Founded in 1955 as the Civil Engineering School by a society named the "Institute of Engineering & Tec
hnology," IERT initially focused on providing specialized education in civil engineering. The founders included notable figures like Late Shanker Saran, a retired judge of the Hon'ble High Court of Allahabad, and Late Vishwamitra, an advocate. This institution was recognized as the first Polytechnic in Asia, reflecting its pioneering status in technical education. In 1962, the Government of Uttar Pradesh took over the institute, renaming it "Allahabad Polytechnic." A managing committee was established to oversee its operations, and it was granted the status of a grant-in-aid institution. The institute's governance structure was formalized, and the Director of Technical Education, U.P., became the ex-officio Secretary of the management committee. A significant milestone in IERT's history came in 1982 when it was renamed the Institute of Engineering and Rural Technology (IERT). This change acknowledged the institute's expanded focus and multifaceted activities. Government also granted IERT academic autonomy, allowing it greater flexibility in designing and implementing its educational programs. In 2001, IERT established its Engineering Degree Division, offering Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) courses. This division operates as a government-aided self-finance institute and is affiliated with Dr. A. J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), previously known as Uttar Pradesh Technical University, Lucknow. IERT now offers B.Tech degrees in seven disciplines: Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Industrial and Production Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The IERT campus spans 26.5 acres, featuring modern facilities such as well-equipped laboratories, a sizable library with a comprehensive collection of books, and computer labs with the latest technology.
