We are a National University of Ireland, Galway fieldschool and the only archaeological fieldschool singularly focused on Ireland's prehistory. We have just completed a three year campaign of excavation concentrated on Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age megaliths - wedge tombs. This project is now in its post excavation phase and several publications are on the way. In 2018, we will commence a new campaign of excavation concentrating on barrows and the later Bronze/Iron Age.

Every now and then, an artefact spills the tea on multiple eras of the past. Take this gem, a chipped flint flake, unearthed from the ruins of a half-plundered building in the pre-Famine village of Scramoge.
Crafted from top-notch white flint around 6-7000 years ago, this small find has a history! Despite being buried in soil, its mint condition hints at a mysterious past - possibly moonlighting as a good luck charm.
Archaeologist Marion Dowd has dived into this intriguing history, shedding light on how these stone tools were once believed to be magical 'fairy darts,' used to cure sick animals.
