Hebrew Language: Speakers and Tutors in Perpetual Motion

Online workshop
Jerusalem, July 30 - August 3, 2023 / 12 - 15 Av 5783

Workshop Director: Dr. Judith Golan Ben-Uri, David Yellin Academic College of Education

The International Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization is pleased to announce that the ongoing Workshop on University Teaching of Hebrew Language is now accepting applications for this year’s session.
The workshop will take place on July 30 – August 3, 2023 / 12 - 15Av 5783 online. The workshop will focus on Learning and Teaching Language in a Constantly Changing World.
The International Center's summer workshops on University Teaching of Hebrew are designed to suit the interests of instructors of Hebrew as a foreign language in colleges and universities and to provide necessary theoretical knowledge and practical tools. The workshop includes lectures, practicums, and discussions.
We live in a period characterized by rapid changes in various areas of life, including the acceptance of opinions and ideas that allow different groups to develop independent variations of language, such as a gender language or a language of the LGBTQ community. In addition, the digital changes force language instructors to make adjustments to their teaching. During the pandemic period we adopted digital developments and learned to teach remotely, but digital innovations did not stop there and artificial intelligence is already posing new challenges to humanity in general and teachers in particular. Language instructors will obviously have to address these new challenges.
We invite you to discuss these challenges during our workshop. The program includes theoretical lectures about the flexibility of the Hebrew language that allows for diversity and variety among speakers of different groups; participation in didactic workshops that display innovative teaching methods and study materials that have been developed in recent years; and joint discussions on concrete issues related to Hebrew teaching.
The workshop is conducted in cooperation with the Division of Hebrew Language Instruction at the Rothberg International School for Overseas Students and with the Academy of the Hebrew Language.
Lecturers who are interested in presenting at the workshop, please contact Dr. Judith Golan Ben-Uri via the Center's e-mail below. In addition, all participants accepted to the workshop and interested in taking an active part in it are invited to submit a proposal to present the results of their work in the field.
General information:
 Participation is limited to a small number of university teachers of Hebrew, selected from applicants from all over the world.
 Participation fee is $250
 The workshop will be conducted in Hebrew.
 The program of the workshop will be published soon.

Planning Lessons in a Changing Classroom: How to Maximize Teaching Efficacy in Different Situations

Continuing Workshop on University Teaching of Hebrew Language
Jerusalem, July 31- August 4, 2022 / 3-7 Av 5782

Workshop Director: Dr. Tania Notarius (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem;
Polis - the Jerusalem Institute of Languages and Humanities)

The International Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization is pleased to announce that we are renewing our activity, and the Continuing Workshop on University Teaching of Hebrew Language is now accepting applications for this year’s session. The workshop will take place on July 31– August 4, 2022 / 3–7 Av 5781 in Jerusalem (with the possibility of hybrid participation). The workshop will focus on Planning Lessons in a Changing Classroom: How to Maximize Teaching Efficacy in Different Situations.
The International Center's workshops on University Teaching of Hebrew are designed to suit the interests of instructors of Hebrew as a foreign language in colleges and universities and to provide necessary theoretical knowledge and practical tools. The workshop includes lectures, practicums, and discussions.
The field of Second Language Acquisition in our time, marked by the pandemic and other global challenges, faces hurdles in arriving at new audiences via innovative teaching methods. The good old times of a traditional classroom lesson with a board and a book have passed away from us. Nowadays the teacher needs to be ready to teach offline in a physical class, online in a virtual class, or to mix both modes in a hybrid classroom, combining printed and digital materials, applications, sites, and other informational sources, with a goal to impart to students the necessary language acquisition skills of speaking, reading, comprehension, and writing. A sufficient level of flexibility is required to dynamically adjust to such changing conditions in a class, and to choose appropriate ways of instruction. This year at the Workshop on University Teaching of Hebrew Language, we will talk about the techniques of preparing a lesson plan in accordance with changing classroom conditions: selecting materials in the most efficient way, patterning exercises, and creating communicative modes, and reaching out to all lesson participants, aiming at maximum learning impact.
The workshop is conducted in cooperation with the Division of Hebrew Language Instruction at the Rothberg International School for Overseas Students and with the Academy of the Hebrew Language. Workshop participants will have an opportunity to observe classes conducted by Division teachers and to hold joint discussions on concrete issues related to Hebrew teaching.
Lecturers who are interested in presenting at the workshop, please contact Dr. Tanya Notarius via Center's e-mail below. In addition, all participants accepted to the workshop and interested in taking an active part in it, are invited to submit a proposal in order to present the fruits of their work in the field.
General information:
 Participation is limited to a small number of university teachers of Hebrew, selected from applicants from all over the world.
 Participation fee is $350 for on-campus participation and $ 275 for virtual participants.
 The workshop will be conducted in Hebrew.
 The costs of accommodation, board, and travel to and from Israel are the responsibility of participants or their sponsoring institutions.
 The program of the workshop will be published soon.

