Exploring Structure & Materials

As part of Advanced Building Technology subject in Semester 9, our students dive into hands-on demo models to understand advanced structural systems. From the sculptural curves of _free-form structures_ to the delicate balance of _tensegrity systems_ and the efficiency of _prefabrication_, they test how materials perform beyond lectures.Concepts turn into tangible experiments, shaping architects who design with both creativity and structural clarity.

Student Work Series.

Project: A place of learning | Lower Primary School
Semester: 4 | Work in progress.

The school is conceived as a playful architectural interpretation of Cubism, inspired by the works of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, where fragmented geometric forms come together to create a dynamic and engaging learning environment.

Set within a contoured landscape,The terrain is shaped through cut-and-fill techniques, resulting in layered levels that define spatial zones. The built masses are broken into smaller cuboidal volumes, arranged in a clustered composition that responds to the natural contours.

Semi-open spaces such as the central amphitheatre act as gathering and performance zones, while smaller play huts are distributed across the site to create intimate, scaled spaces for informal interaction. These elements blur the boundaries between built and open spaces, reinforcing a continuous flow between learning, play, and nature.

Student Work Series.

Semester: 4 | Work in progress.
Project: A place of learning: Lower primary school

The studio project is a place of learning - a school. The students place the school as a response to the ethos of its time-place-people and catering age groups of 4 to 9.
The design is inspired by the idea of nature as a space for exploration and discovery. Instead of a rigid, closed structure, the built forms are broken into smaller blocks and placed across a flowing landscape. This creates a sense of movement, curiosity, and interaction with the natural terrain.

The layout encourages users to explore the space gradually, experiencing different levels, views, and connections. The built environment blends with the contours of the land, allowing nature to guide circulation, learning, and gathering.

The project becomes not just a building, but a journey through nature.

Semester: 4
Project : A place of learning | Lower primary school

The studio project is a place of learning - a school. The students place the school as a response to the ethos of its time-place-people and catering age groups of 4 to 9.

Set within a contoured landscape, the design responds to level differences through cut and fill, shaping a dynamic spatial experience.

Classrooms and playgrounds are connected through underground tunnels, turning movement into play. High contours are used for sliding pathways, creating interactive transitions.

Semi-open spaces like an amphitheatre and small play huts provide both active and calm environments, also functioning as informal gathering areas.
