שני מחלקות פועלות במסגרת המכון: - המחלקה להידרולוגיה סביבתית ומיקרוביולוגיה - המחלקה להתפלה וטיפול במים.
חברי המכון לחקר המים פעילים במגוון גדול של מחקרים בישראל ובשיתופי פעולה עם מדענים מרחבי העולם. קיים דגש על מחקר ופיתוח הקשור למקורות מים באזורים צחיחים באופן כללי, ובתנאי הסביבה הקיימים בנגב בפרט. במחלקה להתפלה מתבצעים מחקרים הקשורים לממברנות עבור טיפול במים ושיפור היכולות שלהן, מחקרים הנוגעים לתהליכים בפני שטח ותהליכי התפלה ברמה ההנדסית. מחקרים אלו מיושמים במתקנים בישראל ובעולם. The Zuckerberg Institute of Water Research is a research institute located in Midreshet Ben-Gurion. We are associated with Ben-Gurion University and offer advanced degrees, including MSc. Our interdisciplinary team includes hydrologists, soil scientists, geologists, chemists, microbiologists, and engineers. Studies are in an international program and are conducted in English. Students come here from all throughout the world including: the United States, China, India, Peru, Spain, Germany, Armenia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Chile, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, France, South Africa, Canada and many more countries. Two departments operate within the Institute: The Department of Environmental Hydrology & Microbiology and The Department of Desalination & Water Treatment. ZIWR members are actively engaged in research projects within Israel, and collaborate with other scientists worldwide. Emphasis is placed on research and development of water resources in drylands in general, and on the local conditions of the Negev in particular. Additionally, novel research is conducted on water treatment and desalination technologies which are used worldwide.

Science doesn't always happen in the lab. Sometimes it happens on a boat. ⛵🌊
Meet Ariel Goldberg (MSc student) and Dr. Elad Levintal (PI) out on the Sea of Galilee, putting two greenhouse gas flux chambers head to head — Licor's commercial smart GHG chamber vs. their own DIY version.
This approach, of affordable, open source systems, may enable a global increase of GHG flux measurements, increasing the knowledge that will shape future environmental policies and democratizing science.
This is field research at its finest: hands-on, creative, and asking the questions that matter for understanding water-atmosphere gas exchange in real-world conditions.
