Africa is the world’s second-largest continent, yet it remains one of the regions with relatively limited climate data.
A few months ago, the project DELTA: Africa, led by Prof. Dan Yakir of the Weizmann Institute of Science, set out to help close that gap. Using a mobile research laboratory, the project explores how land-use changes affect carbon, water, and energy cycles across ecosystems in East and Southern Africa.
After weeks at sea traveling around the continent, the laboratory arrived in Kenya. In collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and additional local partners, the team began its first field measurements across savannas, forests, and agricultural areas.
One of the first research sites was the Kapiti Conservancy, where researchers documented the beginning of the rainy season and tracked ecosystem changes in real time. Last week, the team arrived at the Ngare Ndare Forest on the slopes of Mount Kenya, where a new measurement campaign is now underway in collaboration with local communities and regional researchers.
The project is expected to continue for the next two to three years, with the mobile laboratory traveling between sites across Africa to collect data that will help deepen our understanding of the continent’s ecosystems and their role in the global climate system.

בהובלת פרופ’ דן יקיר ממכון ויצמן למדע. במסגרת הפרויקט, מעבדת מחקר ניידת חוקרת כיצד שינויי שימושי קרקע משפיעים על מחזורי הפחמן, המים והאנרגיה במערכות אקולוגיות במזרח ובדרום אפריקה.
לאחר מסע ימי ממושך סביב היבשת, הגיעה המעבדה לקניה. בשיתוף פעולה עם

We already know that the most meaningful things happen when people come together. That’s the power of science, and the power of community.
Yesterday, we headed out for another volunteer day, this time in Kibbutz Zikim near the Gaza border. In partnership with the Alon and Ella Foundation, around 50 employees and students from the Weizmann Institute came together to help build and renovate shared spaces across the kibbutz. Together, we created seating and kitchen areas for kindergartens, set up outdoor gathering spaces, prepared flower planters, and spent the day doing what matters most: giving back, working together, and supporting one another.
The volunteer day brought together people from across the Institute’s scientific and administrative communities, creating a great opportunity to connect and collaborate outside of everyday work.
We’re glad we could be part of it, and we’re already looking forward to the next volunteer day.

אנחנו כבר יודעים שהדברים המשמעותיים ביותר נבנים יחד. זהו כוחו של המדע, זוהי כוחה של קהילה.
אתמול יצאנו ליום התנדבות נוסף, והפעם בקיבוץ זיקים שבעוטף. בשיתוף עם עמותת אלון ואלה, הגיעו כ-50 עובדות, עובדים, סטודנטיות וסטודנטים ממכון ויצמן לבנות ולשדרג פינות בקיבוץ. יחד בנינו פינות ישיבה ומטבח לגני הילדים, הקמנו פינות זולה, הכנו אדניות לפרחים ונהננו מיום של עשייה משותפת, נתינה וערבות הדדית.
יום ההתנדבות הפגיש בין אנשים מכל קצוות המכון, מהקהילה המדעית ומהקהילה המנהלית, ויצר הזדמנות מצוינת להכיר ולעבוד יחד מחוץ לשגרת היום-יום.
שמחים על ההזדמנות לקחת חלק בפעילות בונה ומשמעותית, וכבר מחכים ליום ההתנדבות הבא!

Meet Our International Students: Alma Carolina Sanchez Rocha, a postdoctoral fellow from Mexico City in the lab of Prof. Naama Barkai in the Molecular Genetics Department.
Carolina’s research addresses a central question in cell biology: how cells determine when and which genes to activate. Looking ahead, she aims to uncover how intrinsically disordered proteins govern gene regulation, and how these mechanisms may open new avenues for understanding and treating human disease.
Carolina’s journey to the Weizmann Institute of Science began years earlier, when she was a young master’s student in Mexico City and had the chance to meet Prof. Ada Yonath, Nobel laureate in Chemistry. For Carolina, it was a rare opportunity to meet a world-renowned scientist, and above all, to hear a piece of advice that stayed with her: “Preserve and follow your own path, even when others doubt you.”
As a first-generation university student, those words carried deep personal meaning. They continued to shape her scientific journey over the years and ultimately led her to the Weizmann Institute of Science, the very place where Prof. Ada Yonath conducts her groundbreaking research, bringing Carolina’s journey full circle.

הכירו את הסטודנטים הבינלאומיים שלנו: אלמה קרולינה סנצ'ס רוצ'ה, פוסט-דוקטורנטית ממקסיקו סיטי במעבדה של פרופ' נעמה ברקאי במחלקה לגנטיקה מולקולרית. מחקרה מתמקד בשאלה בסיסית אך מורכבת בחיי התא: מה קובע אילו גנים יופעלו ומתי. היא מבקשת להעמיק את ההבנה של תפקיד החלבונים הגמישים בתא, ולבחון את הקשר בניהם לבין מחלות אנושיות, בשאיפה לתרום לפיתוח כיוונים רפואיים חדשים.
הגעתה של קרולינה אל מכון ויצמן לא היתה מקרית. כשהיתה סטודנטית לתואר שני במקסיקו סיטי, פגשה את פרופ' עדה יונת, זוכת פרס נובל בכימיה. זו היתה הזדמנות נדירה לפגוש מדענית ברמה עולמית, ממנה שמעה משפט שנחרט בה: "התמידי והמשיכי בדרכך, גם אם אחרים מטילים בך ספק". כבת לדור ראשון להשכלה גבוהה במשפחתה, מילים אלה קיבלו משמעות אישית מיוחדת. הן ליוו אותה זמן רב לאחר אותו מפגש, והשפיעו על האופן שבו עיצבה את דרכה המדעית, עד שהובילו אותה, שנים לאחר מכן, למכון ויצמן למדע, ביתה המדעי של פרופ' יונת.

