2nd Valedictory Function of the Biotech Club and Launch of e-Magazine “Biotech Prizma”

The Department of Biotechnology, St. John’s College, Agra, marked a memorable occasion with the 2nd Valedictory Function of the Biotech Club and the grand launch of the e-magazine “Biotech Prizma” on Friday, May 9, 2025. The event, held in the Multipurpose Hall, served as a vibrant celebration of academic accomplishments, student creativity, and scientific innovation.
The ceremony commenced with a divine prayer led by Rev (Dr) B. S. Singh, Former Chaplain and Head of Botany Department, followed by a devotional Vandana song performed by students of B.Sc. I and II, setting a serene and respectful tone for the day.
Building on the spiritual beginning, Prof. Samuel G. Singh, Coordinator of the Department, extended a warm welcome address, highlighting the club’s journey, its growing impact, and the commitment of the department to nurturing young scientific minds.This was followed by an enlightening presentation on laboratory equipment delivered by Dr. Shipra Shukla, Convenor of the Biotech Club, which reflected the department’s dedication to providing students with cutting-edge resources and practical exposure.
Continuing the academic overview, Astha, Secretary of the Biotech Club, presented the Annual Report, offering a detailed account of the year’s activities—including academic events, industrial visits, skill-building workshops, competitions, and cultural engagements—demonstrating the holistic development of the students. To celebrate the creative and intellectual spirit of the students, a melodious group song was presented by the students of B.Sc. I and II.
A significant highlight of the day was the formal unveiling of the e-magazine “Biotech Prizma”, a digital publication showcasing scientific articles, creative writing, research highlights, and departmental achievements. The launch was graced by all dignitaries, who collectively released the magazine to resounding applause.
The e-magazine stands as a milestone in student-led academic publishing, reflecting the innovative spirit and collaborative efforts of both students and faculty of the Biotechnology Department.
The programme then moved into the first phase of certificate distribution & award presented by Chief Guest Mr. Sachin Rajpal, Principal Director, MSME, assisted by Dr. Shalini Saxena.
Following the distribution, Mr. Rajpal addressed the gathering, commending the department’s focus on research and innovation and encouraging students to explore biotechnology’s potential in entrepreneurship and public service.
Mr. Rajpal was then felicitated by Prof. S. P. Singh, Chief Patron and Principal, in recognition of his gracious presence and inspiring words, which served as a significant highlight of the event.
Following this, the ceremony proceeded to the second phase of certificate distribution, conducted by Prof. S. P. Singh, assisted by Dr. Isha Goyal. In his address, Prof. Singh emphasized the department’s legacy of excellence and its role in preparing students for impactful scientific careers.
As a gesture of appreciation, Prof. Singh was felicitated by Prof. Samuel G. Singh, marking a moment of mutual respect and shared leadership. The attendees were then guided through a visit to the Biotechnology Laboratory, where they witnessed the department’s ongoing research and infrastructure.
Rejoining the cultural celebration, students presented a series of lively performances, blending talent with enthusiasm. This was followed by certificate distribution of Phases III) by Guest of Honour Rev (Dr) B. S. Singh, assisted by Dr. Isha Goyal. In his address, Dr. Singh reflected on the evolution of the department and its unwavering academic strength. He was then felicitated by Dr. Shalini Saxena, in acknowledgment of his valuable contributions.
Adding to the cultural richness, a graceful solo song was performed by Avantika Kulshreshtha (B.Sc.-I), which captivated the audience. This led into Phase IV of certificate distribution, conducted by Dr. B. Geetha Singh, Former Head, assisted by Dr. Divya Sharma. In her address, Dr. Singh inspired students to pursue knowledge with curiosity and passion. She was subsequently felicitated by Dr. Shukla.
Uplifting the atmosphere further, Divyansh Sharma (B.Sc.-II) performed a soulful musical piece. Thereafter, Phase V of certificate distribution was carried out by Prof. Namita Srivastava, Dean, Faculty of Science, assisted by Dr. Shalini Saxena. Prof. Srivastava’s address lauded the department’s interdisciplinary approach and consistent pursuit of academic excellence. She was felicitated by Dr. Isha Goyal for her gracious participation.
Bringing the recognition sequence to a close, Phase VI of certificate distribution was conducted by Prof. Samuel G. Singh, assisted by Dr. Shipra Shukla, acknowledging the outstanding efforts of more students.
To conclude the function, Dr. Divya Sharma delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing sincere gratitude to all dignitaries, faculty members, organizers, and students whose collective efforts made the event a grand success.
The programme drew to a dignified close with the National Anthem, led by the students of B.Sc. I and II, leaving the audience inspired and proud to be part of the department’s growing legacy.
Following the formal proceedings, a fellowship lunch was organized, offering a warm and relaxed setting for dignitaries, faculty members, and students to interact, reflect, and celebrate the collective achievements of the day.

