The English Debating Society of Universitas Negeri Manado (EDS UNIMA) is a student-run organization that aims to create a critical, expressive, dynamic, analytical, and high-quality debating society. UKM EDS UNIMA was founded by Sandra Refli Medawo (Faculty of Language and Arts, 2009) and Stefly Novel Assa (Faculty of Social Science, 2009) when they both returned from the National University Debating Championship (NUDC) event at Regional and National levels in 2011. They both had a similar perspective that there should be an organization to accommodate Unima students who were critical and analytical, to be able to discuss the local, national, and international issues, as well as to develop their ability to argue in English. Novel and Sandra finally named it EDS Unima to make it easily recognized as the name EDS is commonly used by other campuses in Indonesia to refer to a debate organization. Moreover, this decision made to consider a former debate club called EDS of Unima established by some outstanding students (Jovan Basir, Iswan Sual, Primi Siso, and Hervinawati Limbe). By making EDS Unima a University-level Student Activity Unit, this organization can provide an opportunity for students to excel through its activities and English debate competitions. Eventually, EDS Unima received a Decision Letter (SK) from the Rector of Unima on November 11, 2011 (EDS Unima's Anniversary), made this organization officially a UKM in UNIMA
