Institute for Advanced Study, CEU The Institute for Advanced Study at Central European University (IAS CEU) hosts researchers in a multidisciplinary environment.

Promoting the free and independent pursuit of scholarly research in the context of an interdisciplinary intellectual community is the main mission of CEU Institute for Advanced Study (CEU IAS). Located in Budapest, the vibrant cultural and academic hub of Central and Eastern Europe, CEU IAS brings together scholars from all over the world who work in the fields of the social sciences, humanities a

nd the law. High level scholarly work is achieved through a combination of sustained individually undertaken research and ongoing collaborations and conversations with other scholars. CEU IAS is committed to providing its fellows with the time, space and opportunity to do both and to choose their balance and form. Scholars apply for fellowships and are selected through a rigorous selection process which involves soliciting multiple evaluations from renown experts in each field. Once in residence, IAS fellows set their own research agenda and pursue their work according to their individual schedules and pace. The Institute makes every effort possible to support this process through taking care of the fellows’ practical and intellectual needs during their stay. Fellows work on their own, with weekly formal and informal meetings and seminars, which foster an interdisciplinary intellectual community in each cohort. The Institute helps fellows meet and collaborate with local researchers in their own fields and help identify existing research groups, workshops or public lectures which may be useful for their work. The Institute follows the intellectual tradition of Collegium Budapest, the first Institute for Advanced Study in Budapest. CEU IAS is affiliated with the Central European University thus scholars have access to the intellectual and technological resources of the university, as well as its faculty, research groups and graduate students. At the same time, CEU IAS is intellectually and structurally independent of the CEU.

We were delighted to co-host the COST workshop “The Child Patient and Medical Expertise in Times of War, Crisis, and Transformation” in Budapest. Organized by Annina Gagyiova from the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, and Friederike Kind-Kovács from the Hannah Arendt Institute at TU Dresden, the event brought together international scholars for engaging discussions on children, healthcare, and medical expertise across historical contexts. Many thanks to the participants for an inspiring day of exchange. We look forward to future collaborations! 🤗

This week IAS CEU had the pleasure of bringing together prominent scholars and public figures from Hungary and Slovakia for a timely and thought-provoking workshop titled "Slovakia and Hungary in 2026: Challenges and Opportunities."
Participants explored the dynamics of de-democratization and re-democratization over the past decade, and discussed how a more constructive cooperation between our countries could look beyond today’s illiberal partnership. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to such an open, honest, and inspiring exchange. The dialogue continues.

Last week the Institute for Advanced Study at Central European University hosted the workshop "Caravans on the New Silk Road: Chinese Soft Power and the Hungarian Mafia State," bringing together leading Hungarian experts and internationally renowned scholars to explore the dynamics of Chinese influence-building in Hungary under the Orbán government.

The event provided a platform to rethink political, economic, socio-cultural, and institutional dimensions within a broader transnational and comparative context. The workshop fostered candid discussion and meaningful dialogue across disciplines and perspectives. We thank all participants for their valuable contributions to this timely and important conversation.

Three Ways of Thinking AI Philosophically with Joseph Tanke (University of Hawaii)

This presentation aims to distinguish between three major philosophical orientations towards the emerging AI technology. While historically this terrain has been dominated by anglo-analytic philosophy, this project intends to foreground the Continental tradition, and, in particular, the conceptual resources forged by thinkers like Marx, Foucault, Negri, and Simondon.
