A remarkable achievement for Tel Aviv University: Prof. Judith Berman of the Shmunis School of Biomedicine and Cancer Research has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS), one of the highest honors in the scientific world.

Prof. Berman is a leading researcher in microbiology and genetics, whose work explores how genetic changes enable drug resistance in Candida albicans, a fungal pathogen responsible for serious infections in humans.

She becomes the sixth Tel Aviv University researcher to be elected to the Academy over the past 50 years, joining a distinguished community of scientists whose work has shaped the future of research worldwide.

Congratulations to Prof. Berman on this well-deserved recognition!

Why aren’t you losing weight even though you’re exercising?

A new Tel Aviv University-led study by Dr. Tzachi Knaan and Prof. Yftach Gepner may have the answer: your body adapts to exercise by burning less energy elsewhere.

Researchers found that while participants became fitter, reduced fat, and gained muscle mass, they did not lose significant weight. Instead, the body compensated by lowering resting metabolism and becoming more efficient in everyday movement.

The findings offer a new explanation for one of fitness’s biggest frustrations. Exercise remains essential for health, but significant weight loss often requires more than physical activity alone. According to the researchers, the most effective approach combines exercise, proper nutrition, and a deeper understanding of how the body responds to change.

Thousands of prospective students joined us on campus for Tel Aviv University’s Open Day last Friday!

They came to explore degree programs, meet faculty members and students, discover new opportunities, and take their first step toward the future they want to build.

From packed lecture halls and campus tours to conversations about research, innovation, and student life, it was inspiring to see so many curious minds asking questions and thinking big about what comes next.

This year’s Open Day also featured a dedicated center for reservists, career service members, and displaced residents, where visitors could learn about special admissions pathways, academic accommodations, and support programs designed to help them succeed.

A special thank you to everyone who joined us, and to the faculty, staff, and students who helped make the day such a success.

Read the full recap and discover the highlights from the day in the article below.

Campus Sustainability Day at Tel Aviv University!

Part of the Green Campus initiative, TAU's Sustainability Center ran activities aimed to create eco-friendly practices on campus and raise environmental awareness among students, faculty and staff.

The Day was packed with activities and workshops, such as: dog adoption (!) and nutrition advise for furry friends; a bike tune-up station and secondhand bike gear giveaway; sustainable fashion booths, eco-social products and much more.

At TAU sustainability is socially responsible, but also just so much fun!

The universe is full of galaxies we’ve never seen before, and sometimes, it takes one determined student to help uncover them.

At Tel Aviv University, physics master’s student Daniel Pakula developed an automated system using the telescope to detect faint dwarf galaxies that have gone unnoticed in previous surveys.

By combining astrophysics, technology, and curiosity, Daniel is helping scientists map hidden structures of the universe and deepen our understanding of dark matter, galaxy formation, and the cosmos itself.

“Science tries to predict what things actually look like in reality, and that fascinated me.”

Turns out, the universe is full of undiscovered mysteries —and Daniel is helping us uncover them.

Open Space of Memory: Memorial Stickers Archive

Tel Aviv University and the Gray Foundation are proud to announce "Engraved Voices – An Open Space of Memory" by architect Lihi Ein Gedi Davidovitz, as the winning design for a campus memorial honoring those who fell in the October 7 attack and the wars that followed.

At the center of the memorial will be a steel wall engraved with phrases inspired by memorial stickers, a civic initiative that emerged across Israel after October 7th as a spontaneous, personal, and deeply powerful form of remembrance. These messages, created in memory of the killed civilians and soldiers, carry voices of grief, resilience, hope, and life.

Alongside the physical memorial, Tel Aviv University has launched a digital archive dedicated to preserving these memorial stickers and the stories behind them for future generations.

We invite families, communities, and the public to explore the archive, upload photographs of stickers, and share information about the people, artists, and messages they commemorate.

Can you make milk without cows?

Remilk says you can, and you should! Founders ‪Aviv Wolff‬‏ and Ori Cohavi created a milk nearly identical to cow's milk, using real milk proteins -- but at a fraction of the environmental and industrial cost. Their cow-free milk is on shelves in Israel now, and will soon be available around the world.

Remilk began at Tel Aviv University's Entrepreneurship Center, in its startup accelerator program JumpTAU. Wolff and Cohavi were part of the first cohort of this program which builds solidarity between Arab and Jewish Israelis through building startups together.

The milk (and many more dairy products in development) also presents a sustainable food solution to the challenges of climate, food insecurity, and geopolitical situations that affect international trade.

Wolff: “We are not trying to become another alternative milk. Instead, we are reimagining the dairy industry in a kinder, more responsible way.”

Researchers from Tel Aviv University have developed a new treatment that significantly reduced nerve cell damage after spinal cord injury, and helped injured animals recover up to 80% of their motor function.

The treatment works by removing excess glutamate, a neurochemical that rapidly accumulates after injury and triggers further damage to the nervous system. Unlike existing approaches, the therapy can be administered through a simple intravenous injection within hours after trauma, a critical window for preventing long-term disability.

The breakthrough, led by Dr. Angela Ruban from TAU’s Stanley Steyer School of Health Professions and other researchers from Gray Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences and Sagol School of Neuroscience, may also open new possibilities for treating traumatic brain injuries and stroke.

Remembering the keeper of memories.

Today, Tel Aviv University commemorated 10 years since the passing of Elie Wiesel, one of the most influential Jewish voices of the 20th century, together with the Koret Center for Jewish Civilization, the Cymbalista Synagogue and Jewish Heritage Center, and ANU – Museum of the Jewish People.

The event also marked 60 years since the publication of Wiesel’s landmark book, "The Jews of Silence" about the fate of Soviet Jewry, and brought together leading Holocaust scholars, Israel Prize laureates, and those who knew Wiesel personally to reflect on his life, work, and enduring moral legacy.

“Do not remain silent and do not sink into blind indifference,” Wiesel urged the world in his Nobel Peace Prize speech, words that continue to resonate today.

Among the speakers was Israeli historian Dr. Yoel Rappel, personally chosen by Wiesel to edit his Hebrew works and oversee his archive, who reflected on Wiesel’s lifelong call to stand up for Jewish life, memory, and human dignity.
