We, the Weizmann Institute of Science community, deeply mourn the passing of Prof. Ada Yonath of the Institute’s Chemical and Structural Biology Department. Prof. Yonath pioneered the study of the ribosome, the cell’s protein factory, and was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her research in this field. Her decades-long scientific journey led to an understanding of how various antibiotics work, helping pave the way for the development of new antibiotics and the fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Yonath, the first Israeli woman scientist to win a Nobel Prize, also received dozens of other awards and honors, including the Israel Prize in Chemistry and the Wolf Prize in Chemistry. Prof. Yonath exemplified how scientific vision, the courage to choose a major scientific question and unwavering dedication to its pursuit can lead to extraordinary achievements and expand the boundaries of knowledge for the future of humanity.

אנו, קהילת מכון ויצמן למדע, מרכינים ראש על פטירתה של פרופ' עדה יונת מהמחלקה לביולוגיה מבנית וכימית במכון. פרופ' יונת היתה חלוצה של חקר הריבוזום, בית-החרושת לחלבונים של התא, וזכתה בפרס נובל לכימיה לשנת 2009 על מחקריה בתחום. מסעה המדעי, שנמשך עשרות שנים, הוביל להבנת דרך פעולתן של אנטיביוטיקות שונות וסלל את הדרך לפיתוחן של תרופות אנטיביוטיות חדשות ולמאבק בחיידקים עמידים לאנטיביוטיקה.
יונת, המדענית הישראלית הראשונה שזכתה בפרס נובל, קטפה גם עשרות פרסים ואותות הוקרה, בהם פרס ישראל לכימיה ופרס וולף בכימיה. פרופ' יונת היא דוגמה ומופת לדרך שבה חזון מדעי, אומץ בבחירת שאלה מדעית גדולה ודבקות במטרה יכולים להביא להצלחה כבירה ולהרחבת גבולות הידע למען עתיד האנושות כולה. יהי זכרה ברוך.

While many people are gathering to watch the World Cup these days, yesterday's screening was for something entirely different.
After seven years of research, members of Prof. Ilan Koren's research group at the Weizmann Institute of Science, together with colleagues from Prof. Yoav Schechner's group at the Technion, gathered to watch the launch of CloudCT, a joint project of the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Technion, and ZFT in Germany.
CloudCT is the first satellite in a planned constellation designed to create 3D maps of the internal structure and properties of clouds using tomography, a technology more commonly associated with medical imaging.
By capturing simultaneous images from multiple angles, the mission aims to provide new insights into cloud structure and improve our understanding of Earth's climate and global warming.
The countdown is over, now the mission begins.

לא רק הקרנות של משחקי מונדיאל - אתמול התקיימה הקרנה לא פחות מרגשת: שיגור הלווין CloudCT מבסיס חיל האוויר ונדנברג בקליפורניה.
לאחר שבע שנות מחקר, נפגשו חברות וחברי קבוצת המחקר של פרופ' אילן קורן מהמחלקה למדעי כדור הארץ וחברים מהקבוצה של יואב שכנר מהטכניון לצפות בשיגור הלוויין CloudCT - פרויקט משותף למכון ויצמן למדע, לטכניון וחברת ZFT בגרמניה. הלוויין הוא הראשון מתוך מערך לוויינים שעתיד למפות בתלת-מימד את המבנה הפנימי ואת תכונותיהם של עננים באמצעות טומוגרפיה - טכנולוגיה נפוצה בעולם הרפואה.
באמצעות צילומים ממספר זוויות, המערך צפוי לספק מידע חדש על מבנה העננים ולשפר את חקר אקלים כדור הארץ וההתחממות הגלובלית.
הספירה לאחור הסתיימה, ועכשיו מתחיל פרק חדש במסע המדעי.

ברכות חמות לד"ר אור הדס מהמחלקה למדעי הסביבה וחקר כוכבי הלכת במכון ויצמן למדע על זכייתו בפרס Dimitris N. Chorafas לשנת 2026 לדוקטורנטים מצטיינים!
הפרס, הנושא את שמו של המהנדס, החוקר והפילנתרופ דימיטריס כוראפאס, מוענק מדי שנה לדוקטורנט מצטיין אחד בתחומי המדעים, ההנדסה והרפואה בכל אחת מאוניברסיטאות המחקר המשתתפות בתוכנית, ובהן מוסדות מובילים בעולם כגון MIT, UCLA ו-ETH. מטרת הפרס היא להוקיר מחקר בעל מצוינות אקדמית יוצאת דופן ופוטנציאל משמעותי לקידום הידע המדעי.

מחקרו של אור עסק בסופות ברוחבי הביניים, הסופות האחראיות לרוב אירועי מזג האוויר הקיצוניים מחוץ לאזורים הטרופיים, ובהן גם הסופות הפוקדות את ישראל מדי חורף. באמצעות מעקב אחר אלפי סופות וניתוח התנהגותן הקולקטיבית, הוא גישר בין שתי גישות מרכזיות בחקר הסופות, הגישה המטאורולוגית, המתמקדת בסופות בודדות, והגישה האקלימית, החוקרת את המאפיינים הסטטיסטיים של פעילות הסופות. המחקר חשף מנגנונים העומדים בבסיסם של פרדוקסים מרכזיים במדעי האקלים, והוביל לפיתוח מסגרות תאורטיות וכלים מבוססי למידת מכונה המאפשרים לבחון את התנהגותן של סופות בקנה מידה רחב. כלים אלה צפויים לסייע לחוקרי אקלים ולמטאורולוגים להבין טוב יותר את הקשרים בין פעילות הסופות לבין מערכת האקלים, ולצמצם את הפער בין שתי נקודות המבט המחקריות.

Warm congratulations to Dr. Or Hadas of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences Weizmann Institute of Science on receiving the 2026 Dimitris N. Chorafas Award for Outstanding PhD Students!

Named after engineer, researcher, and philanthropist Dimitris Chorafas, the award is presented annually to one outstanding doctoral student in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine at each participating research university, including leading institutions such as MIT, UCLA, and ETH. The award recognizes research of exceptional academic excellence and significant potential to advance scientific knowledge.

Or’s research focused on extratropical storms, the storms responsible for most extreme weather events outside the tropics, including those that affect Israel each winter. By tracking thousands of storms and analyzing their collective behavior, he bridged two major approaches to storm research: the meteorological approach, which focuses on individual storms, and the climate approach, which examines the statistical characteristics of storm activity.

His work revealed mechanisms underlying key climate paradoxes and led to the development of theoretical frameworks and machine-learning-based tools for studying storm behavior on large scales. These tools are expected to help climate scientists and meteorologists better understand the links between storm activity and the climate system, thereby bridging the gap between these two research perspectives.
