Urban Management Foundation Studio

As part of Semester 1 of the Master’s in Urban Management programme at the Faculty of Management, the Urban Management Foundation Studio introduces students to the reading of Indian cities through the lenses of economy, sustainability, liveability, and services & infrastructure.

Led by Prof. Vishal Dubey, the studio integrates perspectives on urban management, governance, infrastructure, socio-economic conditions, and neighbourhood-level service provision. Students were divided into two groups to study Vastrapur and Usmanpura in Ahmedabad. Through field visits and reconnaissance surveys, students explored their respective neighbourhoods through micro-mapping of basic services and amenities. The study further examines the management of service provision and access through user–supplier perspectives, across different sub-areas and pockets within the neighbourhoods.

Following the mid-term review, the study will extend towards the development of measurable indicators and comparative diagnostics, leading to service benchmarking and an assessment of neighbourhood performance across key sectoral components.

The mid-term review brings together the Vastrapur and Usmanpura cohorts to present their findings across key thematic areas emerging from their respective neighbourhood studies.

A contract is rarely just a document. In urban development, it brings together multiple stakeholders, interests, and obligations, shaping how projects are structured, delivered, and managed when things do not go as planned.

Through the Contracts & Law course, students of the Master’s in Urban Management and Real Estate explore these decisions as future professionals, while developing a way of thinking that supports better decision-making beyond contract management.

Led by Prof. Suren Vakil, Vice-Chairperson, CEPT Research and Development Foundation, and Prof. Reshma Shah, Project Director, CEPT Research and Development Foundation, the course brings practical perspectives on contracts and legal decision-making in urban development. Drawing on their experience across engineering consultancy and infrastructure projects, the faculty connects legal and commercial considerations with the realities of urban development.

What does it take to manage and develop a real estate project beyond the physical development itself?

As part of Studio Module 02: Firm Analytics in the Master’s in Real Estate programme, students are exploring this through a live real estate case in Ahmedabad. Taught by Mr Chirag Akruwala, Architect and Founder, TriAXION Innovations and Operations, the studio introduces students to the different aspects of analysing and managing a real estate firm.

Students of the Master’s in Real Estate at the Faculty of Management presented their work at the Mid-Term Jury for Studio Module 2: Firm Analytics.

Taught by Mr. Chirag Akruwala, Architect and Founder, TriAXION Innovations and Operations, the module is based on a live real estate case in Ahmedabad, with students working in nine teams to develop their proposals.

The jury featured Amit Chamaria, Chief Financial Officer; Dharmesh Vyas, Chief Operating Officer; and Rahul Jhawar, Chief Human Resources Officer, Arvind SmartSpaces. They appreciated the depth of the students’ analysis and the way they approached their proposals, while also sharing feedback from their industry experience.

The discussions gave students a chance to reflect on their analysis, explain the decisions behind their proposals, and strengthen their approach to decision-making in the context of real estate.

What happens when policy moves to ground for implementation?

As part of the Public Policy elective, led by Dr. Mercy S. Samuel, students explored the implementation and management approach of CITIIS 2.0 through a guest lecture by Mr. Sourabh Manuja, Programme Coordinator and Team Lead.

The session offered a closer look at how policy translates into decisions, coordination, fund management and action on the ground.

Early this month, students of the Master’s in Urban Management programme at the Faculty of Management visited the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Government of Gujarat, in Gandhinagar.

The visit offered students a closer look at how economic and statistical data is collected, analysed, and made available for urban and policy planning. Through an interactive briefing, they explored the Directorate’s surveys, methodologies, techniques, and the level of data granularity available. The session was followed by a Q&A with officers, where students engaged with practitioners and explored how data informs planning and policy decisions.

The visit provided students with a deeper understanding of the systems and processes that shape the data behind informed urban decision-making. 📊

Studio Module 2: Firm Analytics, part of the Semester 1 curriculum of the Master’s in Real Estate programme at the Faculty of Management, introduced students to the business side of real estate development through a live case in Ahmedabad.

Taught by Mr. Chirag Akruwala, Architect and Founder of TriAXION Innovations and Operations, the module brought together perspectives from consulting, design, and real estate development. Across nine teams, students applied different aspects of firm analytics, including pricing, sales strategy, project duration, cash flows, technology, and overall business planning, to develop and evaluate their proposals. The exercise helped students strengthen their analytical and decision-making skills, building a foundation for professional practice and leadership in the real estate sector.

The Mid-Term will bring together the nine teams and an industry jury, where students will present their proposed solutions and receive feedback on their analysis, approach, and decision-making.
