We are delighted to share that Dr. Subhadip Roy, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry & Associate Dean (Publications), The ICFAI University Tripura, has co-authored a research article in CrystEngComm (Royal Society of Chemistry):

“Differential lability and Zn-specific structural transformation in water-coordinated Ni(II)/Zn(II) dimethylviolurate complexes: implications for antioxidant and antibacterial activity”

The study reports two isostructural Ni(II) and Zn(II) complexes of 1,3-dimethylvioluric acid, fully characterized by spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The Zn(II) complex was obtained via a solvent-mediated transformation of a previously reported pyridine adduct, in which coordinated pyridine is replaced by water while the crystal framework remains intact- an elegant example of coordination rearrangement without loss of crystallinity.

Biological evaluation revealed that the Zn(II) complex exhibits stronger antioxidant activity (DPPH assay and cyclic voltammetry), attributed to the greater kinetic lability of its coordinated water and a proposed hydrogen-atom-transfer mechanism. The Ni(II) complex showed selective antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus over Escherichia coli, with SEM imaging confirming membrane damage and pointing to a multimodal mode of action.

These findings highlight how subtle differences at the metal centre can produce distinctly different physicochemical and biological outcomes in violurate-based coordination chemistry.

Published in CrystEngComm (Impact Factor: 2.4, SCIE/Scopus Q2).

Congratulations to Dr. Subhadip Roy and all co-authors on this valuable contribution.
