MSc Coastal and Marine Environments

MSc Coastal and Marine Environments The MSc programme has a strong field-based and applied focus, preparing students with an interdisciplinary approach to the coastal and marine environments.

Our MSc supports the professional trajectory of the next generation of scientists and leaders by building a clear pathway for students from undergraduate programmes through the one-year MSc and onto research PhDs and the professional ranks. The MSc is field-based, and transdisciplinary in approach. A particular strength of the programme is that we have students with very diverse backgrounds in Geo

graphy, Environment & Natural Science, Geosciences, Biology, Zoology, Land Use Planning, Archaeology, Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, EU Law and International Business, and Offshore and Ocean Engineering.

Wandering Wednesday 🌊🇮🇪

Still thinking about the field days that shaped this MSc experience — from Grattan Beach in Salthill to the cliffs of Donegal, learning directly from Ireland’s coastal environments alongside such an incredible group of people.

Some of the best parts of the MSc in Marine & Coastal Environments at University of Galway happened outside the classroom: rainy shoreline surveys, climbing across rock platforms, coastal geomorphology discussions in the Atlantic wind, and long bus rides with classmates who became friends along the way.

Missing the field trips, the chaos of waterproof gear, and the people already.

Really grateful to have had these moments later featured in the University of Galway MSc film such a special way to look back on this chapter 🌦️

Policy doesn’t stop at being written; it has to work in the real world. 🌍📚

Next week, the Institute for Lifecourse and Society’s Public Policy seminar series will explore one of the biggest questions in governance today: how do we actually implement effective policy in complex and rapidly changing times?

This seminar will bring together academics, public servants, and civil society voices to discuss:
• factors driving successful policy implementation
• challenges of translating policy into impact
• pathways toward evidence-based and publicly engaged governance

🗓 Tuesday, May 26, 2026
⏰ 10:00–16:00
📍 G018, ILAS Building, University of Galway

A fascinating opportunity for anyone interested in public policy, sustainability, governance, coastal resilience, social change, and implementation science.

You don’t often get to sit in a room where a Nobel Prize–winning coastal scientist is answering questions on the future of our coastlines. |
Robert Devon, Nobel Prize Winner, Coastal Scientist and Paleoclimatologist

But this is exactly what the Dunes Forum creates.

Real conversations. Real expertise. Real urgency.

From coastal erosion to climate timelines, moments like this remind me why bridging science, communication, and community matters more than ever.

Grateful to have captured and been part of it, more to come from the Maharee’s

A glimpse into the conversations shaping Ireland’s coastal future.

A standout moment from this year’s Sand & Dune Gathering was the powerful talk by Prof. Mary Bourke (Trinity College Dublin) highlighting the urgent need for communities to organise and adapt in the face of accelerating coastal change. From extreme climate events to real-world coastal hazards, her message was clear: adaptation is no longer optional and Nature-based Solutions must be at the forefront.

This reel captures just a fraction of the day, from funding pathways and governance discussions to on-the-ground insights at Béal Geal, where science meets lived experience.

What made this gathering so impactful was the diversity of voices, spanning universities, local authorities, national agencies, and grassroots conservation groups, all working toward protecting and restoring Ireland’s fragile dune systems.

Grateful to be part of a programme that connects us directly with the people, places, and decisions shaping our coasts in real time 🤍

Huge thank you to the organisers, speakers, and contributors who made the day what it was.

Last Call: Coastal Futures Workshop – Tonight!

After weeks of planning, designing, and pulling this together behind the scenes (and seeing it featured in the Kerryman 👀), today’s the day.

If you’re around and curious about:
• coastal change
• climate resilience
• community + environmental futures

👉 this is your sign to come along.

This workshop is part of my MSc in Marine & Coastal Environments at the University of Galway — and it’s been such a rewarding process bringing research into a real-world, local conversation.

Whether you’re a student, local, or just ocean-curious — you’re very welcome.

Let’s talk coasts, community, and change 🌍🌊

Last call 📣
Join us tonight for the Barrow & Fenit Coastal Workshop.

Coastal erosion, flooding, and storm impacts are already being felt across our shores — and local voices are essential in shaping what comes next.

This is a space to share experiences, raise concerns, and be part of the conversation around protecting and strengthening our coastlines.

🕖 7PM
📍 Fenit Community Hall

Your perspective matters — we hope to see you there.

MSc class heading up too, to facilitate the work 😀

A date for your diary!

You are invited by University of Galway to a community workshop on Wednesday 26th November, from 7.30 - 9pm in the Rosnakill Community Hub. The workshop will report on cross community meetings that researcher Arsenia Da Cruz has held in Fanad this summer, will explore nature-based solutions and help shape recommendations for future climate resilience in Fanad. Intrigued? Come and find out all about it!