Report on Career Counselling Session: "A Journey with Biosciences"
A career counselling session titled "A Journey with Biosciences" was conducted on March 8, 2025, in the Multipurpose Hall, at St. John's College, Agra. The talk was delivered by Mr. Varun Alexander Lall, an esteemed expert in the field of education in overseas, who provided valuable insights into pursuing higher education in biosciences abroad.
The event commenced with a warm welcome by Ms. Sharon D'Silva, Vice-President of the Biotech Club. Following this, Prof. S. G. Singh, Coordinator, Department of Biotechnology, formally introduced the guest speaker, highlighting his expertise in guiding students toward global academic opportunities.
Mr. Lall’s session focused on higher education prospects in biosciences at renowned universities in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and Europe. He detailed various specialized programs in biotechnology, microbiology, environmental sciences, bioinformatics, and biomedical research, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary learning and adapting to the evolving global landscape of biosciences.
He also provided in-depth information on admission procedures, eligibility criteria, standardized tests (such as GRE, TOEFL, and IELTS), and scholarship opportunities available for students aspiring to study abroad. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of internships, research assistantships, and industry collaborations in enhancing career prospects for international students.
Through real-world examples and case studies, Mr. Lall encouraged students to explore international research collaborations, funding opportunities, and post-study work options. He stressed the importance of selecting universities based on faculty expertise, research facilities, and career advancement potential.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, where students sought guidance on choosing the right country and university, financial planning, visa applications, and career pathways after completing their studies abroad.

Report on Participation in IISEHC National Scientific Conference at Banasthali Vidyapith
Two students from the Department of Biotechnology, St.John's College, Agra Ms. Khushi Saxena and Ms. Sapna, B.Sc. llnd Year, had the privilege of participating in the IISEHC National Scientific Conference held at Banasthali Vidyapith, Newai (Tonk), Rajasthan on March 27–28, 2025. Their involvement in this prestigious national-level conference provided them with valuable early exposure to the field of scientific research and academia.
The opportunity to participate emerged from a discussion with their mentor, Dr. Divya Sharma, faculty member of the Department of Biotechnology, who encouraged them to present their academic work at the national forum. After reviewing the available categories, the students opted for the poster presentation segment. They completed their registration by submitting abstracts derived from review articles developed during a prior training-cum-internship program.
Under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Sharma, the students prepared and presented the following posters:
• “Growing Threats of Antimicrobial Resistance and Strategies for Their Mitigation”
• “Microbial Biofilms: Composition, Formation, Applications, and Therapeutic Strategies”
These poster presentations provided the students with an excellent platform to engage with contemporary scientific topics, interact with fellow researchers, and effectively communicate their understanding to a diverse scientific audience.
Upon their return, on April 2, 2025, Prof. Samuel G. Singh, Coordinator, Department of Biotechnology, felicitated and appreciated the students for their initiative and for representing the institution at such a renowned scientific platform. During the felicitation ceremony, Ms. Khushi Saxena and Ms. Sapna shared their enriching experiences with fellow students, highlighting how the conference boosted their confidence, offered insights into real-world research environments, and broadened their academic horizons — further igniting their passion for scientific inquiry.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of esteemed faculty members — Dr. Shalini Saxena, Dr. Isha Goyal, and Dr. Divya Sharma — whose mentorship and encouragement were instrumental in the students’ successful participation.

