Dear Bethsaida family and friends,

Sad news,

I was informed that our dear friend Elizabeth McNamer passed away this morning.

Elizabeth was a long-time friend and co-director of the Bethsaida Excavation Project. Although coming from a small college at Billings Montana, she came to Bethsaida year after year with students and friends. Her enthusiasm to unearth Bethsaida was contagious. Elizabeth took part not only in the dig but in the Batchelder Conference and the Society of Biblical Literature every year.

There will be no excavations this year. Work is ongoing on the next volume of reports. Preliminary plans are in the works for a possible 2024 season, but many details still need to be arranged. Further information will be announced as things become certain, but do not expect to see any until the Fall of 2023 at the earliest.

Dear Bethsaida Friends:

I have some very sad news to report and I wanted to get to you quickly. I heard this afternoon that Richard Freund is in hospice care and has decided to decline all except palliative medical treatment from now on. He is currently hospitalized in Charlottesville, VA and has been for some time. He is apparently too weak to even withstand the two-hour ride home. Eliane, his wife, says that Richard has thought and written about Jewish end-of-life ethics for many years, so this is consistent with his beliefs and he and his loving family are all at peace with his decision.

Richard is not allowed to accept flowers and he is not eating. It would be very meaningful for his friends and colleagues to write to him to express our respect and love. Eliane will read those messages to him. I know Richard will love these messages. You, his friends, colleagues, and students, mean the world to him. Please spread the word. Eliane's email address is [email protected].

Hope to see many of you there!

Unfortunately the planned December 2021 dig season has been cancelled. The plan is now to switch it to May 16-30 2022. I hope you can make it.

Memorial Service for Margaret Darnell to be held at Warwick Uniting Church

08/10/2020

This evening, Australian time, Margaret Darnell, has gone to meet her Lord whom she served and loved so well. Our prayers go out to Ian and his family, and our love covers the miles to enfold them all.

To the Bethsaida Family, it is with regret that I must notify you all, on behalf of the family of one of our beloved BUMS, that Margaret Darnell is seriously ill, and has decided not to pursue life extending treatment. Margaret's cheerful smile, infectious laugh and can do attitude made her an important part of life on the dig and in the bone lab. Her spectacular tatting, and handling of Ian...try doing that in one day by yourself, made her such a special part of life in the Kibbutz and on site. Margaret welcomed newcomers, folded them into the slightly dysfunctional family that us BUMS are and became a part of our extended group of family and friends. Join with us in prayer and in sending good thoughts to her, Ian, and her children and their families. Ian explained it best in a message early this evening, and I enclose it here.

From Ian Darnell. It’s been a long week. It’s actually been a long few months. Margaret’s lymphoma went a little crazy in the last couple of weeks, thumbing it’s nose at the chemo and generally dragging her down. We nearly lost her during the week due to blood loss, which they managed to stop. Yesterday we had a family meeting with her doctors and she made the decision to stop chemo as she is no longer strong enough to see it through. Mum is at a private hospital in Toowoomba and has now been moved from ICU back into the ward for comfort care. She is too frail to travel home for the weeks the doctor suggests she might have. Mum is at peace with her decision, is organizing us all and eating huge amounts of ice (seriously, she wanted to leave ICU, but was concerned the ward wouldn’t have an ice machine. Just to set your mind at rest, it does, so she’s happy).

We love you Margaret and wrap you in our prayers and best thoughts and wishes, even though you are far away from us, we reach across time and distance to hold you in our arms. We love you Ian, and send you our prayers and thoughts for strength at this time.
