The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has awarded Honorary Doctorates to ten distinguished individuals, among them three Nobel Laureates in Economics: Prof. Joel Mokyr (2025 Laureate and HUJI alumnus), Prof. Joshua Angrist (2021 Laureate and HUJI alumnus), and Prof. Alvin Roth (2012 Laureate).

The University also recognized exceptional scientific and scholarly achievements by conferring degrees upon Turing Award Laureate, Prof. Shafi Goldwasser, and distinguished scholar of Islamic intellectual history, Prof. Sabine Schmidtke.

In recognition of their profound impact on higher education, healthcare, and public life, degrees were also awarded to visionary philanthropic and business leaders: Steven H. Lavin, Chairman of OSI Group; Danna Azrieli, Dr. Naomi Azrieli, and Dr. Sharon Azrieli of the Azrieli Foundation; and Marc O. Mayer, recognized for his longstanding civic leadership.

This month, we're proud to feature Nataliya Minskii, a Hebrew University alumna and entrepreneur using technology to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children with autism and their families.

Since graduating from HUJI’s MBA Med-Tech Innovation Program in 2026, Nataliya has taken her vision from the classroom to the startup world as CEO of Frienddy, an AI-powered wearable coaching platform designed to help children with autism develop greater independence. What began as an idea during her studies has grown into a venture working with families, autism specialists, hospitals, and innovation partners in Israel, with international expansion on the horizon.

Her experience at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has connected her with her co-founders and a diverse network of researchers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs, helping turn a shared mission into a growing company.

Congratulations to ViVac Pharma on winning the 2026 Asper Prize for “The Hebrew University Rising Startup”, receiving the competition’s top honor and a NIS 100,000 award after being selected from six finalists presenting to the University’s Board of Trustees.

Organized by ASPER - HUJI Innovate - מרכז החדשנות והיזמות של האוניברסיטה העברית in partnership with The Asper Foundation, the annual competition supports startups emerging from the Hebrew University community to strengthen the bridge between academia and industry.

ViVac Pharma was founded by Prof. Chezy Barenholz and Dr. Lior Nissim, head of the University’s Synthetic Biology Laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine, and is led by CEO Keren Leshem. It develops RNA-based immunotherapies powered by synthetic biology and precision delivery to reprogram the immune system to both recognize and eradicate cancer. The company’s programmable platform is designed to target and destroy solid tumors from within, with current programs targeting liver and ovarian cancers.

The Hebrew University recently hosted a delegation of foreign diplomats at the Edmond J. Safra Campus, as part of a mission organized by EIT Hub Israel, a global hub of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union.

The visit began at ASPER - HUJI Innovate - מרכז החדשנות והיזמות של האוניברסיטה העברית, the University's innovation and entrepreneurship center, where the center's CEO, Dr. Amnon Dekel, introduced the University's models and methods for driving innovation and entrepreneurship. Prof. Guy Harpaz, HUJI’s Vice President for International Affairs, then explored the strategic value of global academic partnerships and how international institutions can cooperate with the University, followed by healthcare innovation leader, Mr. Mahmoud Khweis, who spoke about medicine and innovation in MedTech cooperation.

The delegation then continued to the Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences (ELSC ) to witness cutting-edge research firsthand, visiting the laboratories of Prof. Naomi Habib and Dr. Lilach Avitan.

Thank you to the visitors for coming to our campus, and to the EIT Hub Israel for organizing this meaningful exchange.

This is what Saturday night's exciting announcement looked like: the largest donation in the history of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a landmark gift of a quarter of a billion dollars ($250 million) from philanthropist John Paulson.

This extraordinary gift will enable us to expand research and education in engineering and medicine, advance trauma research and rehabilitation, and continue driving scientific breakthroughs that make a meaningful impact on society in Israel and around the world.

A Historic Quarter-Billion-Dollar Gift to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem!

We are proud and delighted to announce the largest donation in the history of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem: a landmark gift of a quarter of a billion dollars (US$250 million) from American philanthropist and investor John Paulson, announced this evening at the University's Board of Governors Gala in Jerusalem.

This extraordinary gift will enable the University to expand its research and teaching activities in fields of national and international importance, strengthening its contributions to science, medicine, and Israeli society.

The gift will focus on three key areas:

- Establishing a new Faculty of Engineering, strengthening interdisciplinary connections between engineering, computer science, medicine, and the life sciences.
- Advancing medical and biomedical research and education, including the development of innovative AI-powered medical training models.
- Promoting research, rehabilitation, and treatment in trauma and post-traumatic stress, while strengthening the connection between academic expertise and the urgent needs of society.

In recognition of the Paulson family's longstanding generosity and commitment to the University, its historic Mount Scopus campus will be named "The Alina and John Paulson Campus, Mount Scopus, Jerusalem."

John Paulson, Founder and Chairman of the Paulson Family Foundation, stated: "Hebrew University is also among the most academically productive institutions in the world. Given its quality and productivity, I can think of no more deserving university for philanthropic support than Hebrew University."

Professor Tamir Sheafer, President of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, reflected on the significance of the gift:

"This gift enhances our ability to recruit world-class faculty, support outstanding students, equip laboratories with cutting-edge technology, and transform bold ideas into life-changing breakthroughs. This is far more than a historic act of philanthropy — it is a profound expression of confidence in Israel's human capital and a partnership in building our shared future."

The Hebrew University recently celebrated its annual Rector’s Prize Ceremony, honoring 80 outstanding bachelor's and master's students alongside distinguished faculty members recognized for research, teaching excellence, and lifetime achievement.

As part of the Ceremony, HUJI's International Office presented its 5th annual Prize for Excellence in Internationalization, honoring initiatives that build global academic bridges and expand our international research community. These are the awardees:

🥇 1st Prize: The "Belongings" Program, a joint Israeli-German doctoral research and training program of the Faculty of Humanities in partnership with UNIVERSITÄT LEIPZIG and the Dubnow-Institut, exploring Jewish material culture. Accepted by Prof. Yfaat Weiss.

🥈 2nd Prize: The International School of Agricultural Sciences at the Robert H Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Rehovot. Recognized for expanding global study and training opportunities for international and local researchers. Accepted by Dean Prof. Yael Mishael.

🥉 3rd Place: NeuroBridges, a multi-year summer neuroscience program led by Prof. Yonatan Loewenstein from the Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences (ELSC). The program connects young researchers from the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Accepted by Prof. Leon Deouell.

🎖️ Honorable Mention: The Faculty of Dental Medicine was recognized for leading 12 international academic study tours combining clinical training, university partnerships, and academic diplomacy, accepted by Prof. Doron Steinberg and Prof. Stella Chaushu.
