Nationalism and Religion in Comparative Perspective: A New Typology of National-Religious Configurations

Does religion fuel nationalism, or hold it back? In this talk, Şener Aktürk examines how religion and nationalism have shaped each other in different societies, looking at religious exclusion, national identity, state policy, and the role of religion in nation-building.

From orientation day to day one!

Orientation may be over, but the journey is just beginning. Our FOSS Orientation Day was filled with introductions, conversations, and new connections: from getting to know our faculty members and hearing experiences from our alumni, to learning more about FOSS programs and initiatives such as the Muslim Politics Review (MPR), UIII COMPOSE, Summer Training on Qualitative and Quantitative Methods (STQ2M). Students also got to meet the members of ASSIST Association of Social Science Students - UIII as FOSS student organization.

Book Launch & Discussion of The Ocean Remembers

Nia Deliana, Ph.D., our lecturer in the MA in Political Science program, recently took part in a book launch and discussion for her book, The Ocean Remembers: Indians and the Tides of Empire.

The event brought together participants from different places, including Aceh, Medan, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore, for a conversation around the histories, connections, and legacies of the Indian Ocean world explored in the book.

The Ocean Remembers revisits the forgotten maritime history of the Indian Ocean and the “keling” people, who played an important role as traders connecting Asia and beyond long before European colonialism. The book also traces how their identity changed over time and challenges the idea that Southeast Asia was ever isolated.

We are proud to see Dr. Nia’s work continue to spark conversations across places and communities. Congratulations, Dr. Nia! 📚✨

Case studies remain an important tool in social science research, especially for researchers who want to understand a particular case in depth. But what exactly is a case study, when is it the right method to use, and can it help researchers establish causal inference rather than simply describe a phenomenon?

In this module, you will explore the fundamentals of case study research, understand when and why it is most useful, and learn how case studies can be used to develop stronger research and causal arguments.

This module is especially relevant for students, researchers, and social science practitioners who are working on in depth research, developing a thesis or research project, or looking to expand their methodological toolkit.

How do we know whether a relationship is truly causal or simply a correlation?

Join Causal Inference in Social Sciences on 2–3 September and learn how to reason about causality and make causal determinations using empirical data.

Starting from the counterfactual framework, this module explores a range of approaches, from experimental designs to observational methods. You’ll also learn how to assess research assumptions, interpret causal estimates, and apply causal inference techniques using real-world datasets.

No prior programming experience? No worries! The module includes hands-on sessions using R, a free and open-source language widely used for statistical analysis.
