The Ghosts of Rome by Professor Joseph O’Connor, Frank McCourt Chair of Creative Writing at University of Limerick, has been announced as the 2025 An Post Irish Book of the Year.

Speaking about his most recent accolade, Professor O'Connor said: “It's a special moment for UL Creative Writing because my friend and colleague, the great Donal Ryan, won this award last year, and our former MA in Creative Writing student, Gráinne O'Brien, was shortlisted for it this year."

Congratulating Professor O’Connor on his Irish Book of the Year Award, Dr Sandra Joyce, Dean of UL's Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, said: “This remarkable achievement is a testament to his exceptional talent, creativity and contribution to literature."

Our graduate researcher Eimear Ryan will read from her novel-in-progress, Arcadia, in Glenveagh National Park where she is writer-in-residence

Reading & talk with writer-in-residence Eimear Ryan

Writer Eimear Ryan will read from her novel-in-progress, Arcadia, based on the life and death of Glenveagh owner, Arthur Kingsley Porter this Sunday 23rd of February at 3:00 PM in Glenveagh National Park Visitor Centre. She will discuss the process of writing and researching the novel, what first drew her to the subject, and the various problems and contradictions she has encountered while writing about this elusive figure.

The Glenveagh residency is in association with the Glebe Gallery, the Regional Cultural Centre and funded by Creative Ireland.

Bio: Eimear Ryan is the author of a novel, Holding Her Breath (Penguin Sandycove, 2021), and a memoir, The Grass Ceiling (Penguin Sandycove, 2023). She is a co-founder and editor at Banshee Press. From Co. Tipperary, she now lives in Cork city, where she lectures in creative writing at University College Cork.
