💡Laura Ivánka, a student at the British International School in Budapest, won a medal at the ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair), often referred to as the world science championship for high school students. ISEF is closely watched by major American universities, from MIT to Stanford.

Laura Ivánka prepared for the competition with the professional support of Josh Davidson, an assistant professor in the Department of Fluid Mechanics at BME.

🙌Congratulations to Laura and Josh!

“Don’t hesitate to take the initiative, whether you come to BME or another university: student research groups are supported everywhere,” – advised Gábor Hornyánszky, associate professor and chair of the University’s Talent Support and Career Guidance Council, to the students of the STEM Academy at the closing event of the talent development program.

BME first announced the program for the 2024–2025 academic year with a grant of 12.75 million forints from the National Talent Program, targeting 11th-grade high school students interested in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). The 20 students selected from 114 applicants received a monthly scholarship and mentoring support while working on a scientific project.

“We are proud of the academy students; it was a great pleasure to work with them,” said Szabolcs Berezvai, assistant professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the main organizer and coordinator of the STEM Academy, and vice-chair of the BME Talent Support and Career Guidance Council. He added that what they gained through the STEM Academy will certainly prove useful when they begin their university studies.

From plant protection to AI – our Mechanical Engineering BSc student, Sándor Balogh won the 1st prize, receiving €2,000.

A highlight of the foundation’s work is the annual CLAAS Stiftung Award Ceremony, where the first-place winner received a €2,000 prize, the second-place winner €1,500, and the third-place winner €1,000 each year. The 2026 ceremony, held in Harsewinkel on October 25-26, several participants from universities and research institutions across Europe. This year’s event was especially significant for Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) in Hungary, as Sándor Balogh, a student at BME, won the prestigious first prize with his thesis "Design of a Row Crop Cultivator." Sándor’s mentor was Dr. György Kerényi and was accompanied by Dr. Kornél Tamás in Germany at CLAAS, as they represented Hungary at this esteemed international forum. His selection by an international jury underscores the high level of research excellence at Hungarian universities and the importance of cross-border academic collaboration.

Congratulations to our student!
