The National Education Day, leaves us thinking, what is the importance of literature?

Jordy Satria Widodo, an alumnus of SGPP Indonesia of Batch V says, "Navigating the vast seas of literature is akin to embarking on an epic journey, much like the Odyssey!

As a Literature and Cultural Studies lecturer, my greatest adventure lies in guiding the predominantly Z-Generation students through the rich types of literary works. Introducing them to the depths of poetry, prose, film, and music is akin to navigating uncharted waters.

Why do we use figurative language?
Why not simply state the facts?

These are the questions that often arise as students grapple with the nuances of literary styles.

Yet, they soon discover that within the realms of imagination lies a treasure trove of understanding and insight waiting to be unearthed. It's not just about reading; it's about decoding the layers of meaning and exploring the boundless landscapes of creativity.

At SGPP Indonesia, I gained a deeper understanding of the intersection of creativity and policy-making.

Here, I learned that imagination and innovation are not just the tools of storytellers but also the foundation of effective governance. In a world constantly in flux, embracing our capacity for empathy and imagination becomes paramount, shaping the policymakers of tomorrow.

… got my beans in a coffee cup next to my seat, catch the view and another good book to read... 🎵🎶🎵

A piece of Hanson's Penny and Me goes better with World Book Day and leaves us thinking: If one person reads one book, how many leaders can we create?

This is a story from our alumnus of Batch III, Donny Meirantika, whose leadership is inspired by world luminaries and the books he reads.

Donny serves as Sr. Client Director, APAC & Country Manager for Indonesia in TIMWETECH (TWT), a Portuguese Digital Enabler HQ-based company. Dony also promotes education, sport, and gastronomy by establishing Yayasan Milenial Madura, Indonesia Equestrian & Wening Archery Foundation, and Sabor Nusantara—the only Indonesian restaurant in Madrid, Spain. He also serves as Vice Secretary General or Wakil Sekjen P2N - Perkumpulan Profesional & Pengusaha Nahdlatul Ulama as part of his activism.

"There are a lot of great people's leadership and legacies that I read from their biographies, and I found it interesting to read a book while on my business trip. From the book, we can learn about many leadership aspects in each era and every civilization and nation's rise and fall patterns. And it inspires me to be a leader and create more future leaders for Indonesia Emas 2045.

Learning some case studies and gaining valuable insights from interaction and networking among peers and distinguished lecturers at SGPP Indonesia have led me to where I am today, and it fuels me to forward what I have learned to others."

What makes International Women's Day and Indonesian Kartini Day correlated?

Feminist scholars believe that women's struggle should not be divided by geography as it will fail us to understand the whole 'herstory'. Women's struggles should be seen as women's agency to establish sustainable lead(her)ship.

This post covers a story of women's leadership in the sustainable economy, as represented by our alumna, who plays a role as a female leader in a sector she is passionate about.

On March 5th, 2024, our alumna of Batch VI, Thilma Komaling, who serves as the Indonesia Tuna Consortium Strategic Lead, was invited to voice her journey in Blue Economy in Washington, DC. The event was hosted by Counterpart International.

In that event, Thilma had a chance to share her journey in Blue Economy, ranging from issues on air pollution to marine and fisheries and her insights on industries, from sustainable tuna to policy change. She highlighted the urgency of working to preserve nature, believing in our mission, understanding the economic benefits of sustainability, and creating our support system.

Here is Thilma's journey in the blue economy movement:

"It all began with pioneering Jakarta's Car Free Day in 2006, and now, it is replicated in nearly 400 areas across Indonesia. So, what drove me? The idea was simple: I was tempted to think about my future children breathing unhealthy air. Then, it led me to advocate for air quality laws, a pivotal moment in my career. And now, I focus on sustainable tuna fisheries, which are vital to Indonesia's economy and global conservation efforts.

Recently, we accelerated the launch of the Tuna Harvest Strategy, ensuring sustainability for fishers and our oceans.