What happens when the immune system remembers cancer cells?
For years, memory B cells remain stored in the lymph nodes. Antibody-producing immune cells that have previously encountered a pathogen and were “trained” to recognize and attack it efficiently if it returns. Researchers from Prof. Ziv Shulman’s lab at the Weizmann Institute of Science discovered that memory B cells can also be active against cancer cells.
The researchers identified memory cells in ovarian cancer patients that are capable of migrating from the lymph nodes to the tumor and producing effective antibodies against it. The study, published in Immunity, advances new possibilities for developing vaccines and immune memory-based therapies against cancer.
Could such treatments also help prevent cancer from returning after recovery? The findings show that some of the memory cells identified in the study produce antibodies against a central protein in ovarian cancer that is crucial for its spread. The researchers believe that cancer cells may struggle to alter such essential proteins, meaning that antibodies targeting them could potentially provide long-term protection >> https://bit.ly/cancer-memory-eng

לאורך שנים נשמרים בקשרי הלימפה תאי זיכרון מסוג B - יצרני נוגדנים שפגשו בעבר גורם מחלה ואומנו לזהות ולתקוף אותו ביעילות אם ישוב. מדענים ממעבדתו של פרופ' זיו שולמן במכון ויצמן למדע גילו כי ישנם תאי B זיכרון פעילים גם נגד תאי סרטן.
החוקרים זיהו אצל חולות סרטן השחלה תאי זיכרון שמסוגלים לנדוד מקשרי הלימפה לגידול ולייצר כנגדו נוגדנים יעילים. המחקר, שהתפרסם ב-Immunity, מקדם אפשרויות חדשות לפיתוח חיסונים וטיפולים מבוססי זיכרון חיסוני נגד סרטן.

We are proud to be part of TWIN-Q, Israel’s new national center for quantum computing based on atomic qubits.
Researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science, together with partners from Tel Aviv University, the Technion, and the Hebrew University, are joining forces to advance quantum computing research, strengthen Israel’s quantum ecosystem, and help train the next generation of quantum scientists and engineers.
The center unites leading research groups from Weizmann’s Faculty of Physics, including the groups of Profs. Roee Ozeri, Nir Davidson, Ofer Firstenberg, and Ady Stern, along with the groups of Drs. Tom Manovitz and Ziv Meir.
The collaboration’s joint meetings have already connected researchers, students, and engineers for discussions on scientific challenges, emerging technologies, and future collaboration across the TWIN-Q community.
Looking forward to the discoveries, collaborations, and breakthroughs ahead.

במסגרת הפעילות כבר התקיימו מפגשים משותפים של חוקרים, סטודנטים ומהנדסים מהמרכז, שהתמקדו באתגרים מדעיים וטכנולוגיים ובחיזוק שיתופי הפעולה בין הקבוצות.

For International Diversity Day, we chose to spotlight the people helping make the Weizmann Institute of Science a more open, diverse and inclusive place.
Over the years, the Diversity and Inclusion Office has presented awards to members of our community who have led social initiatives, supported students, advanced equal opportunity, built communities and created spaces where people feel they belong.
From community leadership and volunteer work, to supporting underrepresented populations and building bridges across cultures, each of this year’s honorees reminds us that diverse communities are built by people who choose to notice, initiate and take action for others.

How do you teach AI to a generation already growing up alongside it?
Last week, the annual conference for students in ORT’s Scientific Excellence Program, “Humans, AI and Machines,” took place at the Weizmann Institute of Science, led by the Department of Science Teaching.
The conference marked the culmination of a year of in-depth learning about artificial intelligence, combining scientific foundations, ethical questions, practical skills, and critical thinking around the use of AI tools. Around 130 students from across Israel took part in the event, participating in scientific activities across campus and presenting projects they developed throughout the program.
We’re proud to take part in an initiative that gives students not only practical tools, but also the ability to think critically, ask better questions, and engage thoughtfully with a rapidly changing world.

איך מלמדים בינה מלאכותית את מי שכבר גדלים לתוך מהפכת ה-AI?
הכנס השנתי לתלמידות ולתלמידי כיתות המצוינות המדעית של רשת אורט, הלומדים בתוכנית ״אדם, בינה ומכונה״, התקיים בשבוע שעבר בקמפוס בהובלת המחלקה להוראת המדעים במכון ויצמן למדע.
הכנס חתם שנה של למידה מעמיקה בתחום הבינה המלאכותית, שכללה היכרות עם יסודות מדעיים, עיסוק בשאלות אתיות, רכישת מיומנויות ופיתוח חשיבה ביקורתית בשימוש בכלי הבינה המלאכותית. במהלך היום השתתפו כ־130 תלמידות ותלמידים מכל רחבי הארץ, ובמסגרתו הם לקחו חלק בפעילויות מדעיות במכון והציגו את הפרויקטים שפיתחו במסגרת התוכנית.
גאים לקחת חלק בפרויקט החשוב הזה, שמעניק כלים יישומיים לצד התמודדות מושכלת עם עולם משתנה.

Shavuot is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate local makers and enjoy the festive atmosphere that the holiday brings.
Surrounded by flower baskets and hay bales, we spent the day enjoying a cheerful market and an ice cream truck that made its way across campus, offering a sweet break in the middle of the day.

חג השבועות הוא הזדמנות מעולה לפרגן לתוצרת מקומית וליהנות מאווירת חג צבעונית ונעימה.
בין סלסלות הפרחים לערימות החציר, נהנינו היום מיריד חגיגי ומאוטו גלידה שהסתובב ברחבי הקמפוס והוסיף רגע מתוק באמצע היום.
