University of Pécs, Hungary Founded in 1367, The University of Pécs is Hungary's oldest university. It has had a chequered history, but the modern university, was established in 1921.

In January 2000 the University merged with the Medical University and the College of Education to become one of Hungary's largest institutions of higher education, having the widest range of academic programmes and research projects. There are now 25,000 students and a teaching staff of 5,000. With its other non-teaching staff, the university is the largest employer in the city. The university has

a good library, the largest in Transdanubia with over 1.5 million documents. Apart from the central library most faculties and departments, including the Faculty of Music and Visual Arts, have their own specialised libraries. The library also boasts one of the largest on-line facilities in Hungary. The County Library in the city centre is also particularly useful for students studying music and the fine arts. The university has all the normal facilities associated with student life, enjoying a wide range of societies and sports facilities, whilst each university faculty has its own student office. The university has its own student club, which regularly organises concerts and other events.
