Van Dyck painting thieves escaped in a boat - or do they?

Art burglars who stole a work by 17th Century master Anthony Van Dyck may have used a boat to escape after the heist, police have said.

A Soldier On Horseback by the Flemish artist, a leading court painter under King Charles I, dates from around 1616.

The work was among three stolen from the University of Oxford's Christ Church Picture Gallery in March 2020.

Thames Valley Police said a boat could have been used "to access and leave the site".

The thieves also made off with A Boy Drinking (c. 1580) by Annibale Carracci, and A Rocky Coast, With Soldiers Studying a Plan (late 1640s) by Salvator Rosa.

Artsproof is working hard to find stolen artworks and protect the art world from dealing with these forbidden pieces.

Thief Walks Out of Gallery With a $20,000 Salvador Dalí Etching

An employee of the San Francisco gallery turned his back for a moment. When he looked again, the work had vanished.
For an art heist, it was a simple affair. A man ducked into a San Francisco gallery and walked out less than a minute later holding one of its best pieces: a $20,000 Salvador Dalí etching.

“I was alone at the gallery and turned my back for a minute, and when I looked it was gone,” Rasjad Hopkins, an associate director of the gallery, said on Tuesday. “I never saw the person.”

The artwork, a limited-edition hand-colored 1960s Surrealist etching titled “La Girafe en Feu,” or “The Giraffe on Fire,” had been sitting on an easel at the gallery, Dennis Rae Fine Art, when it was taken on Sunday.

Normally, the Spanish artist’s work would be tethered to the easel, Mr. Hopkins said, but on the day of the theft it was not. A security camera in the gallery was not turned on at the time.

A French lawyer allegedly stole her client’s $22-million Yves Klein painting.

France’s judicial police have opened an investigation into a woman’s allegation that her former attorney stole her Yves Klein painting valued at up to €20 million ($22 million). According to a report in Europe 1, the painting’s 80-year-old owner said she was persuaded by her lawyer at the time to entrust her with the painting, which the attorney claimed was at risk of theft or damage.

Since then, the lawyer has allegedly ignored all requests for the painting’s restitution and deposited it in a storage facility where she is listed as its owner.
As proof, the lawyer allegedly produced a letter in which the painting’s owner gifted it to her, which the plaintiff claims is fake.
Neither party in the dispute has been named, nor has the painting at its center been identified.

The painting was given to the plaintiff by Klein himself in 1956 when she was just 17 years old.

According to Europe 1’s report, several experts have valued it at up to $22 million.
The current auction record for a work by Klein was established at Christie’s in London in 2012 when his Le Rose du bleu (in the picture) sold for $36.7 million.

Japanese museum demands compensation before it will return stolen £1m painting to family of British Baronet

A Japanese museum is refusing to return a £1 million Joshua Reynolds painting stolen from a Suss*x home in 1984 unless it receives “just and reasonable compensation”.

The oil-on-canvas portrait was painted in about 1780 but stolen from the home of Sir Henry and Lady Price with a number of other works of art and family heirlooms.

Four years after the theft, the painting is thought to have been auctioned at Sotheby’s in London to an art dealer, who sold it to the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum in 1990.

The family of the late Sir Henry - a businessman from Yorkshire who founded Fifty Shilling Tailors stores in 1905 and later became a well-known philanthropist - engaged Art Recovery International to locate the painting and it was subsequently found in Tokyo.

But officials of the museum have refused to meet with the original owners of the painting and demanded payment of “a reasonable sum” before even engaging in discussions over the stolen work, a demand that is a contravention of ICOM guidelines.

When dealing with cases like these you need to make these kinds of decisions all the time.

What do you think the Japanese museum should do?

The Flower portrait is the name of one of the painted portraits of William Shakespeare - but it's actually a fake painting.

A portrait of William Shakespeare signed with a date of 1609 was long considered by many to be a rare depiction of the English playwright created during his lifetime.

That was before a 2005 investigation by art experts with the National Portrait Gallery in London determined that the oil painting on wood panel was only as old as the early 19th century.

Called the “Flower Portrait” after Sir Desmond Flower, who gave it to the Royal Shakespeare Company, it regularly appeared on books and publications of the Bard’s plays over the last century or so.

It’s now believed that the portrait, in which a wide-eyed Shakespeare wears a big white-collar, was based on the Droeshout portrait that accompanied the first folio publication of Shakespeare's work in 1623.

Previously, it was theorized that the “Flower portrait” was actually the inspiration for the Droeshout engraving, a posthumous portrait of Shakespeare.

One of the giveaways in the Flower portrait fraud was the chrome yellow present in the paint, a pigment that only dates to the early 1800s.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is on the lookout for roughly $50,000 worth of paintings stolen from a northside home earlier this month.

On Wednesday, July 10 just after 6:30 p.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a burglary call in the 6900 block of North Chula Vista Reserve Place, near the intersection of West Ina and North Oracle Roads, and were told the house was broken into earlier that day.

Among the possessions taken were three paintings by then-9-year-old Kieron Williamson. The three pieces, “City Temple,” Kelling Cottages” and Thurne Mill,” were estimated to be worth approximately $50,000 by the owner.

Williamson, 16, is a watercolor artist from England whose paintings have sold for thousands of dollars. In 2010, a Williamson exhibition sold roughly £150,000 ($187,000) worth of paintings in under an hour.

Someone Stole a Golden Egg From a $2.8M Outdoor Dalí Sculpture in Vancouver

“Space Venus,” a $2.8 million sculpture by the famous surrealist, was found missing its shiny egg on Sunday morning. The theft might bring an end to an annual public art project dedicated to Dali’s sculptures.

“Space Venus” (1977-84), a 12-foot-high bronze sculpture depicting the Roman goddess of love, s*x, and beauty, features a split torso adorned with Dalí’s famous motifs — a melting watch, a golden egg, and crawling bugs. The sculpture was brought to Canada by Chali Rosso Art Gallery in Vancouver after being displayed in several locations around the world. In May, the gallery placed the sculpture at Hornby and West Hastings Street in the Downtown Vancouver Heritage District, where it will stay until September 2019.

We are keeping a close look at this case and will update you with any new information.
