What can the Negev teach the world about a more sustainable future? 🌍

At Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, that question brings together more than 190 researchers across fields ranging from agriculture and engineering to medicine and literature.

Our Goldman Sonnenfeldt School of Sustainability and Climate Change connects this expertise to tackle challenges in food production, water scarcity, and climate resilience. Its work reaches beyond campus, engaging young people in climate action and building international partnerships that bring dryland knowledge to communities around the world.

This is where our desert home becomes a source of global possibility—and where research, education, and collaboration come together to make a difference.

What happens when you put Einstein’s theory of gravity to the test in the quantum world? ✨

In an experiment carried out at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, an international research team used ultracold atoms to measure what happens when part of an atom’s quantum wave falls freely while another part stays in place. The result matched a prediction based on Einstein’s equivalence principle.

Led by BGU’s Prof. Ron Folman, the research gives physicists a new way to explore one of science’s biggest questions: how gravity and quantum physics fit together. It hasn’t solved that question—but it opens an exciting new path for investigating it.

What if cleaning up an oil spill could start in seconds—and continue with the help of nature? 🌊

Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev have developed a lightweight, plant-based sponge that can absorb roughly 100 times its own mass in oil. Once the oil is trapped, nutrients in the sponge support bacteria that break it down.

It’s an exciting example of BGU research bringing engineering and biology together to tackle a real environmental challenge. The technology is still in development, but its potential for cleaner waters is remarkable.

From memory to discovery 🧡
Ben-Gurion University has inaugurated a new XRF device in memory of Nadav Goldstein-Almog and his daughter Yam, who were murdered on October 7. The device will now serve researchers and students, carrying Nadav’s spirit of innovation forward.
