The Haifa Center for Mediterranean History - HCMH An academic research center for the study of Mediterranean History
Follow us on Twitter level and beyond.

The Haifa Center for Mediterranean History (HCMH) aims to turn the University of Haifa into a significant, internationally recognised hub for the study of the pre-modern Mediterranean. Its activities are varied, and they all focus on research, from the Ph.D. The HCMH works to enhance and re-focus scholarship in Haifa, securely setting it within the vibrant local and international networks of Mediterranean historical research. It recruits excellent new faculty members, thereby strengthening the field of Mediterranean studies in Haifa, as well as the discipline of History more generally. Special emphasis is placed on the eastern basin of the Mediterranean, as well as on cross-disciplinary collaboration in wider Mediterranean themes, such as marine sciences and ecology, in which the University of Haifa has already acquired a leading position. Opportunities and activities include tenure track positions, PhD and postdoctoral scholarships, international research groups, visiting positions, international conferences, seminars and workshops.

We are happy to welcome Dr. Lorenzo Mercuri, who joins the Haifa Center for Mediterranean History as a postdoctoral fellow!

Lorenzo received his PhD from Sapienza University of Rome in 2024, with a dissertation on the Templar headquarters in Paris. He has held visiting fellowships and research appointments in France, the UK, and Italy. His research focuses on architecture and urban topography in the 12th and 13th centuries, particularly the military religious orders and the connections between architecture, written sources, liturgy, and memory.

This year, Lorenzo will develop a project on the varied plans of Templar and Hospitaller houses, from rural preceptories and urban compounds in the West to central convents and castles in the Latin East, setting normative sources against the built record and tracing how Benedictine, Cistercian and Eastern precedents travelled across the Mediterranean.

Welcome, Lorenzo! Wishing you a wonderful and successful academic year!

Lorenzo’s publications can be consulted on his Academia profile (https://haifa.academia.edu/LorenzoMercuri) and ORCID record (https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2352-1987).

We are happy to welcome Dr. Noga Erez-Yodfat, who joins the Haifa Center for Mediterranean History as a postdoctoral fellow!

Noga is a historian of ancient Greek religion, with a particular interest in mystery cults, sensory experience, and ancient beliefs about death and the afterlife. Noga received her PhD from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, where she examined the sensory and cognitive dimensions of Bacchic-Orphic initiation.

At the HCMH, Noga will be working on the project, Routes to Hades: Maritime Space and the Spatial Imagination of Death in the Ancient World, which explores the relationship between maritime space and ancient conceptions of death, the underworld, and journeys to the realm of the dead.

Welcome, Noga! Wishing you and everyone at the HCMH a wonderful and successful academic year!
