Congratulations to Emeritus Professor Ger Hurley, who recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of his graduation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and University of Galway Alumni Eve Sheridan and Tom Dillon, who also graduated on the same day.

Ger is pictured with his wife Kathleen, his son Fergus, and the families of Eve and Tom. A lovely reminder of the lifelong connections formed through education and the strong connections between University of Galway and MIT across generations.

The annual Alumni Awards and Gala Banquet is a flagship event in the University of Galway calendar, providing an important opportunity to celebrate, recognise, and honour exceptional alumni for their achievements and contributions in their chosen fields.

While the awards highlight a select group of distinguished graduates each year, the event also serves as a celebration of our entire alumni community and a recognition of the significant role the University plays in shaping society and contributing to the economy.

🎓 A Reunion Six Decades in the Making
The Class of ’65 back together again — sixty years on.

In December, we welcomed a brilliantly colourful group of graduates back to campus for the first-ever 60th Reunion. The Aula Maxima, full of memories from their student days, was soon alive with laughter, conversation and stories from six decades of life.

This remarkable group includes teachers, lecturers, doctors, historians, engineers, business and industry leaders — and even a President of Ireland. Some are well known, many worked quietly behind the scenes but all made a difference and all remained true to their alma mater.

From UCG, to NUI Galway, to today’s University of Galway, the name has changed but the heart of the institution — founded in 1845 — has not: growing people, growing communities. A lovely reminder that a university is not just where you studied — it stays with you for life.
