There is a strong tradition of training at the National Botanic Gardens dating back to 1812, when records show that students were first taken on as apprentices. Over almost two centuries the course has evolved to suit the needs of the day. Teagasc, the Agriculture and Food Development Authority, provides courses leading to awards of Certificate in Horticulture at Levels 5 and 6. There are college training facilities both at the National Botanic Gardens and Teagasc Research Centre, Ashtown, Dublin 15. The college is also involved in the delivery of a Level 7 Bachelor Degree in Horticultural Science in association with Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT). By combining classwork with practical skills training, and external practical learning placements, students receive a balanced approach to the work of amenity horticulture while on the courses.

Thursday marked the final day for our Level 5 Certificate in Horticulture student group as they returned to college after their 8-week work placements for one final presentation.

It was wonderful to hear each student share their experiences, the skills they developed, and how they put their horticultural knowledge into practice in real working environments. The presentations reflected the dedication, growth, and passion shown throughout the year.

We are incredibly proud of all they have achieved and wish every student the very best in their future careers, further education, and all the opportunities that lie ahead. 🌱

Best of luck to you all and enjoy the summer!

A group of SETU Year 1 students , along with lecturer Darren White, visited Whyte Bros in Naul last week. A huge thank you to Ollie, Joe, and Mary for the time and knowledge they shared.

The students had the opportunity to see tractors hard at work on the hills of North Co. Dublin, planting potatoes. It was great to witness cultivation and planting in action.

Ollie and Joe also shared insights into how their family business has grown, as well as the steps they are taking to become more sustainable—particularly their work on the grain dryer and their move away from oil to miscanthus as a fuel source.

Many thanks again from everyone at the college.
