The Wrong Place - Michael Dignam
Opening Wednesday 4th December, 7-9PM
Open Thursday 5th December - Tuesday 10th December, 12-6PM

The Wrong Place is a new exhibition by artist in residence, Michael Dignam. As a recipient of the recent graduate residency award, Michael Dignam will show a body of work in The Joinery gallery space.

The solo show is the second exhibition held as part of The Joinery Graduate Residency 2013. Dignam’s practice uses rhythmic patterns and formal juxtapositions to create a unique social narrative. Using subtle and unfamiliar combinations of common material, Dignam often presents riddle-like work, allowing the viewer space to decipher it.

“Michael Dignam’s compelling performative video installation… features individuals exercising quirky personal, expressive skills in fairly brutalist urban, architectonic spaces.” Aidan Dunne, The Irish Times, June 2013

One Night Stands - Michael Harding
Friday 13th December
7PM Sharp, €5
Wine and tapas €5

One Night Stands is a short series of one-off performances at the Joinery by individual theatre-makers. Readings, performances or explorations of works in progress; the series will encourage each performer to experiment and develop their work in an intimate setting, followed by a discussion with the audience.

Michael Harding, the Irish Times Columnist, playwright and novelist, has written a memoir that has gone to the top of the bestsellers list. Staring at Lakes is a beautifully written book in which he talks with openness and honesty about his journey through life, leaving the priesthood, falling in love, being overwhelmed by depression and ultimately how he found a way out of the dark by accepting the fragility of love and the importance of now.

Six-Month Visual Art Programming Residency

The Joinery invites applicants for a six-month visual art programming residency. The residency will allow the successful applicant the opportunity to work with the Joinery team in programming the visual art space. Currently the Joinery is looking to explore new approaches to operating within the model of a not for profit independent art space. In accordance with this desire to re-interrogate the space and its public function, we are interested in work that has an emphasis on process/politic/public/community. Please note this is currently a part-time voluntary position.

Deadline for submissions is December 8th 2013.

Carols from the Old and New Worlds… and a new name for Christmas

We thought we couldn’t possibly start mentioning Christmas in November, but we do want to make sure you have the date in your diary for a most special and traditional series of Christmas concerts to put you fully in the spirit of the season.

We kick off our Christmas season with A Baroque Christmas with our friends from the Irish Baroque Orchestra in association with the National Concert Hall on Sunday 15 December at 8pm in the main auditorium of the National Concert Hall. Paul Hillier conducts both ensembles as we celebrate the festive season with an evening of seasonal baroque music, including Schütz’s The Christmas Story, one of the most charming and melodious Christmas works from the baroque period.

After a break in proceedings last Christmas, we return to our annual favourite of traditional carol concerts travelling north and south of the border with Carols from the Old and New Worlds. These concerts are built around the seven ancient chants for Advent - the O Antiphons - which are sung throughout the period leading up to Christmas. Clustered in small groups between these chants are a variety of carols and winter songs, rare and familiar. These are drawn from traditional and contemporary sources around Europe, including the German and Italian Alps, Finland, Ireland and England and arrangements by our own Artistic Director, Paul Hillier. Join us in St Thomas’ Church, Belfast on Monday 16 December at 8pm (in association with Moving on Music) finishing off in University Church, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin on Tuesday 17 December at 6.30pm.

Hot on the heels of the series’ official launch last week with a Christ Church concert by David Bremner, the next event in the Irish Canon concert series features mezzo-soprano Michelle O’Rourke. The programme has been selected by Michelle to represent the breadth of vocal writing in Irish music as well her own style and interests as a performer. With music by Linda Buckley, Judith Ring, Benedict Schlepper-Connolly and Garrett Sholdice, and no less than three premieres, from Andrew Hamilton, Amanda Feery and Anna Murray.

“Most striking perhaps was the performance of mezzo Michelle O’Rourke, intensely staring down the audience like the embodied figure of music herself, only there to disappear with the last note of her song.” (Liam Cagney, musicalcriticism.com)

Michelle O’Rourke is an Irish singer currently based in Dublin & Berlin. Her natural, direct sound and unaffected expressivity make for a performer of rare dynamism.

In recent years Michelle has found most inspiration in the work of living composers. She has been involved in the commission, premiere and touring of works by Linda Buckley, Garrett Sholdice, Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, Judith Ring and Andrew Hamilton, amongst others.

