Center for Water and Sanitation Center for Water and Sanitation University carries out action-research, training, advocacy to enable governments improve delivery of WatSan services

Since 2009, PAS has supported development of tools, methods and processes for performance assessment and improvement in delivery of urban water and sanitation services. It works with all levels of government: national, state and local. The PAS online performance assessment system has been implemented in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra covering more than 400 cities. Other states in India have also begun to implement this system. The PAS programme has developed performance improvement tools to assist urban local governments in planning, target setting and tariff determination.

We are delighted to share that Center for Water and Sanitation (CWAS), CRDF, CEPT University has received two awards for poster presentations at the 9th International Water Week 2026.

The awards were presented by Shri C.R. Patil, Union Minister of Ministry of Jal Shakti during the closing ceremony at Bharat Mandapam, making this a special moment of recognition for us.

🏆 First Prize – “Integrating Climate Resilience in Urban WASH: A Water–Waste–Energy Nexus Approach from Small and Medium Towns in Maharashtra”

🏆 Second Prize – “Geohydrological Study for Sustainable Groundwater Management in Anjar and Gandhidham”

Beyond the awards, the conference provided a valuable platform for the CWAS team to showcase our work and share experiences on climate-resilient and sustainable urban water management. CWAS also hosted an exhibition stall, which received an encouraging response and provided an opportunity to engage with practitioners, researchers and stakeholders from across the water sector.

The event was a great opportunity for the team to share our work and connect with others working in the water sector 🎉✨

A series of awareness workshops on waste segregation, solid waste management and composting was organised by Becharaji Nagarpalika, in collaboration with the Center for Water and Sanitation (CWAS), CRDF, CEPT University, at Bahuchar Vidhya Mandir School.

The awareness campaign featured an interactive game that provided students with an engaging learning experience to understand and practice four-category waste segregation at source, in line with the SWM Rules 2026. Around 40 students actively participated in identifying and categorising different types of waste at this campaign. The interactive activity encouraged students to adopt responsible waste management practices in their daily lives.

🌏 Nepal's devastating floods have once again put climate justice at the centre of the global climate conversation.

🌊 Following the recent flash floods in Nepal, the discussion around climate justice has gained renewed attention. This raises a fundamental question: Who bears the costs and risks associated with climate change and how can this be shared equally?

🌍 Climate change is not only an environmental challenge. It is also an issue of equity, responsibility and finance. Countries and communities that have contributed the least to global emissions are often among those facing the greatest impacts, while having fewer resources to adapt and recover. ⚖️

📖 Our paper, Moving Towards Climate Justice – What is Needed?, explores what a more equitable climate response could look like, including the need for stronger climate finance, greater accountability and approaches that recognise the differentiated responsibilities and vulnerabilities of countries.

Nepal's experience is a reminder that climate action must go beyond reducing emissions alone. It must also strengthen the ability of vulnerable countries and communities to adapt, recover from climate-related impacts and build long-term resilience.

इचलकरंजी महानगरपालिका (IMC) organised the Lok Kalyan Melawa, a Government Schemes Awareness Workshop for street vendors and Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs), with around 250 participants, including 150+ women SHG members.

As part of the programme, the Center for Water and Sanitation (CWAS), CEPT University, in coordination with the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Urban Livelihoods Mission , conducted an orientation on Water Security, Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) and Groundwater Recharge (GWR). The session highlighted the importance of sustainable water management, groundwater conservation, and rooftop rainwater harvesting to strengthen urban water security and climate resilience.

The session also explored opportunities for community participation in the operation and maintenance of community-level RWH and GWR structures, and identified households interested in adopting rooftop rainwater harvesting systems.

A CWAS information stall further strengthened outreach through IEC materials, demonstrations and interactive discussions on RWH and GWR. Flyers and reusable cloth bags carrying water conservation messages were also distributed to encourage awareness and community action.

The campaign provided a valuable platform to build awareness, identify community interest and foster local ownership of water conservation initiatives, laying the foundation for future engagement and implementation of RWH and GWR interventions in Ichalkaranji.
