Between 18-22 May, our International Director Dr. Tamara Rátz participated in the International Staff Week at Breda University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands. It was an exceptionally well-organised week that combined professional development, knowledge exchange, and cultural experiences. The programme included inspiring presentations, interactive workshops, job shadowing opportunities, a campus tour, and sightseeing activities to discover the history and atmosphere of Breda.

The discussions covered a wide range of timely and relevant topics, including generations and communication, the role of AI in education, and even aspects of wine culture. Beyond the formal programme, the week created valuable opportunities to exchange ideas and best practices with colleagues from different countries and institutions.

A group of our international students visited Budapest's Jewish Quarter in an informative and entertaining themed walk with Kata Nádas, one of the best (if not the best :)) local guides specialised in the city's Jewish heritage. Besides seeing the area's important landmarks, the participants also had the opportunity to discuss many different aspects of Jewish culture, religion and everyday life.
Thank you very much, Kata, for the memorable experience!
The activity was supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.

We have successfully completed our experimental multinational course "Balkán - Tájak, történetek, ízek / The Balkans - Landscapes, stories, flavours". Each week, a different lecturer from KJU or our Balkan partners discussed a different aspect of the Balkans region, from history, geography and politics to gastronomy, film induced tourism and cultural heritage preservation. The guest lectures from Serbia, Slovenia and Albania have significantly contributed to our students' understanding and interpretation of the region's complex identity.

This quote from a participating student's feedback illustrates well the course's added value: "During the Balkans course, I learned a lot about this region – not only about its culture and way of life, but also about the specific, elusive atmosphere that I think is one of the most defining characteristics of the entire region. This region was not completely unknown to me before: I had visited various countries in the Balkans several times before, and even lived in some places for a short time. These experiences had already given me a basic impression, a kind of personal connection to the region, but during the course I really realized how much I had not yet seen beneath the surface. What was particularly interesting to me was that I finally got a kind of explanation or context for many phenomena that I had previously “only experienced”. I think this was one of the greatest values of the entire course: it not only provided new information, but also helped me organize my existing experiences. Thus, looking back, several previous situations took on a completely new meaning."

The course was supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.

With a small group of Kyrgyz and Georgian Erasmus students, we have painted "signposts" that show the distance between KJU's International Campus and our students' country or hometown. The paintings will join last year's creations on our wall as part of our internationalisation at home campaign (some participants are missing from this photo taken at the very end of the workshop).
The activity was supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.

Between 20 to 25 April 2026, Dr. Katalin Szalai from KJU's Tourism Department participated in Erasmus+ teaching mobility at our German partner university, Hochschule Harz in Wernigerode, and gave lectures on "Destination and Sustainability Management – Case Studies from Hungary" (BSc course) and "Balancing QVE, RQL & Ecological Sustainability (Hungarian Perspective)" (MSc course). In her lectures, Dr. Katalin Szalai placed a special focus on sustainable tourism development and the analysis of case studies from Hungary. Among other things, the effects of mass tourism at Lake Balaton, conflicts of use in sensitive natural areas such as Lake Tisza, and sustainable approaches in regions such as Hortobágy or Őrség were discussed. The focus was on both ecological challenges and innovative solutions. A special highlight was the interactive elements in the courses, where the students were able to develop their own ideas and discuss current problems together.

On 20 April 2026, a group of our international students visited Europa Experience Budapest where they participated in a very interesting role-play game. Stepping into the shoes of newly elected Members of the European Parliament, our students discussed, negotiated and voted on two directives: the Online Participation Directive and the Climate-friendly Food Directive. By offering a simplified version of the EU legislative procedure, the game aims to make it easy to understand Parliament’s role in the overall process and MEPs’ work and responsibilities as directly elected representatives of the people. It also gave players a first-hand experience of democracy and encouraged them to be engaged citizens.

Miklós Radnóti: I cannot know

I cannot know what this land means to other people.
For me, it is my birthplace, this little nation embraced
by flames, the world of my childhood rocking in the distance.
I grew out of her like a tender branch from a tree
and I hope one day my body will sink into her.
I am at home. And if a shrub happens to kneel down
beside my foot, I know both its name and its flower;
I know who walks on the road and where they are going,
and what it might mean when in the summer sunset
the house-walls shimmer and drip with crimson-agony.
For one who flies above, this land is merely a map,
and does not know where lived Vörösmarty Mihály,
what does this map hold for him? factories and wild barracks;
but for me crickets, oxen, steeples, peaceful homesteads;
he sees factories in his lenses and cultivated meadows,
while I see the worker too, who for his work trembles.
Forests, singing orchards, grapes and cemeteries,
among the graves an old woman who quietly weeps.
And what seem from above train tracks to destroy
is a conductor's house and he stands outside and signals;
many kids surround him, a red flag in his hand,
and in the courtyard a komondor rolls in the sand;
and there's the park, the footsteps of long-lost loves,
the kisses on my mouth both honey and cranberry.
And walking off to school on the edge of the road,
to avoid being called on, I stepped on a stone;
look, here's the stone, but from above, this cannot be seen,
there is no machine with which all this can be revealed.

For we are guilty too, as other peoples are,
knowing full-well when and how and why we've sinned so far,
but workers live here too, and poets, without sin
and tiny babies in whom intellect will flourish;
it shines in them and they guard it, hiding in dark cellars
until the finger of peace once again marks our nation,
and with fresh voices they will answer our muffled words.

Cover us with your big wings, vigil-keeping evening cloud.
