We are pleased to invite you to a conversation with esteemed journalist and author Joshua Leifer, author of Tablets Shattered, The End of an American Jewish Century and the Future of Jewish Life.​

Tablets Shattered is Joshua Leifer’s lively and personal history of the fractured American Jewish present. Formed in the middle decades of the twentieth century, the settled-upon pillars of American Jewish self-definition (Americanism, Zionism, and liberalism) have begun to collapse. The binding trauma of Holocaust memory grows ever-more attenuated; soon there will be no living survivors. After two millennia of Jewish life defined by diasporic existence, the majority of the world’s Jews will live in a sovereign Jewish state by 2050. Against the backdrop of national political crises, resurgent global antisemitism, and the horrors of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, Leifer provides an illuminating and meticulously reported map of contemporary Jewish life and a sober conjecture about its future.

In this event, Prof. Julie Cooper, Director of the Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism and Racism, will converse with Joshua Leifer exploring themes from his book.

We are glad to share the recording of the symposium we organized with Franklin Foer, distinguished staff writer at The Atlantic and former editor of The New Republic, where he examines how rising antisemitism from both the right and left threatens to end an unprecedented era of Jewish American safety and prosperity—and potentially unravel the liberal order they helped create. The lecture is based on Foer's widely-discussed article "The Golden Age of American Jews is Over." His analysis is followed by responses from two leading scholars: Prof. Hana Wirth-Nesher (Tel Aviv University) and Prof. Eli Lederhendler (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) The symposium is moderated by Prof. Julie Cooper, Director of the Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism and Racism.

Antisemitism after October 7th and the War in Gaza

Research Grant

Following the attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7th, and the subsequent war in Gaza, Jewish organizations and the press are reporting a significant increase in the scope and volume of antisemitic incidents against Jewish individuals and communities worldwide. Others argue that the rise in antisemitic incidents shows continuities with responses in past conflicts between Israel and the Palestinians, and that some accusations of antisemitism have the effect - whether intentionally or not - of stifling criticisms of Israel’s war on Gaza. The reports on increased antisemitic incidents, coupled with allegations of the instrumentalization of antisemitism to silence criticism towards Israel, seems to highlight the conceptual ambiguity surrounding the phenomenon itself.

The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, The Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and The Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism and Racism at Tel Aviv University will provide a platform for scholars from various disciplines to analyze current events within broader historical, sociological, cultural, and political contexts. We will award scholars a $3,000 research grant to support their ongoing research on antisemitism in the aftermath of October 7th.

We invite PhD candidates, postdoctoral fellows, and early career scholars to submit a CV and research proposal of up to two pages to [email protected], by January 15, 2025.

Accepted applicants will be expected to participate and present their research at an international conference on the same topic, to be held in Jerusalem in the summer of 2025.

בתי ספר תיכוניים שפעלו ברחבי תחום המושב היו עבור צעירים וצעירות יהודים רבים נקודת המפגש הראשונה - והמכוננת - עם האימפריה הרוסית. תוצאות המפגש הזה היו מפתיעות: בניגוד לציפיות הממסד, לא הפכו בוגרי בתי הספר לנתינים נאמנים של הצאר; בניגוד לחששות הציונים, רובם לא הפכו למתבוללים-קרייריסטים; ובניגוד למתואר לא אחת במחקר, רובם לא פנו לפעילות מהפכנית. כיצד בכל זאת השפיעו בתי הספר? מדוע הייתה השפעתם חשובה? "הגימנזיסטים" מברר שאלות אלה, ומציע מתוך כך מבט חדש על תולדותיהם של היהודים דוברי הרוסית בואך המאה העשרים.

״להיות יהודי בגרמניה הנאצית״ מראה כיצד השינויים המואצים שעברו בתוך שנים אחדות היהודים הגרמנים, בני קהילה שנודעה במובהק באורח החיים הבורגני שלה עד לתקופה זו, נוגעים לסוגיות ליבה של הקיום האנושי באשר הוא. בתוך כך הספר מציע דיון חדשני על עצם האפשרות העומדת לפני בניה ובנותיה של חברה הנתונה תחת דיכוי לנקוט, למרות הכול, יוזמה פעילה בעיצוב חוויות היומיום שלה.