Michelle performs regularly with Ergodos musicians (I call to you released 2013). She has also performed as vocalist with the lauded Crash Ensemble, and as alto soloist with the RTE Concert Orchestra.

Recent projects have included a song cycle for voice and chamber ensemble, titled Here I am, commissioned from Linda Buckley with support from the Irish Arts Council and Recueillement, a chamber opera by Garrett Sholdice.
At the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2012, Michelle was one of five selected artists to perform a Huddersfield Short. Her performance of music for voice and tape was singled out as an ‘exquisite moment’ in the UK Independent. Her dynamic vocal performance in Hamilton’s demanding music for people who like art with Crash Ensemble at HCMF was also singled out in the Irish Times.

Michelle is currently the recipient of a Music Bursary award from the Irish Arts Council.

ANA-MARIJA MARKOVINA

CARL PHILIPP EMANUEL BACH

Dear Madams and Sirs,

The year 2014 will mark a special anniversary: The 300th birthday of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach!

It is a a highly unique project: Ana-Marija Markovina is the first pianist ever to have successfully recorded on CD the complete solo works for piano by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The box, including 25 CD‘s, will be released in February 2014 by the Hänssler Classic label. There is at the moment nothing equivalent in the classical music area.

It is our deeply felt desire to make the music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach available to a wider international audience. For this reason, we are particularly happy to have obtained sponsors for this important project so that we can make it available at unusually favorable conditions.

Ana-Marija prepared different Solo-Piano-Recitals with the focus on Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's piano works. e.g. The Wurttemberg Sonata No. 3, Wq 49.

If there is any interest to organize a masterclass, Ana-Marija would not take any extra fee, because she would love to pass on her understanding of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s music from the point of view of historical performance practice to other pianists. We would provide the necessary sheet music, if you like. Of course she is teaching also other repertoire.

Furthermore she is specialised in barely known piano concertos, but especially in Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's music she is an absolute expert. In her repertoire are most of his over 50 piano concertos (Wq. 1 – Wq. 47), e.g Piano Concerto in A minor. If you are interested in taking into account a piano concerto by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach with Ana-Marija as soloist we could provide the complete orchestra material.

What Ana-Marija says about CPE:

"Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach has been at the center of my artistic work for ten years now. The inspiration I draw from his music allows me to gain new understanding of ALL music. Whether it is Mozart or Beethoven, Schumann or Schubert, Chopin or Liszt, or even “Pictures at an Exhibition” – my ability to understand music has incredibly improved after having studied the works of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.”

What critics say about her interpretation of CPE’ music:

„Poised between baroque strictness and romantic sensitivity, this music is totally convincing in Markovina’s so expressive sounding disciplined hands. Thereby memories of Wanda Landowska or Rosalyn Turreck are more than reawakened.“ (Stereoplay)

„The tremendous profundity and musicality of the Croatian-born pianist is also captivating. Ana- Marija Markovina plays with her whole heart and mind, phrases cogently and beckons listeners to make a compelling discovery with her recording of the piano concerto.“ (Gießener Anzeiger)

„Her simultaneously speaking and singing touch in no way smoothes the frequent pauses and beginnings but unites them conclusively into a sensitive polyphony.“ (Wolfgang Fuhrmann, Berliner Zeitung)

„Throughout, Markovina relates this as highly personal music, adopting a rather free, even highly romantic sound in this music. She is a pianist and unabashedly so. The A-Minor Keyboard Con- certo, one of about 50 that the composer wrote throughout his lifetime, shows off the dramatic side of the composer well: the use of dynamics as expressive, the harmonic twists and turns of phrase, the virtuosic and sequential passagework. Overall she seems to have mastered the techniques necessary for this music and has hopefully brought more interest to this extremely important, and perhaps more importantly, great music.“ (Scot Noriega, Fanfare Magazine)

„Ana-Marija Markovinas reading of the ‘Württembergische Sonatas“ is addictive!“ (Klassik.com)

„Markovina surprised us with breathtaking passages and a totally individual interpretation. Brilliantly rapid runs and sudden changes of mood characterise the Württemberger Sonatas, demanding an acrobatic and reliable finger technique.“ (Schwäbische Zeitung)

If we have aroused your interest we would be delighted to hear from you.

Croatian-born Ana-Marija Markovina studied in Berlin, Vienna and Weimar, and now lives in Cologne. She gave concerts and masterclasses in more than 40 countries.
