This week, the Departments of Molecular Genetics and Molecular Cell Biology held their annual departmental retreats.
Department members took a break from their usual lab routines to connect in a different setting, exchange ideas, share their research, and get to know one another better outside their day-to-day environment.
Activities included group “speed dating” sessions that helped break the ice and spark new connections, alongside outdoor activities in the Hula Valley.

Our new master’s and MD-PhD students arrived yesterday for the start of Orientation Week at the Weizmann School of Science.
With the academic year starting in less than a week, our new master’s students have a few days to explore the campus, meet representatives from the different faculties, and get to know the place that will become their second home over the coming years.
Meanwhile, our MD-PhD students have already begun their studies at the School of Medicine today.
Wishing everyone a great start!

This morning, on Israel’s National Memorial Day for the October 7 attacks, we set up a memorial space in the lobby of the Weizmann School of Science - a place to pause, remember, and honor those who are no longer with us.

Students from the Science Teaching Department recently came together for a day of debate, mindfulness, and an open conversation about academic life.
In the debate workshop, they learned the principles of building and presenting different arguments, explored the “rules of the game,” and put them into practice by debating a range of topics. The mindfulness session offered a change of pace, with a focus on presence and self-reflection.
The day concluded with a conversation with Prof. Maya Schuldiner, Dean of the Weizmann School of Science, about a side of academic life that isn’t always discussed. She spoke candidly about the difficulties and failures she has experienced along the way, their place in an academic career, and a different way of looking at academic success - one that also acknowledges what happens behind the scenes.

Yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, and movement became part of campus life with the opening of the Weizmann School of Science’s new Well-Being Hub.
Students had a chance to try out the different activities at the launch event. The activities will continue weekly throughout the year, offering a little space to slow down when needed.

Painful knees or better chances of survival? Scientists from the Weizmann Institute of Science and Kyoto University reveal a weak point in the human skeleton.
A new study published in Nature shows that an entire group of genes responsible for producing molecules known as GAGs is less active in humans than in other great apes. The researchers found that humans have only about one-third as much GAG material in their cartilage, making it thinner, less elastic and less able to cushion the forces generated by everyday movement.
“The drop in the production of GAGs is the most extreme genetic change our skeleton has undergone in the course of evolution,” says Dr. David Gokhman, who co-led the study. “We believe we've found an evolutionary basis for why humans are so vulnerable to osteoarthritis.”
So why would evolution preserve such a problematic trait? Painful joints may be a hidden price we pay for traits that make us human >> https://bit.ly/bad-knees-eng
