Hey guys,

It's been a while but Chess Soc is back having meetings in Smokey's from 8 tonight. Join us for some chess and chats.

25/09/2015

Hey, Is anyone free to head to socs training over the weekend? We need to get two more people to head to a training session or Chess Soc might be demoted to a provisional society so if you could spare a few hours could you give us a message to organise it. The training timetable is here (http://www.socs.nuigalway.ie/download/file/43114/Socs%20Training%202015%20(1).pdf ) if you want to take a look. Thanks.

Hey all.
New email is out. The main thing is GIANT CHESS on today from 2 outside the library in the college. The rest of the email is as follows

(Generic Salutations)*

Good morning to you all on this, the most memorable** of days. Did you know that on this day, in the year of our lord 1534, the Irish rebel Silken Thomas was executed by order of Henry VIII. Let us never forget the craic that that lad got up to. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_FitzGerald,_10th_Earl_of_Kildare)

In actual chess related stuff we have a vaguely exciting event planned for today***. We have organised to play GIANT CHESS**** from 2 o'clock outside the library. For anyone who doesn't know what this is, it's basically like normal chess except on a larger scale*****. As we have to collect the pieces from Áras na Mac Léinn if anyone was free a few minutes before 2 and wanted to help we'd appreciate it.

In other news we have received an email there recently from the Socs Box asking if we wanted to take part in the St. Patricks day parade. Although chess doesn't seem like the best choice for a parade and all we could totally enter and just sit down and play speed chess or something in front of the judges******. Think of how much it would extend the running time of the parade if we were involved.

In other, less defined plans we're thinking of playing luminous chess again in the next couple of weeks and as always we're looking for ideas for our chess hoodies/t-shirts/socks. If you have any good******* ideas feel free to tell us at the weekly meeting which is on, as always, Wednesday from 8 in Smokeys.

Just to finish off I'll leave you with this piece of free writing which is dedicated to the wonderful Cáit for use in any upcoming Italian assignments:

The man walked alone through the streets of Rome. His thoughts were sad and his steps were slow. It was coming up to lunch time and all around him shops were starting to lock up while happy employees called out to one another as they made their merry way towards the market for food. Alas he would not be one of them. It looked like he would have to accept defeat and return to his quest later.
His mind went back to his beloved home town of Milan********, and to the wonderful American shop that he knew of. How easy it would be for him to satisfy his cravings if he was back there. He cursed the job interview which had made him leave his old stomping grounds and brought him to this godforsaken city. Although it had gone well and he had been offered the position at the paper he knew that without success in today's quest there was no way he would be able to move here. Just as he was about to give up and return to his hotel, dismayed at the thought of yet another failure he spied it, there in the corner of his eye, the little american store. If anywhere had what he was after it would be there and he felt his hope rising as he hurried towards it. "Please let it be open" he prayed as he approached the door and it seemed that luck was finally with him as the well worn wood gave way under the pressure of his hand. Stepping into the colourful interior of the shop his eyes swept the shelves for the familiar blue packaging. Spotting his treasure tucked away in one corner he ripped open the bag and shovelled a few into his mouth. As he bit down on the delightful crunch of the Crispy M&Ms he found himself looking forward to his upcoming move here and the new directions that his life would be taking.

Here's a video explaining why you should come to Chess*********. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeDYx7Tkc7I)

Until 2, or Wednesday**********,

Your humble*********** secretary,

Caoimhín.

* Do you know that the first word is always the hardest to come up with
**Bet you can't remember what you were up to last year on the 3rd of February.
***That's right, in less then four hours.
****I tried to find a videos of giants playing chess but it doesn't seem to exist.
*****The secret is in the name really.
******Sounds like a guaranteed prize to me
*******Emphasis on the word good,
********I couldn't remember where he was supposed to be from so I kinda hope this is right.
*********Just replace the word carpet with Chess.
**********Or never for some of you.
***********Even writing this cracked me up slightly.

Hey all.
The new email is out so I'll stick a copy up here. Just a reminder, if you'd like to get an actual email then please send in your address and we'll add you to the mailing list.

Hello Chess people,

So after last weeks, admittedly terrible, attempt to introduce poetry to you lot** I have decided to go back to the old classic and just send out an email of random stuff that may or may not be related to chess.

First off I'd like to welcome all the new members that signed up at the last socs day. Turn out was atrocious but what can you expect with the weather being that terrible and all***. I'd like to apologise to all those eager beavers who were there on the dot of 11 ready to join chess and then had to wait around for a while for us to actually show up; although to be honest if that's the most biggest way we disappoint you this semester I'd consider that a victory****.

On to actually chess related stuff I guess. As you should know by now we meet up every Wednesday from 8 till 11 to play chess in Smokey's*****, what you may not know****** is that we will be playing GIANT CHESS******* next Tuesday outside the library. The time has yet to be decided but will probably be from 1ish/2ish onwards. More definite details will be giving in next Mondays email.

In completely non chess related news we received an email from Feminist Society asking for our support for a protest that they are organising next Friday from 9.45 at the Quad in order to bring attention to the ongoing cases of discrimination on grounds of gender against NUIG staff members. I'm almost completely sure that we were just included as part of an email blast, although the thought of Fem Soc asking us specifically amuses me no end. Although I assume most off you will be asleep or busy at that time******** I'll include the links that they sent me for you to peruse if you have a spare moment:

Back to the chess. Many interesting plans are being formulated at the moment in relation to what this society will do before the end of the year including, but not limited to; luminous chess, chess hoodies/t-shirts/ties/socks, another underwater chess, chess trip abroad*********, extreme chess of various kinds, chess lessons, organising a group to head to intervarsities, organising intervarsities**********, organising an internal competition, human/wizard chess***********, and so on and so forth. If any of these ideas interest you feel free to tell a member of the committee at the weekly meeting and your interest may make it slightly more likely to happen************.

I'm sure you'll all be disappointed by the brevity of this email but I'm starting to get sleepy and I think it's about time that I head to bed if I want to be awake in time for the meeting tonight, got to get those 8 hours don't you know. I'm almost completely certain that I've failed to mention something, probably something important so you should like our page here. It's where we post all the last minute updates that don't get put into our weekly email and our funny videos and jokes eg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49JtNpQWAQY.

Until tonight,

Caoimhín

*I should probably try to put more effort into the subject line of these emails.
**Last weeks email was in the form of a haiku
***Trying to give you an out here but I still think you're all a shower of lazy bastards
****Insert your own joke here
*****That's the café at the end of the concourse************* for all you non Arts/Science people.
******Probably because we haven't told anyone yet.
*******Messing with the size of words seems to be all the rage amongst society secretaries these days.
********And that the rest of you won't care.**************
*********The Aran islands totally counts right.
**********We're not considering this one very seriously though to be honest.
***********This one requires cooperation with another society though so not very likely.
************I wouldn't hold my breath to be honest though.
*************I assume all of you know where this is.
**************I'm kinda assuming that nobody actually reads these footnote yokes at the end here.

For anyone too lazy to transcribe last weeks email and couldn't find the translation*, we are doing underwater chess tonight in the Connacht hotel from half 7 till half 9. The current plan is for a group to meet in Eyre Square at around quarter to 7 and head out together.

For anyone who's confused as to what underwater chess is here is a picture from a year or two ago curtsey of Joe Hyland.

See you all there

*It wasn't difficult.
