Week 1 for our Teagasc Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture students finished today with a busy morning out on the farm. Students clipped the tails of over 60 cows in preparation for drying off. Other students dosed and weighed 70 dairy heifer calves. While more students weighed, dosed and vaccinated the mid-season lambing ewe flock. With close on 1000 head of stock our students will be involved in real livestock husbandry practicals between now and next spring.

A busy week for our level 6 students!

Our Advanced Dairy, Drystock and Mechanisation students attended the Generational Renewal farm walk in Nenagh Co. Tipperary on Wednesday. The visit gave students valuable real life insight into collaborative farming and new opportunities available to them. The visit was facilitated by Shane Ryan, Caitlin O’Shaughnessy and Aoidhe Sheill.

On Thursday, our Advanced Dairy students also attended a dairy milk quality and grass event in Firies Co. Kerry. The event was very informative on milk quality and grassland management. This visit was facilitated by college teachers Aoidhe Sheill and Seán Ryan.

These farm walks are a great opportunity to link classroom learning with on farm examples and learn directly from farmers and industry professionals.

Our Teagasc Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture students started at Salesian Agricultural College Pallaskenry on Monday. With students from 10 counties on the course we took the opportunity to attend a Milk Quality and Grassland Management Farm Walk. Students got the chance to get to know each other better and to take the teaching out of the classroom. They were accompanied by college teachers Conor O'Brien (Course Coordinator), Darragh O'Grady, Sean Ryan and John Flannery.