Interested applicants should submit a CV by e-mail to Ms. Masha Kitaichyk (administrative coordinator of the Center):

The Common Framework and the Hebrew Language Teaching:
Theoretical Approach, Practical Applications, and Distant Learning

Online workshop
Jerusalem, July 11-15, 2021 / 2-6 Av 5781

Workshop Director: Dr. Tania Notarius (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem;

The workshop will take place on July 11–15, 2021 / 2–6 Av 5781 in a virtual mode. The topic of the workshop will be the same as announced in 2020 (cancelled because of the situation) and will focus on the Common Framework of Reference as applies to the Hebrew Language Teaching, with a special emphasis on the communicative methods of teaching language in a virtual classroom.

The International Center's workshops on University Teaching of Hebrew are designed to suit the interests of instructors of Hebrew as a foreign language in colleges and universities and to provide necessary theoretical knowledge and practical tools. The workshop includes lectures, practicums, and discussions.

The field of foreign language teaching is changing worldwide, and the recent overall shift to the online teaching is only one of the actual challenges. On the one hand, the communicative and goal-oriented methods are gaining wider acknowledgement. On the other hand, there is a need for objective tools for setting level hierarchy and level placement, for assessment of language performance, and for providing a basis for mutual recognition by academic institutions. The expert team in the Division of Hebrew Language Instruction at the HU has been working at formulating the framework that assesses broad levels of ability in terms of the goal-oriented approach suggested by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The framework promotes reception, production, interaction, and mediation abilities for spoken and written communication. Likewise, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has launched the Language Centre, which applies CEFR in the teaching of several foreign languages in the Faculty of Humanities, working in close cooperation with instructors of the Division of Hebrew Language Instruction.

While the common reference framework is language-neutral, learning goals and methods in class are language-specific, and the long-established heritage of Hebrew language teaching remains relevant. New textbooks are necessary that will address distinct groups of learners and provide them with strategies for communication and proficient operation at different levels and in specific situations. The methods of Hebrew teacher training are also a subject of on-going change. We invite you to take part in the process of strategic thinking and planning in the field of Hebrew language instruction. Candidates who have concrete experience with the methods and practices of CEFR, as well as with alternative global frameworks (like ACTFL), and with the methods of the online language instruction, are particularly encouraged to apply and, optionally, to present the fruits of their labor.

The workshop is conducted in cooperation with the Division of Hebrew Language Instruction at the Rothberg International School for Overseas Students. Workshop participants will have an opportunity to observe classes conducted by Division teachers and to hold joint discussions on concrete issues related to Hebrew teaching. The Academy of the Hebrew Language is a co-organizer of the workshop; the program will include lectures and presentations by Academy staff.

General information:
 Participation is limited to a small number of university teachers of Hebrew, selected from applicants from all over the world.
 The fee for participation in the online workshop is US$120 for five days (we reduced the fees considerably). Two days of your choice - $70. One-day participation - $40.
 The workshop will be conducted in Hebrew.
