Celebration of 75 Years of India’s Independence: Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav

As per the guidelines of Ministry of Education the Department of Commerce, AMU, organized a Seminar on Celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence- ‘Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsava’.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest, Prof Shakeel Samdani (Dean, Faculty of Law AMU, Aligarh) highlighted the significance of March 12 when the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi started the Dandi March. He also congratulated the Central Government for taking up the initiative to start the celebrations of 75th Independence Day. He also highlighted the contribution of Tipu Sultan and his struggle against the British. He highlighted the role of Momin Conference, Jamit Ul Ulama-i-Hind, AMU and other organizations in freedom struggle.

Commemorative webinar held

The Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University organized a National Webinar on ‘India’s Freedom Struggle’ under the initiative ‘Azadi ka Amrut Mahotav’ launched by the Government of India. Addressing the gathering virtually, Chief Speaker, Prof Waseem Raja (Department of History, AMU) said that India’s freedom was a result of decades of struggle by the freedom fighters and activists. The British were able to rule over us because the feeling of nationalism was missing from the minds of Indians. India was only able to get independence only after the spirit of nationalism arose in the minds of the people.

He further stated that India is a diverse society with many languages, religions, etc. He further highlighted the contributions by Mahatma Gandhi in wining India’s independence. He also congratulated, Prof Shakeel Samdani, Dean, Faculty of Law for organizing such a wonderful webinar on such short notice.

Presiding over the webinar, Prof Shakeel Samdani highlighted the significance of March 12 when the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi started the Dandi March. Prof Samdani also highlighted the contributions of Tipu Sultan and his struggle against the British. He further said that all the religions are responsible for gaining India’s independence from the British. He discussed in detail the role of Momin Conference, Jamit Ul Ulama-i-Hind, Aligarh Muslim University and other organizations in freedom struggle.

Mr Mohammad Nasir, Department of Law, welcomed the guests and said it is a good initiative taken by the Faculty of Law to organize a webinar on India’s freedom struggle. He said AMU is an institute of national importance, which also finds a mention in the Indian constitution.

The webinar was moderated by Ayesha Nasir Alawi, Secretary, Law Society while Prof Mohammad Ashraf, Department of Law proposed the vote of thanks.

WEBINAR ON INDIAN CONSTITUTION, IDEA OF INDIA

Articulate experts explained coherently the rights provided to all citizens under Indian constitution and the intellectual foundations of the modern Indian state in the national webinar on 'Indian Constitution and the Idea of India', organised by the Law Society, Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

"The framers of the constitution have provided us with a document that declared our Country a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic, assuring the citizens all the justice, equality and liberty, and making endeavours to promote fraternity," said Prof Mohibul Haque, Department of Political Science.

He was speaking as the Chief Guest of the webinar.

Prof Haque emphasised: "As citizens of India, we are entitled to certain rights as well as obliged to certain duties. It is our duty as responsible citizens that we abide by these laws and carry out our duties. Similarly, knowledge of our fundamental rights is important."

Explaining unity in diversity in the constitution, he pointed out that the Indian Constitution provides us with Articles 29 and 30, ensuring a society without discrimination and mandating minorities with rights to establish and administer educational institutions.

"The Constitution acts as a bridge between the governments and the people," said Prof Nawab Ali Khan, Chairman, Department of Commerce.

After inaugurating the programme, the Guest of Honour, Prof Khan spoke on important provisions in the Constitution. He spoke on Rights to equality, freedom, religion, culture and education among others.

Presiding over the webinar, Prof M Shakeel Ahmed Samdani (Dean, Faculty of Law) discussed the timeline of the Indian constitution and the problems faced by the constituent assembly while drafting it.

He asserted that Babasaheb Dr BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution was a jurist, political thinker par excellence, and a free spirited reformer, who was far ahead of his time.

Mr Mohammad Nasir (Faculty member, Department of Law) delivered the welcome address.

Ayesha Nasir Alawi conducted the webinar; while Kaif Siddiqui, Rajat Sandilya and Mahelaka Abrar introduced the speakers.

