Special weekend - 9th and 10th May 2015
The month of May has always been special in the calendar of the Marist Brothers so it is with pleasure that we announce the details of a very special weekend that will raise awareness about an issue which has affected so many Irish communities, that will celebrate the memory of two local past pupils who experienced untimely deaths and which will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the College (which opened for the Marian Year of 1954/55)
From the Lawn into the Dawn – 4.30am. – Marian College - Saturday 9th May 2015
The weekend will begin at 4.30.am. on the morning of Saturday 9th May when the Student Council of the College together with our Home School Community Liaison teacher, Mr Robbie Cronin, will lead a walk from the College to raise awareness about depression and su***de among young people. The walk – From the Lawn into the Dawn – will lead up to Ballsbridge, along the Merrion Road, crossing the Railway at the Merrion gates and returning to the College at about 6.30.am.
Many of our 4th, 5th and 6th years, as well as a number of our staff, have already signed up to walk the walk. Students in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year will need to be accompanied by an adult if they wish to join. We now invite any staff, parents, grandparents, past pupils or members of the community in Dublin 4 to join us for this awareness-raising exercise.
This is not a fund-raising event and there will be no function at the College on our return since the Council and Mr Cronin want the event to remain simple and to get the message across that there are always people around you and there is always somewhere to go if any young person feels under stress.
The Behan-Lacey Cup – 1pm. – Irishtown Stadium – Saturday 9th May 2015
The second event for Saturday 9th May will take place at 1.00.pm. in Irishtown Stadium when an inaugural soccer game between the senior College team and a team of past pupils will take place. This event is to honour the memories of two past pupils, Paul Behan and Dylan Lacey, who were tragically taken from this life at a very young age. We hope to make this an annual event for the Behan-Lacey Cup and again staff, parents and past pupils will be most welcome to come along to Irishtown Stadium and support the teams in this game which has been organised by Mr Robbie Cronin.
60th Anniversary Mass – 2.30.pm. – Star of the Sea Church – Sunday 10th May 2015
The Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Reverend Diarmuid Martin, who is himself a past-pupil of the College, will celebrate mass in Star of the Sea Church (by kind permission of our Parish Priest, Fr John McDonagh) on Sunday 10th May at 2.30.pm. All current and past- pupils, all current and past staff, all Marists, all current and past parents and all members of the parish community will be most welcome to come to this mass which will celebrate 60 years of Marian College in Sandymount
Reception – 3.45.pm. – Marian College – Sunday 10th May 2015
Finally, everyone at the mass as well as any other parents, current and past pupils, current and past staff and members of the local community will be welcome to come to the College for a reception at which details of the construction of a new sportshall – which will be available both to the school, to local primary schools and to local sports clubs – will be announced. The Principal, Mr Paul Meany, will outline the plans for the first new building at the College for over 40 years. Construction is expected to begin at the end of this summer so that the new facility will be ready for the 2016/17 school year. As well as the reception, the school will be open to visitors so that past pupils will be able to revisit old school memories by looking at the many photographs which adorn the walls of the College corridors.
