DRM Ahmedabad Visits NID; Reviews Student-Led Railway Design Innovations

Ahmedabad, 30 April 2026: The National Institute of Design (NID) welcomed the Divisional Railway Manager (Ahmedabad), Shri Ved Prakash, for a comprehensive review of ongoing design-led innovations under the Railway Design Centre (RDC), a collaborative initiative between the Railway Board and NID. Established to integrate design thinking into railway systems, the RDC has been extended until 2035 to support future-ready, user-centric solutions.
The visit commenced with an introduction by Dr. Tridha Gajjar, Activity Chairperson (R&D), and Mr. Namit Sharma, RDC Head. The session highlighted NID’s legacy, its multidisciplinary approach, and its contributions to addressing complex mobility challenges. Students presented a diverse range of projects aimed at enhancing efficiency, usability, and passenger experience within the Indian Railways ecosystem.

Among the highlights was a system-level exploration of a Railway Cargo Plus Coach Design by Product Design students Aniruddha Deshpande, Monish Bafna, Dhruv Mathur, and Vikrant Verma, guided by Dr. Gayatri Menon, proposing new possibilities for integrating cargo and passenger needs.

From Transportation & Automobile Design (TAD), Ojas Shirpurkar, Aniket Bhardwaj, Himanshu Aate, and Anudev Praveen, guided by Namit Sharma and Pratheek P. Ashok, presented an ergonomic Porter Cart designed to streamline parcel movement across platforms, parcel vans, and coaches. The proposal focuses on improved manoeuvrability, reduced physical strain, and faster turnaround times, directly addressing congestion during peak operations. Building on future mobility scenarios, Aniket Bhardwaj also introduced a Future-Ready Executive Pod System for high-speed trains, while Ojas Shirpurkar presented research-driven strategies to reimagine railway coaches with enhanced circulation, accessibility, and passenger comfort both guided by Namit Sharma.

In Lifestyle Accessories Design (LAD), Neeraj Kirar, guided by Namit Sharma, proposed an Integrated Food Distribution and Collection Trolley aimed at improving onboard service efficiency in next-generation train coaches.

The DRM appreciated the depth of research and practical relevance of the projects. The porter cart concepts, in particular, received strong interest, along with recommendations for field evaluation. A prototype is scheduled for testing at Ahmedabad Junction railway station to assess its performance under real-world conditions.
The visit concluded with an interaction at the Director’s Boardroom involving NID leadership, faculty, and the DRM’s team. Dr. Ashok Mandal, Director, NID, reiterated the institute’s commitment to supporting future railway initiatives through the RDC, highlighting its strong multidisciplinary capabilities. Mr. Jitendra Singh Rajput, Dean, NID, also emphasized enhancing the passenger journey through the integration of AI and IoT in future projects.

The DRM shared insights into upcoming opportunities where design collaboration could further strengthen a future-ready railway ecosystem. The visit reinforced the shared vision of NID and the Railway Board to advance user-centric, innovative, and sustainable design solutions for Indian Railways.

The Work in Ease workshop was an interactive mindfulness intervention conducted at the National Institute of Design (NID) by Furniture Design students Krushna Oza, Devika Vinod, and Shrestha Jain. Developed as a core project within the System Design course under the guidance of faculty mentor Neha Mandlik, the workshop was specifically tailored for office employees navigating the challenges of long-duration desk jobs.

Central to the intervention was the application of the Alexander Technique, a somatic method used to identify and release harmful habits of tension that often go unnoticed during high-focus work. The session moved beyond static ergonomic checklists, teaching participants how to efficiently engage their body and mind as a unified system. By relearning the body's natural capacity for self-support, employees explored how to refrain from unnecessary physical tension and mental fatigue. This holistic approach demonstrated that by refining their primary tool—the body—professionals can maintain a more fruitful, energized, and sustainable workflow throughout the day.
