International Students Shine at SISSCA 2026 in Sawahlunto

International students proudly took part in the Sawahlunto International Songket Silungkang Carnival (SISSCA) 2026, held on September 5, 2026, in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra.

Bringing together culture, creativity, and international friendship, the students enthusiastically joined the celebration by wearing the award-winning costumes from the previous year's competition. Their participation added a vibrant international touch to the carnival while showcasing the beauty and creativity of Indonesian cultural heritage.

Through their appearance at SISSCA 2026, the international students not only experienced one of West Sumatra's most exciting cultural events but also became part of the effort to promote the rich traditions of Sawahlunto and Silungkang songket to a wider international audience.

Their presence reflected the spirit of cultural exchange and global friendship, demonstrating how international students can actively engage with and appreciate Indonesia's diverse cultural heritage.

As part of the 357th Anniversary of Padang City, international students of Universitas Andalas had the opportunity to experience Padang through two remarkable celebrations of culture and gastronomy: Padang Bajamba on 7 August and Talks on Taste on 9 August 2026.

For our international students, these experiences went beyond the classroom. They were opportunities to discover Indonesia through its culture and cuisine, connect with the local community, and experience the diversity that makes Padang unique.

Padang Bajamba
Dressed in traditional attire representing their respective countries, our international students joined the traditional Minangkabau communal feast (Makan Bajamba). They also had the special opportunity to meet and take a memorable photo with Fadly Amran, Mayor of Padang.

Talks on Taste
At this gastronomic gathering, our international students joined as audience members and explored the richness of Minangkabau cuisine. They had the opportunity to taste Nasi Goreng Rendang, prepared by renowned Indonesian culinary figures Chef William Wongso, Chef Lord Adi, and Chef Uda Dian and their team.

The event was also attended by Teuku Riefky Harsya, Minister of Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, making the experience an inspiring encounter with Indonesia’s growing creative and gastronomic landscape.

Halalbihalal & Culinary Festival 2026

Universitas Andalas held its Halalbihalal gathering today, fostering togetherness and strengthening collaboration within the academic community following Eid al-Fitr.

The event was further enriched by the meaningful participation of international students, who contributed to the Culinary Festival by presenting traditional dishes from their home countries. Featured delicacies included Biryani from Pakistan, as well as Tom Yum and Thai Tea from Thailand, offering a vibrant showcase of cultural diversity.

This occasion reflects Universitas Andalas’ commitment to promoting intercultural understanding and global engagement within its academic environment.
