Glocal is The Hebrew University of Jerusalem's unique program in International Development Studies, offering an MA and a PhD track (the only PhD track in International Development in Israel).
Each year, Glocal publishes its annual magazine: a semi-academic space where practitioners, researchers, and students write about the questions that matter most in the field, bridging the gap between theory and lived experience.

A few weeks ago, we shared the heartbreaking news of the passing of Fabian Bolugo, a beloved member of Glocal MA in International Development's family, devoted father, mentor, and change maker.
A crowdfunding initiative exists to support Fabian’s family during this difficult time.
Fabian dedicated his life to creating opportunities for others through education, mentorship, and community impact. His vision and commitment to empowerment were reflected in his work and in the article he contributed to the Glocal Annual Magazine, “Organic Agriculture as a Source of Economic and Educational Empowerment in Tanzania.” (available here: https://glocal.huji.ac.il/blog/organic-agriculture-source-economic-and-educational-empowerment-tanzania?ref_tid=12589).
Through his work with Kaima Tanzania and his support for young people and children in need, Fabian left a lasting impact on many lives.

Join Glocal’s new Environmental Sustainability track and gain the tools to address some of today’s most urgent environmental challenges. Designed for students committed to social impact, this track focuses on supporting disadvantaged communities facing the effects of climate change, environmental degradation, and resource scarcity.

Engage with critical issues such as climate change adaptation, water and land management, and the growing challenges of food security in the developing world. Develop practical skills and gain hands-on experience through internships with organizations working on sustainable environmental management and community resilience.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend, Fabian Bolugo.

Fabian was a beloved husband to Ashankira and a devoted father to his children. To us, he was more than an alumnus; he was a cherished member of our Glocal family.

Fabian was a man of vision and compassion. He dreamed of a better world and actively worked to build it, creating a home not only for his own children, but also for adopted children in need of shelter, love, and belonging. He was also the founder of Kaima Tanzania, a farm in Mwanza dedicated to empowering youth and creating opportunities for the next generation. In this role, he generously mentored a Glocal student during an internship, sharing his knowledge, guidance, and passion.

His legacy is one of generosity, courage, and hope.

Rest in peace, Fabian. You will be deeply missed.

The Glocal Program is pleased to invite students and faculty in the Faculty of Social Sciences to a guest lecture as part of the Doran Annual Lecture Series, by Prof. Serge Savary, Editor-in-Chief of the journal Food Security, on the social basis of the principle of food security, and the development of research in the field.
