African Sustainable Communities

African Sustainable Communities We also draw upon Ben-Gurion University’s strong reputation in environmental studies, desert studies, global health and more.

"African Sustainable Communities" is a new and exciting master's degree program in African studies with critical development studies, located at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. The program brings together students from around the world and from a wide range of disciplines, and aims to create a community of diverse interests and vibrant dialogue around questions of community development

and sustainability in Africa.

We believe that community interventions in all areas should reflect knowledge of history, politics, sociology, economics, development studies and cultural studies. The program includes two semesters of studies at Ben-Gurion University in Beer Sheva, and a third semester implementing a project with a local community in Africa. The program includes two tracks - a thesis track and an applied track. Qualifying candidates can apply for a full or partial scholarships, and can also be provided with student dormitories.

Makuena Lesiea

A Master's student in Africa Studies (African Sustainable Communities) tells us about her research in Lesotho.

My thesis topic: Product Sustainability analysis of reed crafts in Maseru Lesotho.

“My name is Makuena and my research examines the social, environmental, and economic impacts of reed harvesting and craft making.

It looks at the economic viability of reed crafts, including reasonable wages for craftspeople.

More importantly, the study assesses the role of reed crafts in uplifting local communities, preserving cultural heritage, and providing livelihood opportunities for crafters".

Taremwa Fred

A master’s student in Africa Studies (African Sustainable Communities) from Rwanda tells us about his internship in Israel.

“My name is Fred, I am an intern at Arava Institute for Environmental Studies. I am working on a research project which focuses on assessing off-grid treated wastewater for irrigation using a case study of Al-Furaa School, located in an off-grid village in the Negev Desert, Israel.

The specific objectives of this study are to assess the impact of off-grid treated wastewater on crop growth and yield, evaluate the water quality and assess the level of bio-chemical contamination in crops irrigated with off-grid wastewater.

Therefore, this research seeks to improve sustainable agriculture through irrigation, prevent environmental pollution that comes with disposal of untreated wastewater in the environment and promote public health by preventing waterborne diseases that result from untreated sewage in water scarce and off-grid communities.
