[Did You Know? The Coral Triangle 🪸]

The Coral Triangle—the “Amazon of the Seas” 🌊—is the world’s ecological heart. Home to 76% of coral species, it sustains 120M+ lives. But climate change, pollution, and illegal fishing threaten its survival.

Enter the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI-CFF), uniting ASEAN and Pacific nations in a pioneering model of environmental diplomacy. 🤝

Can ASEAN leverage this ecological centrality to lead a sustainable Blue Economy in the Indo-Pacific?

From Pitch to Impact: ASC UGM x Planet of Love

It all started at GOOD PITCH Indonesia 2024, where ASC UGM was selected as one of the changemakers. From there, a meaningful collaboration was born with Planet of Love, not only to screen the film but to expand its impact through a jointly developed module: Network of Love.

One year later, we’re proud to share that this partnership continues to grow — now supported by a Community Engagement Grant (PKM/ 2025) from FISIPOL UGM.

The next step? A pilot project in two elementary schools in Yogyakarta, where the Network of Love will be tested as an educational intervention to spark empathy, equity, and conversation around love, identity, and inclusion.

We believe stories can be more than stories — they can shift culture.

🌏✨ Commemorating the 58th ASEAN Day ✨🌏

The anniversary of ASEAN may have passed on 8 August, but the mission it represents lives on every single day. 💛

From the moment five nations signed the ASEAN Declaration in 1967 to today’s ten-member community, ASEAN has stood as a testament to what can be achieved when diversity becomes a source of strength. Our journey is one of resilience, cooperation, and shared purpose—proving that regional unity is both possible and powerful.

As we look toward the years ahead, let us carry this spirit forward—working together to ensure that every generation inherits an ASEAN that is more peaceful, more prosperous, and more connected than ever before.

“The Shift in Japan’s Economic Strategy with ASEAN: Why Domestic Matters”
By A. F. Abbas (International Relations Graduate, Universitas Hasanuddin)

⚡ From the chaos of the 1974 MALARI Incident in Jakarta to Thailand’s boycotts of Japanese goods, Southeast Asia once saw Tokyo’s economic rise not as friendship, but as a new kind of imperialism. Then came the Fukuda Doctrine, a promise of “heart-to-heart” ties. Nearly fifty years later, as China rises and Japan recalibrates, can that promise still hold? Or is it time for another doctrine?
