How do cells deal with tangled proteins?
A new study from Prof. Gilad Haran's lab at the Weizmann Institute of Science, published in Nature Communications, reveals how energy-efficient cellular machines untangle misfolded protein chains. The findings show how cells perform quality control on their proteins, may help explain why this control fails in diseases such as neurodegeneration and cancer, and inspire the development of efficient artificial molecular machines.
“In this new study, we were able to glimpse the inner workings of an important molecular machine that has been operating in cells for billions of years,” says Prof. Haran. “In many diseases, the quality control of cellular proteins fails, leading to the accumulation of misfolded proteins. Understanding these control mechanisms is the basis for discovering why this happens and how it might be prevented.” >> https://bit.ly/escape-eng

מחקר חדש ממעבדתו של פרופ' גלעד הרן במכון ויצמן למדע, שהתפרסם ב-Nature Communications, חושף כיצד מכונות תאיות פורמות במהירות שרשראות חלבוניות שהתקפלו למבנה לא תקין.
הממצאים מראים כיצד תאים מבצעים בקרת איכות על חלבוניהם, סוללים דרך להבין מדוע בקרת האיכות כושלת במחלות כמו ניוון מוחי וסרטן ונותנים השראה לפיתוח מכונות מולקולריות יעילות וחסכוניות מעשה ידי אדם.
