Since the date of 18 November 1955 there has been the forerunner of West Sumatra Muhammadiyah University in convening the inaugural lecture for the Faculty of Law and Philosophy (later to become High School Ushuluddin) in Padang Panjang. After that, the AMA also established, and subsequent stand Faculty of Sharia in 1966 in Padang, then the College of Law in London. Tarbiyah faculty
and the College of Teacher Training and Education (STKIP) in Padang Panjang, the Technical High School in New York City and the College of Agriculture in Payakumbuh. Finally, the University of Muhammadiyah of West Sumatra (UMSB) was inaugurated as a university college shaped by the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture, No. 0125/0/1985 dated March 13, 1985. In the Academic Year 1995/1996, the existence UMSB more complete with the establishment of the Faculty of Forestry at the Padang. Currently UMSB manage with either 3 Faculty of exact sciences (Faculty of Engineering, Agriculture and Forestry), 2 Faculty of Social Sciences (Faculty of Law and Economics), 1 Faculty of Teacher Training and Education and a Faculty of Islamic Religion. In the Academic Year 2002/2003 has also opened the Graduate School of Islamic Religion with a Concentration Sharia Islamic Education and the Graduate Program in Law and Legal Studies concentration. At its inception just 19 people, all workers are not fixed. Currently UMSB have an adequate number of lecturers and spread evenly throughout the faculty, including 121 people remain the foundation lecturers, 37 lecturers and 340 people remain Kopertis outstanding faculty and Professor of qualified undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees. In addition to the quality of power quality educational resources, today UMSB parent has a permanent campus in the Village Pasie Tangah Nan Tigo Koto Padang, equipped with a single mosque along with other educational facilities and infrastructure, such as basic laboratory, physics and mechanics, electronics, astronomy, computer laboratory, studio pictures, civilian labor, technology workshops, garden experiments, wood chemistry laboratory, and library representative, and the campus is in Padang Panjang, Bukittinggi and IV Koto Nan Payakumbuh, remains used as usual for the activities of education, research and community service. Fostering student activities conducted through internal oraganisasi oraganisasi-universities, which include Student Executive Board (BEM UMSB), BEM level of faculty, students Regiment Force (Satmenwa), Muslim Student Nature Lovers (MALIMPA) and Association of Students (HMJ). Also in UMSB student organizations also exist in the form of extra-university, but the intra-organization Muhammadiyah Muhammadiyah Students Association (IMM). Among the forms of activities that are managed in an integrated way to "hone" their skills and student leadership UMSB conduct student leadership training, student service camp, the expedition a number of mountain-climbing expedition in Sumatra and West Java, journalism education, sports and arts development, cooperatives students, race Muslim clothing and a variety of sports. To the student activists were also given the opportunity to participate in student activities events regional and national level, either by the Ministry of National education and organized by the Council for Higher Education Research and Development Centre of Muhammadiyah leaders and institutions and other relevant bodies. UMSB all students the opportunity to obtain scholarships that assessment is based on student activities and academic ability, for attending UMSB. Scholarships were sourced from the Supersemar Foundation and the Ministry of Education of Indonesia through a package of scholarships increased academic achievement (PPA) and others. Until the 2010/2011 academic year, students who have received scholarships UMSB Supersemar many as 411 people, 423 people received scholarships PPA, 268 people receive scholarships Student Aid Study, EEDP (Engineering Education Development Project) as many as 48 people, as well as other direct scholarships like BAZIZ PYK / 50 City, PDM, Muhammadiyah and other residents. From the results of development efforts and improvement of the various parties that have been made since UMSB under the leadership of the Rector of Drs. Gusman Gaus, followed by prof. Drs. Azmi, MA, Ph.D., Prof.. Dr. H. Chatlinas Said, Dr. Hermansyah Aziz, M.Sc., Dr.. Shofwan Elha Karim, MA, Dr. H. Ardinis Arbain, and is currently re-Dr. Drs. Shofwan Elha Karim, MA, almost the entire course of study at faculties have managed UMSB Accredited status. In the 2010/2011 academic year is more than 99% have qualified Permanent Lecturer Magistrer Graduate and Doctor.
