Ireland has ambition. The question is: what will it take to deliver it?

On 1 October, IMI’s National Leadership Summit 2026 will bring together senior leaders from business, public and semi-state organisations to examine the decisions and leadership required to shape Ireland’s next decade.

We’re delighted to welcome former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar as one of this year’s speakers. He brings a unique perspective on national leadership, long-term decision-making and leading through economic, social and geopolitical change.

Women’s participation in Irish construction has almost tripled in a decade, rising from 6,400 in 2015 to 18,900 in 2025.

Yet women still represent just 9.8% of the sector.

The numbers are moving, but representation remains low. Increasing recruitment is only one part of the challenge. Retention, commercial exposure, sponsorship and clear routes into senior roles matter just as much.

A stronger pipeline means little if the path to leadership remains narrow.

The next step in a cybersecurity career isn’t always more technical training.

For Susan Butler, Cyber Security Advisor at Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg), it was about developing as a leader without losing the industry context that matters.

That’s what drew her to IMI’s Leading in Cybersecurity programme: the combination of cyber-specific modules, leadership development and learning alongside other professionals in the sector.

Susan left with practical leadership ideas to apply in her role and a new network of industry peers to learn from.

Ownership means little without authority.

When people are accountable but every decision still moves upwards, initiative disappears.

The organisations that outperform will be those that give people real decisions to own, and leaders who resist taking control back.

AI can help marketing teams produce more.

More content. More campaigns. More data. But more doesn’t automatically mean better.

The real opportunity is using AI to understand customers faster, remove repetitive work and make sharper marketing decisions.

The advantage won’t come from access to the tools. It’ll come from knowing where AI adds value and where human judgement still matters.

Change can force a business to rethink everything.

The best coaches don’t rush to fill the silence.

That was one of Cathy McAleer (she/her) biggest takeaways from IMI’s Professional Diploma in Executive Coaching.

After more than 20 years in HR, Cathy wanted an accredited programme that would support her development as a leader. She came away with new coaching skills, a greater ability to be present and a network of people she can continue to learn from.

The NFQ Level 9 diploma is designed for HR professionals, managers, organisational consultants and aspiring business coaches who want to develop their coaching capability through practice, feedback and reflection.

The rush to find a solution can limit the quality of the thinking behind it.

That was a key takeaway for Sharon Cronin, a graduate of IMI’s Professional Diploma in Strategy and Innovation: spending longer in the discovery phase rather than rushing towards a solution.

Working in Schneider Electric’s global marketing communications team, Sharon joined the programme to deepen her strategic thinking and bring fresh ideas into the business.

She came away with practical tools and frameworks she could apply immediately, alongside new perspectives from senior professionals across different industries.

The hardest problems rarely need more effort. They need a different frame.

When teams keep returning to the same answers, creative problem-solving helps challenge assumptions, surface new options and turn ideas into action.

A practical business skill for anyone working through complexity, change or problems without obvious solutions.

IMI’s Creative Problem Solving programme takes place on 13 August as part of Summer Session' 26: https://lnkd.in/djPyMxFj
