Dr. Angel Leung Was Featured in HK01 on Youth Social Media Use and Regulations

In this talk, Prof. Abdullah Almaatouq from MIT will challenge the traditional experimental paradigm in social and behavioral sciences, arguing that evaluating experiments individually often leads to inefficient integration of scientific knowledge. He will introduce an innovative approach that prioritizes generalizability from the outset—asking where claims hold before conducting experiments—to build a more cohesive framework across social science research.

Four PS Professors Named Among the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2026 by Stanford University

The Department of Psychology at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) is proud to announce that Professor Chan Che Hin Chetwyn, Professor Chan Ka Shing Kevin, Professor Remco Christiaan Johan Polman, and Dr Yeung Kin Chung Michael have been named among the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2026, a prestigious global ranking compiled by Stanford University. Their recognition contributes to EdUHK’s record achievement this year, with 73 scholars included on the list, the highest number in the University’s history.

The inclusion highlights the Department’s strong research performance and international impact across diverse areas of psychological science. The Stanford ranking, based on Scopus citation data and a range of standardized indicators, is widely regarded as a leading measure of research influence and scholarly excellence.

The Department extends its warmest congratulations to the four awardees and all EdUHK scholars recognized in this year’s ranking for their dedication to research excellence and academic leadership.

Congratulations to Dr. Li Man Wai Liman on Being Selected as Mentor under the Hong Kong Scholars Program 2026.

Jointly organized by the Society of Hong Kong Scholars and the China National Postdoctoral Council, the program connects top Mainland postdoctoral fellows with leading Hong Kong scholars to drive cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research.

Dr. Li specializes in mental health, decision-making, and social relations from a socio-ecological perspective. Her funded project, "Understanding Depressive Symptoms from a Social Network Perspective," reflects her cutting-edge research in psychological science.

As one of the five selected EdUHK mentors this year, Dr. Li’s work will continue to expand its global academic impact while driving regional innovation and sustainable development.

TKP Education Fund Visiting Scholar Exchange Program Highlight: Visit by Dr. Zou Qihong

Supported by the Tin Ka Ping Education Fund, the Department successfully hosted Dr. Zou Qihong, an Associate Professor from the Center for MRI Research at Peking University, for an academic exchange from August 10 to 14, 2026. The visit was hosted by our Associate Head, Dr. Tong Xiuhong.

During her visit, Dr. Zou delivered a research seminar titled "Cortical Hierarchy Underlying Homeostatic Sleep Pressure Alleviation", sharing her latest findings on neuroimaging and sleep homeostasis. She also engaged with staff and research postgraduate students through dedicated consultation sessions and visited the Tin Ka Ping Foundation.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Tin Ka Ping Education Fund for supporting this initiative, and to Dr. Zou for sharing her valuable insights with our academic community.

On July 29, 2026, Dr. Wong Ting Yat, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at EdUHK, was featured in Sing Tao Daily discussing the psychological risks of teenagers turning to Generative AI (GenAI) as personal confidants.

Dr. Wong warned that GenAI algorithms often exhibit "sycophancy"—outputting overly agreeable responses that merely echo what users want to hear. This validation loop can distort cognitive perceptions, weaken real-world social skills, and foster emotional dependence, leaving youth isolated from physical support systems during severe distress. Because these interactions occur privately, these hidden risks remain particularly difficult for parents and educators to detect.
