TKP Education Fund Visiting Scholar Exchange Program Highlight: Visit by Dr. Zou Qihong

Supported by the Tin Ka Ping Education Fund, the Department successfully hosted Dr. Zou Qihong, an Associate Professor from the Center for MRI Research at Peking University, for an academic exchange from August 10 to 14, 2026. The visit was hosted by our Associate Head, Dr. Tong Xiuhong.

During her visit, Dr. Zou delivered a research seminar titled "Cortical Hierarchy Underlying Homeostatic Sleep Pressure Alleviation", sharing her latest findings on neuroimaging and sleep homeostasis. She also engaged with staff and research postgraduate students through dedicated consultation sessions and visited the Tin Ka Ping Foundation.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Tin Ka Ping Education Fund for supporting this initiative, and to Dr. Zou for sharing her valuable insights with our academic community.

On July 29, 2026, Dr. Wong Ting Yat, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at EdUHK, was featured in Sing Tao Daily discussing the psychological risks of teenagers turning to Generative AI (GenAI) as personal confidants.

Dr. Wong warned that GenAI algorithms often exhibit "sycophancy"—outputting overly agreeable responses that merely echo what users want to hear. This validation loop can distort cognitive perceptions, weaken real-world social skills, and foster emotional dependence, leaving youth isolated from physical support systems during severe distress. Because these interactions occur privately, these hidden risks remain particularly difficult for parents and educators to detect.

The four awarded projects, all led by researchers from the Department of Psychology (PS) under the Faculty of Education and Human Development (FEHD), address pressing challenges in mental health and neurodevelopment across the lifespan, from autism and ADHD to adolescent depression and early psychosis, securing over HK$2.75 million from the Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF) under the Health Bureau of the HKSAR.

Awarded Principal Investigators:

• Dr Michael Yeung (Associate Professor) – "Hybrid Computerized Executive Function and Social Cognition Training for Autistic Children and Their Parents: A Two-Arm, Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial with Six-Month Follow-Up"

• Dr Clive Wong (Research Assistant Professor) – "Towards Precision Psychiatry: Building Transdiagnostic Prediction Model from Neurophysiological Pattern for ADHD Children"

• Dr Paul Chan (Assistant Professor) – "Examining the Effects of Mindfulness-Based Horticultural Therapy on Reducing Mental Distress and Increasing Psychological Well-Being of Adolescents with Depressive Symptoms: A Randomized Controlled Trial"

• Dr Wong Ting Yat (Assistant Professor) – "Psychosocial Factors Linked to Resilience to Stressors in First-Episode Psychosis: Towards a Resilience Calculator"

Under the HMRF, funding is awarded to high-impact, evidence-based projects that promote healthier lifestyles and improve public health. This achievement highlights our Department's growing impact in mental health research and its commitment to improving lives through innovation and evidence-based practice.

On 31 July 2026, the Department of Psychology brought together alumni, faculty, and colleagues for a memorable homecoming evening.

Event Overview:
• Mindfulness Session: A soothing workshop led by Miss Hau Yik-ting, Grace, focused on practicing presence and well-being.
• Interactive Engagement: Guests participated in a spirited interactive game highlighting EdUHK campus life and department history.
• Feature Sharing Session: Insights and reflections presented by Prof. Chan Ka Shing Kevin, Prof. Hou Wai Kai, Dr. Cheng Wing Yi Rebecca, Dr. Liu Huinan Nancy, and Mr. Fung Ho Tin Felix.

Strengthening Academic Ties in the Mainland! From June 8 to 10, 2026, a six-member delegation from EdUHK’s Department of Psychology—comprising Dr. Liman Man Wai LI (Acting Head), Dr. Ivan Kai Tak P**N (Associate Head - Research), Dr. Xiuhong TONG (Associate Head - International Affairs), Dr. Michael Kin Chung YEUNG, Dr. Nichol Man Lok WONG, and Dr. Ting Yat WONG—embarked on a productive visit to Soochow University in Suzhou and Fudan University in Shanghai to foster academic exchanges and explore collaborative research opportunities.

📍 First Stop – Soochow University (June 8, 2026): Warmly received by Professor Wenfeng FENG (Associate Dean) and the Department of Psychology at the School of Education, the visit kicked off with introductions to both departments' strategic directions by Prof. Feng and Dr. Liman Li. The EdUHK team showcased research in neuroscience, developmental psychology, and cognition, while Soochow colleagues shared insights on attentional blink, short-video usage, and digital health interventions. The day concluded with a productive roundtable exploring joint research, postgraduate co-supervision, and resource sharing.

📍 Second Stop – Fudan University (June 9, 2026): Moving on to Shanghai, the delegation met with Founding Head Professor Shijin SUN, Department Head Professor Bin-Bin CHEN, and faculty members. Alongside mutual departmental introductions, both teams engaged in a stimulating academic session focused on social psychology. The trip wrapped up with discussions on future partnerships, including joint research in social and developmental psychology, faculty/student exchanges, and co-organised conferences. These visits mark a major milestone in deepening EdUHK’s network and research landscape in Mainland China—thank you to both institutions for their warm hospitality!