Women do great things when equipped with knowledge, drive, and passion, contributing to economic growth and societal well-being. Let's continue making a difference, both economically and socially."

"Working in digital literacy, especially for women, youth, and children, I believe empowerment through education is the key to facing the challenges of the digital age."

Ida Ayu Prasasti, a School of Government and Public Policy alumna of Batch V, shares her idea about the importance of digital literacy based on her experience as a Program Director at ICT Watch Indonesia.

In Indonesia, what I see as the biggest challenge is the gap in access and understanding of technology, often felt by women and marginalized groups. We must ensure that all levels of society, especially women and children, have equal opportunities to learn and thrive in the digital world. It is all about providing access and equipping them with critical skills and an understanding of digital ethics so that they can be active participants. Guaranteeing their rights to feel safe and comfortable in the digital space, free from all forms of violence and crime, so that we are ready for the 'Indonesia Emas' by 2045. And I have to emphasize that digital talent is a critical factor.

At School of Government and Public Policy-Indonesia, I gained a deep understanding of how public policy plays a crucial role in realizing these ideals. Public policy is essential to respond to current challenges and prepare us for the future. For example, public policies designed to support the development of artificial intelligence (AI) with an inclusive and gender-sensitive approach can create wider opportunities, especially for Indonesian women, to actively participate in developing AI technologies. Policies designed with this diversity in mind are essential in encouraging women's participation and crucial in advancing our society, especially in digital technology. By doing so, we can ensure that technological progress is equitable, inclusive, and sustainable.

Do you know that your peers can influence your academic achievement?

A study by Yuan Zhou et al. shows that the peers of college students who receive scholarships are likelier to receive scholarships—the finding indicates the number of peers positively correlates with the likelihood of receiving a scholarship.

Selecting your peers is crucial as it affects your psychology, attitude, and behaviour. Having good friends in your inner circle can provide social and emotional support, reduce loneliness, and help you adapt to academic life.

Also, with good friends, you can see whether you are progressing by comparing and competing with them.

So, have you got good friends to support your academic growth?

Inclusive education, how far have we progressed?

Naushad Forbes, on Endgame #106, proposed four questions on inclusiveness:
1. How do we invest in people so that they have the capabilities to participate in the modern economy in a much more effective way?
2. How do we ensure that our institutions are such that they provide widespread access to people and don't keep privileges with the privileged?
3. How do we ensure that our institutions are accessible to everyone?
4. And how do we balance sorts of incentives and freedom with safety nets so that people feel secure enough?

Those questions align with our commitments as a school that emphasizes the international ramifications of policies, strengthens students' analytical skills, provides training in the complex art of policy implementation, helps students excel as leaders, and fosters diversity.

Also, with our partial scholarship, we help lessen elitized education so that more people can attend higher education.

Having 13 batches so far, our school has created over 160 Masters of Public Policy, who have become the extension of our mission for social inclusion by being leaders in societies where they are and contributing to societies in ways they are passionate about.

May this become a growing vertical going forward, and our school be a good practice of inclusive education that we are all working on together.

Starting the year 2024, a new publication by SGPP Indonesia’s student of Batch VIII, Tarikem Saryam, comes to us to echo a lesser-discussed issue in the academic field, TERORISM.

In the paper titled “The Role of Civil Society Organizations in the Formulation of Presidential Regulation Number 7/2021 on Eradicating Extremism and Terrorism in Indonesia (Case of the Wahid Foundation, the C-SAVE, and the Inklusif Foundation) published in the PCD Journal Universitas Gajah Mada, Tarikem highlights how the three models of CSOs—The Wahid Foundation, the C-SAVE, and the Inklusif Foundation—partake in eradicating the violent extremism and terrorism in Indonesia.

Using Arnstein’s ladder participation as a conceptual framework, Tarikem shows that the three CSOs have contributed to the impetus behind the promulgation of the referred policy.

Congratulations to Tarikem Saryam. We applaud the publication of your outstanding academic paper.