The webinar had participants from United Kingdom, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iran, Lebanon and Bangladesh. Lawyers and academicians from all over the country also participated.

Vice Chancellor releases Law Society News Letter

If you are a law researcher or a budding lawyer, who wants robust legal news and editorials related to all aspects of law and legal practice on the desk and in the favourites folder; start leafing through the Law Society News Letter 2020, Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Released recently in a special event by AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor; the letter features rare interviews of legal luminaries like the High Court and Supreme Court lawyers and judges.

“One of the major highlights are articles on Prof Neelakanta Ramakrishna Madhava Menon (Indian Civil Servant, Lawyer and Legal Educator) and Prof Hafizul Rehman (Founder Dean, Faculty of Law),” said Prof M Shakeel Ahmed Samdani, Dean, Faculty of Law.

It is a gazette, providing future lawyers and leaders with the latest legal updates, support, and networking opportunities to assist their career progression, said Abdullah Samdani, former Secretary, Law Society.

“The magazine focuses on the law industry, its events, trends, and the people who drive its success delivering content focused on legal management, client relationships, and more. It also gives an accurate and comprehensive schedule of all Faculty of Law webinars, web talks, lectures, seminars and other events,” he added.

Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof Zaheeruddin also attended the release function. Ilsa Israil (Joint-Editor, Law Society News Letter) was present on the occasion.

AMU Law team wins third place in Moot Court

A team of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) law students comprising Shweta, Tanya Upadhyay and Anushka Chaudhary secured the third place in the online, bracket-style, National Moot Court Competition organised by the Amity Law School, Noida. They have received a trophy, citations and a cash prize of Rs 10, 000.

"The sucess of the students is a testament to their perseverance and can-do attitude in these challenging times, when most academic activities have come to a halt," said Prof M Shakeel Ahmed Samdani, Dean, Faculty of Law.

Online Workshop on Mooting Skills

Prof M Shakeel Ahmed Samdani, Dean, Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) shared tips on how to develop arguments persuasively and coherently and to effectively integrate facts with legal explanations.

He was addressing the students in an online workshop on 'Mooting Skills: Memorial Drafting and Oral Presentation' organised to mark the newly constituted Law Society.

Delineating requisites of mooting skills, Prof Samdani explained how to advocate on behalf of the applicants and respondents and urged the student participants to enhance legal knowledge.

He advised them to attend online workshops and put in the required hard work to hone their competence.

Somya Goyal (Secretary, Moot Court) and Aman Alam (Joint Secretary) explained the essentials for success in moot court competitions.

Ayesha Nasir Alavi (Secretary, Law Society) spoke on the difference between moot court and actual court. Hiba Zaheer (Vice President, Law Society) extended the vote of thanks.

Anubhav Vashihsta, Ekta Varshney, Umaam Siddique and Ayushman Sharma presented arguments in the mock moot court during the virtual workshop.

AMU ranked fourth best Indian University

Aligarh, December 28: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has once again emerged as one of the foremost universities of national importance as it is placed on the fourth rank among Indian universities in the 'US News and World Report' rankings. The ranking has come at a time when the university is observing its centenary year.

AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor congratulated faculty members and students for the achievement for their unrelenting efforts to take the university to the zenith of success.

"The AMU fraternity is overjoyed to see that the university is steadily pushing aside the impediments caused by the Covid19 pandemic over the last several months to emerge as a top notch centre of higher learning," he added.

Prof Mansoor pointed out that AMU will march ahead with the vibrant spirit of enquiry and unflinching resolve for the future of the nation.

AMU has been ranked on the basis of carefully calibrated performance indicators such as global research reputation (12.5%), regional research reputation (12.5%), publications (10%), books (2.5%), conferences (2.5%), normalized citation impact (10%), total citations (7.5%), number of publications that are among the 10% most cited (12.5%), percentage of total publications that are among the 10% most cited (10%), international collaboration- relative to country (5%), international collaboration (5%), number of highly cited papers that are among the top 1% most cited in their respective field (5%) and percentage of total publications that are among the top 1% most highly cited papers (5%).
