The Hebrew University of Jerusalem mourns the passing of Prof. Ada Yonath, Nobel laureate in Chemistry and esteemed alumna.

Born in Jerusalem, Prof. Yonath began her distinguished academic journey at the Hebrew University, earning her bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1962 and her master’s degree in biochemistry in 1964 before continuing on to her doctoral studies at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

As the first Israeli woman to win a Nobel Prize, Prof. Yonath’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of students and researchers around the world to ask bold questions and pursue discovery without compromise.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, her colleagues, and the scientific community.

May her memory be a blessing.

Hi, I’m Noa Strum. I’m originally from Melbourne, Australia, and made Aliyah in 2021. After completing two years of national service, I began my studies at Hebrew University through the Mechina program at the Rothberg International School at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Although studying in English would have been easier, I wanted to fully integrate into Israeli academic life and society. After the Mechina, I enrolled in a double major in International Relations and Communications and Journalism, taught in Hebrew; this combination allows me to explore two areas I am particularly interested in.

What I love about my degree is how naturally the two disciplines interact. International Relations provides the political, historical, and theoretical frameworks for understanding global affairs, while Communications examines how events are framed and understood by the public. It is a privilege to learn from lecturers and TAs who are at the forefront of their fields, whose research and ideas are actively contributing to society, and whose passion for the field is keenly felt and shared by the students.

Studying at HUJI has also given me opportunities to take what I learn beyond the classroom. Through student opportunities in communications and marketing I have been able to apply skills from my degree in real-world settings.

One of the things I have enjoyed most about HUJI is the people I have met here. I have made amazing friends from different backgrounds, and the diversity on campus means I am constantly exposed to new perspectives, both inside and outside the classroom. Combined with the opportunity to learn from leading scholars in their fields, I really feel like I am learning and growing at a world-class university that is internationally esteemed. It is something I feel incredibly proud to be part of.

My advice is to future students is to take opportunities that challenge you, even when an easier option exists. Studying an entire degree in Hebrew was intimidating at first, but it became one of the most valuable decisions I made. HUJI offers so much beyond simply earning a degree, so search for and take the opportunities that allow you to put your learning into practise!

A new study examining Assuta Ashdod Hospital’s response during the October 7 attacks provides vital insights into how civilian facilities operate under sustained rocket fire. The findings offer practical lessons for healthcare systems worldwide as governments reevaluate medical preparedness for modern, high-intensity warfare.

The research was led by Maximilian Nerlander (Linköping University and visiting scholar at HUJI's School of Public Health), alongside Prof. Adam Rose (HUJI School of Public Health) and Dr. Debra West (Assuta Ashdod Medical Center).

What if an AI could predict how people would answer a personality test before they even took it?

Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found that ChatGPT can generate personality questionnaires from a variety of source texts and predict population-level response patterns with surprising accuracy.

The findings suggest that large language models have learned meaningful patterns about human personality from the language in their training data, without being specifically trained in personality psychology.

The study was led by Dr. Rotem Monsa, Prof. Aviv Zohar, and Prof. Shahar Arzy of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

When a city holds over 3,000 years of history, breaking into the global top 10 for culture and history feels almost natural.

According to the new Yanolja Attractiveness Index, developed in collaboration with researchers from Purdue University and Kyung Hee University, Jerusalem placed in the top 50 overall tourism cities worldwide, while ranking 10th in the Culture and History category. The index analyzed global social big data across 14 languages to evaluate how travelers experience and discuss iconic destinations.
