📌 Top-down control often results in underutilised and unrepeatable AI projects, especially those without employee input.
📌 The key lies in blending employee initiatives, within clear governance frameworks that promote responsible and scalable use.
📌 Centralised IT support is essential to provide foundational infrastructure guardrails, ensuring AI tools remain reliable across the entire enterprise.

As global markets become increasingly interconnected, how do Hong Kong’s unique strengths bolster the GBA’s continued development.

At the CUHK Business School Greater Bay Area (GBA) CEO Forum, Mr Vincent Chui, Head of Wealth Management, Asia Pacific, Morgan Stanley; Mr Martin Matsui, Former Chief Strategy Officer, Exchange Fund Investment Office, Hong Kong Monetary Authority; and Mr Yan Xuan, Senior Fellow, The Pacific Forum, examined the forces shaping Hong Kong's evolving role within the GBA.

The discussion explored how continued financial opening, RMB internationalisation and cross-border market connectivity are creating new opportunities for regional growth. Panellists also highlighted Hong Kong's institutional strengths—including financial stability, the common law system and investor confidence—as key advantages that reinforce its role as both an international financial centre and a strategic platform connecting China with global capital.

Foreign direct investment acts as a vital engine for local competitiveness, yet its positive impacts follow a bounded trajectory that can crowd out new local entrepreneurs. A new study from Professor Ma Xufei, Professor of the Department of Management at CUHK Business School, reveals that foreign capital presence follows an inverted U-shaped lifecycle rather than a linear growth path, impacting how local entrepreneurs scale operations.

📌 The threshold: Positive spillover benefits peak when foreign firms account for 48% of sales in a specific industry and province.

📌 Knowledge transfer: Below this threshold, local enterprises can capitalise on positive spillover to learn technologies and managerial expertise.

📌 Crowding-out effect: Surpassing this limit intensifies competition, drives up operational costs, and drains skilled talent.

📌 Ecosystem gravity: Strongly developed non-state economies driven by private sectors enhance learning but also allow foreign competitors to expand aggressively.

Advanced automation in human resource management uncovers a severe latent repercussion, driving intense negative employee reactions. New research by Professor Choi Sungwoo, Assistant Professor of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at CUHK Business School, indicates that relying on AI for high-stakes career decisions severely undermines corporate morale, particularly in firms that explicitly espouse human-centred values.

📌 AI deployment for promotions or pay rises triggers lower commitment, stronger turnover intentions, and retaliatory actions.

📌 Employees experience powerlessness and objectification due to a loss of empathy, transparency, and operational control.

📌 A unique cultural paradox exists where collaborative, family-like workplace cultures face the greatest resistance to AI, viewing automation as a cultural betrayal.

📌 A hybrid approach utilising AI only in an assistive capacity for voluminous tasks can preserve human-oriented growth.