Report on Rovers and Rangers Achievement at State Samagam – 2nd Position in Uttar Pradesh
St. John’s College, Agra, proudly participated in the three-day State Samagam, held from March 26 to 28, 2025, organized by the Rovers and Rangers of Uttar Pradesh at Prof. Rajendra Prasad (Rajju Bhaiya) University, Prayagraj. Demonstrating exceptional enthusiasm, discipline, and teamwork, the Rovers and Rangers team of the college secured the prestigious Runners-Up position at this esteemed state-level event.
Representing the Department of Biotechnology, the following five dedicated students participated:
• Kush Bhardwaj, Pravesh Pratap Singh, and Kumari Palak (1st Year)
• Alfia Main and Ridhima Singh (2nd Year)
The camp provided a vibrant and competitive environment, allowing participants to test their physical endurance, mental agility, creativity, and leadership skills. The students gained invaluable exposure and developed a deeper understanding of collaboration and resilience.

The Department of Biotechnology successfully organized an interactive session on "Framing a Career in Biotechnology" on February 24, 2025. The event was graced by the presence of distinguished B.Sc. Biotechnology and M.Sc. Botany students, who eagerly explored career opportunities in Biotechnology.
The program commenced with a felicitation ceremony led by Dr. Shalini Saxena, who warmly welcomed the guest speaker, Dr. Nitin Wahi, Project Scientist at Pathfinder Research & Training Foundation, Greater Noida, along with all participants. Prof. Samuel G. Singh inaugurated the session by presenting a sapling to Dr. Nitin Wahi, symbolizing growth and the pursuit of knowledge. Following this, Dr. Shipra Shukla introduced Dr. Nitin Wahi, highlighting his inspiring journey, achievements, and contributions to the field of Biotechnology. A highly successful one-day workshop on ‘How to Prepare an Effective Resume’ was held on February 20, 2025, at the Multipurpose Hall, St. John’s College, Agra. The workshop, a collaborative effort of the Training and Placement Cell and the Department of Biotechnology, was meticulously designed to impart crucial resume-writing skills to students, equipping them with the necessary tools to structure, format, and optimize their resumes for maximum employability.
The event commenced with a gracious welcome address by Dr. Shalini Saxena, followed by an enlightening introductory note by Prof. Samuel Gorden Singh, the Coordinator of the Department of Biotechnology. The occasion was graced by the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Prof. S.P. Singh, Principal of St. John’s College, Agra, and Prof. Raju V. John, Coordinator of the Training and Placement Cell. In line with the college's commitment to sustainability, a green welcome ceremony was held, where the dignitaries were honored with saplings as a gesture of appreciation for their support.

Mid-Term Examination
The Department of Biotechnology successfully conducted the Mid-term Assessment for B.Sc. Part I and II students from February 10, 2025 to February 22, 2025. This assessment was meticulously designed to evaluate students' understanding of core subjects, including Biotechnology, Botany, and Chemistry, while also serving as a platform for academic self-assessment. By engaging in this structured evaluation, students gained valuable feedback on their progress, enabling them to identify strengths and areas for improvement.

Beyond academic assessment, the mid-term examination played a crucial role in fostering time management, analytical reasoning, and critical thinking skills, essential for their overall academic and professional development. The well-planned ex*****on of the examination ensured a seamless process, maintaining a conducive environment for fair and transparent evaluation.

The successful organization of the assessment was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Dr. Shalini Saxena, Dr. Shipra Shukla, Dr. Isha Goyal, Dr. Divya Sharma, along with non-teaching staff Mr. Yogesh Kumar, and Mr. Aman Indolia.
